The gold's head shot up. She had been dozing, her long body curled around the golden egg she had laid. Her eggs were hard. She turned her wedge-shaped head and began to hum deep in her throat. An egg had begun to rock, the inhabitant trying to break free of the hard shell.
They hatch. Hurry!
She imperiously summoned the Candidates, her voice echoing through the minds of all the weyrfolk and dragons. The drudges leaped from their stations and fled to prepare meat for the new hatchlings. The cooks erupted into a flurry of activity, each trying to outdo the other in their culinary masterpieces in honor of the hatching. Messengers hurriedly mounted their dragons to bring the various guests to the Weyr. Today was a special day. The Weyr's young Queen's first clutch was hatching, bringing hope and joy to the Weyr.
Christae raced from her weyr to join her Queen on the sands. "They are hatching!" She cried jubiliantly. She rushed to her dragon and stood next to her, beaming proudly. She hoped that the candidates would arrive soon, already fractures had appeared in one of the larger eggs. Others had begun to rock.
Dragons began to file in, some dropping off passengers in the stands before flying off to the tiers that surrounded the Hatching grounds. Circles or whirling jewel-faceted eyes lit up the grounds. A deep humming could be felt in the very soles of their feet as the dragons encouraged and welcomed the new hatchlings into their world. Birinj appeared over Christae's head, humming so deeply that his little body vibrated with the force. He landed on Christae's shoulder. The Weyrwoman reached up and scratched his eye ridges.

((FROM NIKE....she asked me to post this for her in case she couldn't be here for the start))
Sh'iron was out taking a walk around the Weyr Bowl when he saw his dragon leap of his ledge and glide towards the Hatching Grounds, humming. The Weyrleader grinned, and cursed at the same time as he ran into the Queen's Weyr, put on his cloths that he had put out for the Hatching then ran down to the Grounds.
The Weyrleader grinned to see Christae, Myranenth and Kaith all around the pile of rocking eggs. He strode up to his Weyrmate, and took her into his arms. "This will be great." He said to her ears only then kissed her fondly on her lips.
His bronze was slowly increasing the pitch of his humming. It kept getting louder and louder as the eggs rocked after and faster. Memories came back of his own Hatching came back to him as he watch the eggs. THis would be wonderful!
----------------------------
NIke was busy in the infirmary when she heard the hum. The healer grinned as she grabed her kit. The two other Healers grabed a streacher for the mauled Candidates. "Come on! We want to get there when the first egg starts to hatch." The Master Healer led the two Journeymen to the Hatching Grounds.
There the three stood in the entrance, watching as the stands filled up, and as the eggs rocked faster and faster. This was so exciting! Nike was grinning, memories of her own hatching and Impression came back. Her eyes were darting between the queen egg, the blue egg, and the little gray egg. Wondering which one would Impress who.

As soon as he heard Kaith's voice, Tayrin RAN to the chest at the end of his bed, where the white Candidate's robe was stashed. He shoved it over his head, mussing up further his already unruly hair. He ignored it and ordered his firelizard, Micra, to stay, with the most commanding and firm feelings he knew how to muster. He then dashed off to the Sands, the humming reverberating in his very bones.
When he reached the Sands, he saw that he was one of the first Candidates there. He noticed the one already cracked egg and his stomach knotted. He bowed to Kaith and Christae, then placed himself a respectable distance from the clutch. His heart beat faster than it ever had, even faster than that time when he'd raced his brother across three miles to get his runner. A nervous buzz settled itself in his stomach. The Hatching was here! And he was a Candidate!

The fifteen turn old Miya shot up from her bed as Kaiths voice entered her head. She jumped off of her bed and whirled a white candidate's robe over her athletic build. She slipped the required candidate's sandles on her feet and ran out. She climbed onto a dragon's back and waited impateiently as the dragon flew her to the sands. She jumped off of the back without so much as a word. She ran towards the eggs. Her black hair whipped around as she ran, then settled as she stood on the females' side of the sands. She didn't even bow to the queen since her normal attitude didn't change with the exitement of the hatching. Her feet were unbothered as the hot sands penetrated her sandles. She almost laughed as she saw others doing the dance. Her dark brown, almost black, eyes looked at the rocking eggs with eagerness. Today was the day she would impress. Miya didn't even think that their was a posibilty that she wouldn't.

