Rhia tapped her rolled up hide against her riding boot. She sat perched on a barrel in the Candidate coutyard right outside the Candidate baracks. She had pinned up a hide saying that all of the Candidates were to report to her the next morning and she had also sent word that the drudges and riders should remind the Candidates this morning. She wasn't sure if the Candidates were making a habit of checking the board since the last batch hadn't done their chores and the drudges had been forced to take up the slack. Rhia would make sure that they would check that hide often after today.
She hadn't had a chance to meet all of the new Candidates and she needed a complete list to assign chores again. She had asked that a bell installed that could be heard clear across the weyr to summon the Candidates and Weyrlings. The first time she had rang it, it had startled a lot of the Weyrfolk out but it had worked to gather the W'lings because word had spread that the WLM was looking for them. Now she was about to ring it for the Candidates. Mneith was out on his ledge sunning himself since he wasn't required to help with the Candidates.
Today, she had sent word to the Lower Caverns that the Candidates would be called for at three candlemarks past dawn. It was now three candlemarks and about 15 minutes past and none of them had arrived. She took the special mallet and rang the bell three times. The Weyrlings were summoned with 5 rings. Mneith sent word out to the Weyrling dragons that they were not being summoned but if they saw any of the Candidates, they were to report immediately to the Candidate Master in the courtyard of the Candidate Barracks.
She had a piece of hide to write down names on for her list. She noted them down as they introduced themselves.

Khris was woken up by the bell sounding through the Weyr, heart thumping in his chest from the sudden noise, and he sat up quickly in bed. "Shards," he muttered, tearing the blanket off and and reaching to his bedpost to pull the blue tunic down and tug it over his head. He slipped his feet into the boots on the floor by his bed in the same moment, pushing his heels down while standing up and tugging the band of cloth he used as a belt around his midsection. Once that was secure he sat down to pull the laces on his shoes tight, getting back up to his feet once more afterwards.
The boy started for the exit to the barracks then, running a hand roughly through his hair to try and erase the bed head as he did so. Khris had intended on waking up earlier that morning, but apparently the plan hadn't panned out the way he'd hoped it would. It wasn't as though he wasn't used to waking up early anyway; there'd been plenty of times in the past that he'd had to wake up far earlier than this.
Actually, he thought as he made his way quickly, With all this candidate training, I'll probably be up earlier again too. He blinked once, squinting an eye and quickly backtracking to take a turn he'd almost missed in the halls. Of course he realized that if he impressed there'd definitely be days that he'd have to wake up earlier. A short sprint later and he was exiting out into the courtyard.
Luck seemed to be on his side even despite the fact that he'd overslept; apparently he was at least among some of the first to arrive. He caught sight of the woman perched on the barrel, realizing she must've been the candidate master and suddenly wishing he'd taken more time to straighten his shirt and tunic - possibly hair, though there was never a day that it was anything but scruffy. Khris stepped over to the woman, offering a lopsided smile and nodding his head in greeting. "Hello there. I'm Khris, a candidate here -- well, I mean, obviously." The boy gave a short laugh, realizing he'd been stating the obvious. "I'm guessing your the Candidate Master?"

Zuhayr had just arrived at the Weyr a few minutes before Rhia had rung the bell. He was having a good time standing in the Weyrbowl, with what little of his belongings he had brought with him, as he stared forlornly at the blue dragon rider who was taking off into the sky. It was the same dragon rider that had brought him here, and he wasn't staring at the man because he regretted coming or because he wanted to go back home. It was because the dragon rider was a rather handsome man, and that was Zuhayr's weakness. Well, anyone of the male variety was his weakness, truth be told. He sighed, and wondered if he would ever see that dragon rider again (Who seemed rather uncomfortable as Zuhayr attempted to hit on him) as he bent down and picked up his stuff.