Kazrael had, some how, found his way to the Hatching Sands after all of the Candidates were alerted that, at last, the clutch was hatching. His white robe was rather wrinkled compared to everyone elses, and rather than sure, confident steps as he moved towards what could be his future, he stumbled; occasionally tripping, and a sort of hopeful fear reflected in his gaze. Dominantly, the only reason that he hadn't lost himself again was that he had followed the mass of his peers heading quickly towards the sands. Being Kaz, of course, he hadnt managed to get there without incident, but close enough. Miraculously.
So now, he stood on the edge of the sands, watching the cluster of softly gleaming eggs with huge, dark green eyes. Did he dare approach them? He wanted too. Kazrael hadn't dared hope he might Impress, but now that he saw the eggs... He had never succeeded at anything before. But now, he wanted to do so so badly that it almost hurt. Swallowing nervously, he took a step forward on the scalding sands, and paused, eyes darting towards the Queen dragoness who gaurded the eggs.
Swallowing again, Kazrael executed a wobbly bow to her, before taking a step closer to the eggs. And then another. He realized, as he felt a sting in his chest, that he had been holding his breath, and let it out in a whooshing exhale. Did he dare to hope that he might Impress? Pushing that thought to the back of his mind, he took another step towards the simplest of the eggs, marvelling at how...perfect it seemed. Trying to remember to breath, he joined the other youth around the group of eggs, eyes wide with awe.

Daran ran in as heard the booming voice of Kaith. He hurried and found a seat as close as he could to the eggs. He smiled as he saw the fractures in one of the large eggs. He waved at Christae, smiling. Looking over the sands he searched for candidates. Suni sat on his shoulder happily.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Kia heard Kaith's voice and hurriedly ran to her barracks. She had been doing poop chores because she had broke something. Finally she reached her barracks and stood there out of breath. Hearing the chirping of a familiar voice she turned to look horrifically at Tokagae. She searched through her drawers, trying to push the thought of what to do with Tokagae to the back of her mind. She pulled out white shirts, white skirts, and all sorts of white things but couldn't find her cerimonial white robes. As she was about to give up and ask Christae what to do she pulled them out. A sliht smile on her face, she changed into her robes and warily remembered she need her sandals. She didn't have many shoes so she had no trouble finding them.
Kia knew Tokagae would come, even if she left him there. With a shrill whistle he came and sat on her shoulder, wrapping his tail around her neck. She ran to the sands but landed on her ankle in an odd way. It was not sprained in any way but it was very painful. She limped to the sands, looking for Nike. Nike had said a while ago that she would watch Tokagae. ((you said that, right?))
Kadan was dozing off when his sleep was interrupted by humming sounds. He quickly ran and got dressed and headed to the sands as fast as he could. He greeted The weyrwoman and her weyrmate and the healer and stood on the sands.
.........................
G'han was on Gerenanth flying around. The eggs hatch. Let's watch. G'han agreed saying, "Kadan and the other candidates are probably already there and Rhia should be on her way. Let's make haste".
(I forgot to add this.) Tonu and Karie popped from between and flew near Nike. Miya had strictly told then tgat they must stay with the healer or another that wasn't on the sands. Karie didn't dare disobey the threatening message. And Tonu had just stuck with following what Karie did.
Kaith growled as Miya came towards her eggs. The girl was insolent enough to wish to stand for HER eggs but not to show the respect deserved to a Queen!
Christae waved a greeting to Daran and the others as they came in.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Rhia waited for her passengers to dismount from Mneith and then dropped to the sands herself, racing across, stopping only to bow to Kaith before reaching the stands reserved for dragonriders and special guests. She was excited. Mneith had not stopped humming, even when they had gone /between/ to pick up a Lord and Lady Holder.