His hands had just grabbed his stuff when a loud bell reached his ears, and it caused him to drop his stuff accidently for it caught him off guard. "What the shards?" He said out loud, looking around only to see what he presumed to be a drudge hustling towards him. "Ah. Good day m'dear." Zuhayr said rather charmingly as he rustled his hair slightly, grinning at the girl. The girl faltered for a moment before informing the new candidate that he was to head to the barracks right away, that was what the bell was for. She gave him the directions he needed and he set off, hoping that he wasn't taking any wrong turns. He was still wondering if he had followed the right directions before he found himself in the candidate courtyard, a woman and another boy there also.
He walked up to them, some of his stuff dragging on the ground slightly. He absent-mindedly scratched at the scar on his eyebrow and grinned, "Is this the right place then?". He probably would have used more manners if he realized that the woman was Rhia, a rather respected woman in Dark Moon, but Khris (Being a male) had caught his eye. Zuhayr eyed the boy for as second and grinned politely at the boy.

Rhia had been watching the Watch Dragon on the rim of the Weyr Bowl. He was an old blue dragon that was one of the few remaining from the time before the old Queen's last clutch. She hoped that he passed peacefully before Thread fell because he was too old to fight.
She looked down to see one of the Candidates she had been waiting for. A flicker of amusement crossed her face as he stumbled over his introduction. Her grey eyes were warm as she smiled and jumped down from the barrel with the ease of one used to mounting and dismounting a rather large brown dragon.
"Rhia of brown Mneith." She gestured towards her weyr where the enormous brown was sunning himself. The brown flicked his tail by way of greeting and went back to his nap. "I am your Candidate Master and I will be your Weyrling Master if you Impress as well. It is a pleasure to meet you."
The auburn-haired woman turned when the newcomer asked if this was the right place. "I take it you just arrived?" She raised one eyebrow at the blunt way he had addressed her. "I am Candidate Master Rhia of brown Mneith. I will give you time to bring your belongings into the Candidate Barracks and get your things set up. Be back in ten minutes." Her voice was nice, but it was the kind of firm niceness that brooked no nonsence. This woman was used to being obeyed and shown respect.
Her face softened a little. "Welcome to Dark Moon Weyr. I hope that you get along well here. What is your name before you go?"

Kestrel was sitting in her rooms with Roksha, writing something down in a bound book full of paper. In truth, she was keeping a journal each day she'd left her home for Dark Moon Weyr. However, when she heard the loud clanging of a bell resounding throughout the Weyr, she grew curious and stepped outside her room to see another girl she recognized from the barracks, who'd she'd briefly met once and so therefore knew her name. "Do you know what the bell is for?" she asked the red-haired girl, who seemed to be heading for the entrance to the barracks.
~~~~~~
Kaiya turned around to see another Candidate girl who went by the name of Kestrel standing behind her. She'd just been asked what the bell was for, so assumed Kestrel hadn't been told. She nodded curtly and then replied, "yes, it's to summon all the Candidates to where we're to meet the Canddiate Master. If you don't know where that is, you may come with me." Kaiya smiled at the other girl, she knew Kestrel mainly kept to herself, she'd hardly ever seen the girl around the barracks and when she had seen her, it was either alone or with another girl, a Weyrling whose name she didn't know. So, she figured that Kestrel likely didn't know where they were to meet, either. Kaiya led Kestrel to the Candidate Courtyard right out front the barracks, and immediately spotted the Candidate Master. Well, no point in simply waiting to be called on, since it was likely Rhia didn't know her name since they'd never even met. With that in mind, she walked over to the woman and made a graceful bow, before saying, "Kaiya reporting in, Candidate Master." She then stood up, waiting for Rhia to respond.
~~~~~~
Kestrel nodded. She'd had no clue they were to meet the Candidate Master today, and was really grateful she'd run into Kaiya, or she might have been very, very late indeed. She followed the other girl until they reached the Candidate Courtyard, which was right out front the barracks. Well, maybe she wouldn't have had so hard a time finding it after all. However, she looked over as Kaiya walked up to Rhia and introduced herself promptly, though she stood back and didn't say anything herself until she was through, and then said quietly, looking a little nervously at the others already gathered, "I'm Kestrel..."