Miyw mumbled as Kaith growled angrily at her. She bowed at the queen. She looked over to see her firelizards zooming around Kaith's head. She returned her gaze to the eggs, waiting for her strong powerful dragon to hatch and she would impress it.

Daran smiled, wishing he could go up and sit with Christae. He looked over and saw Kia looking frantically about. He perplexedly wondered what she was doing.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Kia worriedly looked for Nike, beginning to sweat with anxiety. Tokagae chirped happily, clueless to what was happening. She wished she could just go to the sands but Tokagae could not come.
Gerenanth flew to the sands and G'han lept off. He went to be with his weyrmate and watched as some of the eggs started to shake and crack. He smiled remembering the day he had impressed. He pulled Rhia close to him, everything seemed so much better when she was in his arms.
.........................
Kadan waved as Tayrin made his way to the sands. Tayrin was one of the few friends he had and the fact that he was a candidate meant he could relate more to him. Sharan flew to G'han, the candidate had instructed the firelizard to stay with him while the hatching took place.
Smoothing his white robe nervously, Kazrael shifted on the sands with some discomfort. He hadn't noticed before, he realized, how sharding hot they were, or how few of his peers were showing it as much as he. A droplet of perspiration beaded on his forehead, and his brows furrowed slightly. Why were the sands so hot? He started to wonder, and then recalled that it was a stupid question. Almost every pernese child knew the answer.
The sands had to be heated so that the eggs would harden. It just made it so inconveniant for the Candidates who had to stand on the scorching golden expanses for any length of time... Kazrael tried to smooth an indifferent mask over his features, as his gaze went to the gently rocking eggs. They were so beautiful... He tried to quell the longing that blossomed in him, and failed. There was no way, however, to know whether he would Impress or not. He would simply have to see. This thought brought a sigh to his lips, and a cynical smile quirked them, as he turned his attention hopefully back to the clutch.
Tayrin walked across the hot sands to stand with his friend. He felt compelled to whisper at this point in the Hatching.
"Are you excited?" he whispered happily to Kadan. "I know I am!"
"Very excited. Today could possibly be the day that changes my life. Today I could have a dragon. I have been waiting for this day since I first knew about dragons and the hatching. He looked over to Kaz,"Hey how's it going? By the way this is Tayrin a friend of mine". He heard from G'han that Kaz was a bit shy but he seemed a bit more talkative to him. He figured maybe he could slowly get him to open up and figured introducing him to Tayrin wasn't a bad idea. Kadan wasn't going to pressure the boy but idle chit chat wasn't very intimidating.
G'han motioned to Kia that he could take Tokage off her hands. He was already taking care of Azure and Sharan so one more couldn't hurt.
Kazrael was eyeing the other candidates from under half-lidded eyes as they entered, unashamedly curious of his peers. Surely, not all of them could Impress today. He wanted to see just who else had been deemed worthy to stand at this clutch. He was startled out of his reverie, therefore, by voice of the young man who had introduced himself as Kadan. Surprised, Kazrael's head jerked up from where he had been contemplating the tips of his boots, and nodded slightly to the other Candidate, and the young man standing beside him, also clad in the typical white robe that adorned those wishing to Impress. He was surprised enough by being spoken to, that he actually replied, before realizing it. "Well enough," he started non commitedly, with a very small smile and nod for the other candidate.
"I'm Kazrael," he added after a moment to the other young man. It hadn't really occured to him that some of his peers must have been here for quite a time. After all, many seemed to have friends among riders and Weyr Folk... At this revelation, Kaz -oddly enough- wished that he had been here longer, before the hatchling. And he wished even more that he might be able to stay after. With another slight nod, he glanced back towards the eggs, as if expecting one to break at any moment. A ghost of a smile flickered across the stocky youth's serious features, and he nervously smoothed his white robe.