~~~~~~
Raska was sleeping underneath a tree, or at least half-sleeping, as she usually did when she didn't want anyone to sneak up on her or any of that type of thing. She was startled into wakefulness by a loud bell, and sat up, cursing under her breath. Her feline, Kero, had been sleeping in her lap, and he raised his head as he, too, acknowledged the sound of the bell. Raska stood up, looking rather peeved, and then stormed off towards the sound of the bell. From a ways off, she could see there were people she recognized as Candidates standing around someone who looked to be a rider. What was going on? She marched right up to the group, and then said with a scowl, "what's with the sharding loud bell clanging and all that? I was napping and it scared the shells outta' me!" She glared at the woman she saw standing by the bell, crossing her arms over her chest and scowling still.
~~~~~~
Rhiyo had no clue what on earth was going on. He'd been just leaving the barracks when he saw someone standing out front a ways off in the courtyard, ringing a loud bell five times. He wasn't sure what to do, so he stood there nervously looking around to see if there was anyone else who might know what was going on. Once again, he felt out of place, but still he wandered near to where the woman ringing the bell was, and asked politely, "pardon me, miss, but why are you ringing that bell? Is there something going on?"
~~~~~~
Tikal had been one of the few who'd actually seen the hide posted up, but he'd gone to his room to wait, and accidentally drifted off to sleep! When the bells woke him up, he sat up in bed and quickly headed out to the courtyard, only checking in the mirror to make sure his long crimson hair wasn't mussed up too much. It was, as usual, quite in perfect condition. With a smile, he walked to where Rhia was and then announced, "I have arrived! Candidate Tikal waiting for your orders!" He had a playful gleam in his eyes, but that was nothing new. Tikal always expected whatever happened to be interesting.
“Ack!” Riler exclaimed as he heard the bell ring three times, his head turning around this way and that as he rose from his chair in the kitchens. He had intentionally woken up early so that he wouldn’t be late for the meeting. Feeling parched, he had opted to go down and get some klah to help wake him up. Little did he know how much time he had wasted dawdling, and now he was going to be late. Draining the last of the klah in the mug, he set it down on a counter and began to set out to the Candidates Barracks, which weren’t terribly far from the kitchens.
He couldn’t help but feel relieved when he realized that not many other Candidates had arrived yet. Or maybe Riler was just expecting there to be more Candidates in the Weyr. He didn’t actually know how many there were, at the moment, more seemed to come every so often that he couldn’t keep track.
Riler stepped into the group of other Candidates and looked down at his attire; it was a mess. He quickly began to straighten himself out, trying to make his appearance seem at least a bit more acceptable. Satisfied with the quick work of taking some crinkles out of his shirt and straightening his vest, he patted his hair down and looked up at Rhia, the Candidate Master. “Candidate Riler, reporting in!” He said briefly, looking at the Candidate Master with a small smile. He hadn’t talked to Rhia a lot, but from the brief encounters he had experienced with her, she seemed like a friendly but stern individual. He supposed you had to be stern when you’re a teacher, for that’s what she was, wasn’t she? A teacher.
Khris smiled with a bit of releif when the woman answered him and confirmed what he'd thought. When she'd motioned towards the brown dragon on the far ledge the boy had looked over and given a nod of greeting in the brown's direction before turning back to his rider and offering a nod to her as well. "Great to meet you both, then," he spoke in reply, "And sorry if I was a bit late."
It was about then that the other boy had come up to them and started speaking to the Candidate Master. Khris caught sight of the light smile that was sent in his direction and returned a lopsided smile of his own to the boy before stepping away from the two to stand a bit away. He'd just come to stand off to the side just as more Candidates started arriving, seemingly having just gotten out of the way before the flood of them stepped forward to introduce themselves to the Candidate Master.
He recognized them all from having seen each of them at one point or another in the barracks and the through the Weyr, but he'd only spoken directly to a few of them. He'd met and spoken with Kestral for a bit at the Gather, and so gave a quick wave in her direction when she'd entered into the courtyard. Not long after that he offered a wave to Tikal as well; Khris hadn't exactly been at the best state of mind when he'd helped Tikal and another boy get supplies on his first day in the weyr, but he'd been well enough to recognize him, and he didn't want to seem rude or anything by not greeting the few candidates he'd actually spoken to.
He grinned and nodded as the woman asked if he had just gotten there, “Yes ma’am. Just a few minutes before I heard the bell and someone told me to come here.”. He scratched his head and offered the woman a lopsided but apologetic smile and bowed to her, “Ah sorry, sorry. I didn’t know the candidate master was going to be so young.”. Of course this was what he did, unintentionally flirt. Or perhaps it was intentionally flirt, he had no problem with complimenting people and he also had no problem about saying his sexuality if someone asked. He grabbed his stuff, grateful that he was being given extra time to put away his stuff and tossed a look over his shoulder as he headed off. “Thanks, I’m Zuhayr.”
He quickly headed towards what he assumed were the barracks, passing quite a few people on his way. He smiled politely at them as he passed, walking briskly towards his destination. Within a few moments, he found himself in the barracks and quickly dropped his stuff off near the side of the room since he didn’t want it to be in anyone’s way. He spent a couple of seconds to look around the room quickly; he was rather curious what Dark Moon life would be like. He ruffled his hair and turned around, heading back to the courtyard. Of course when he reached it, there seemed to be way more people than there was before. He eyed each person, especially the guys since he couldn’t help himself and grinned broadly to himself. He could now say truthfully that the people here seemed better looking than back at home, and he didn’t mean that superficially or shallow. He was just innocently blunt that way.
Rhia smiled a bit at Zuhayr's comment about her age and motioned for him to be off after he gave his name. "You needn't worry about being late at the moment Khris. It seems my message did not make its way around. That will be remedied. I just expect that it will not happen again.
"Good day Candidate Kaiya." Her voice held her approval of the girl's greeting. Before she could finish, the other girl spoke up. "Good day to you as well Candidate Kestrel. A pleasure to meet both of you. I am Rhia of brown Mneith, Candidate Master and Weyrling Master." Rhia's eyes widened and then flashed with anger when another girl demanded, quite rudely to know what was going on. "I will deal with you shortly." She said in a clipped voice.
"I have summoned you to meet with me so that I may make you acquaintance. I am your Candidate Master. I would like you to tell me your name so that I may have a list of who will be standing. Good day Tikal and good day to you as well Riler."
"Now for you." She turned to the rude arrival.
Uh oh. Mneith raised his head, his tail twitching. It had been quite a while since someone had riled his rider up in such a manner. It was good to know she still had spirit but it meant extra chores for the girl if she didn’t straighten up.
“I am your Candidate Master and the bell is because you are about twenty minutes later than the time I set for you to be here. If you had bothered to check your Candidate board, or even listen to the messages the drudges and riders were passing around, you would have known what on Faranth’s green Pern is going on.” Grey eyes flashed with a cold anger. This little tunnel snake would learn some manners before she finished with her. “You miss need to learn how to address a full rider. I have been raised to both Candidate Master and Weyrling Master in this weyr and it is seldom I see one such as you. If you do not know the rider’s rank you bow and say ‘Good day Rider, my greetings to you and your dragon.’ In my case, you should recognize my shoulder knots. If your hold Harper was lax or you didn’t have one I will be certain to teach you. Make the mistake of demanding knowledge from a full rider like that again and I will have you scrubbing the greasiest pots and changing glows for a sevenday, more if it is needed."
"Am I understood?"
Shino had been awaken out of his slumber by the bed. He grumbled slightly and rubbed his allready messy brown hair. "Dang it... I was hoping for a few more minutes of sleep." He muttered as he got ready and walked out towards the candidate courtyard. Shino sighed as he strapped his boots on silently, testing the soles to see if he needed to replace them yet. He put a small bag on his back contain what emergency supplies he might need. He looked at it, then just shrugged and left it behind, walking out towards the gathering area.
As Shino walked out, his sapphire blue eyes scanned the group of candidates heading there along with him. 'So many candidates, so few dragon eggs...' he thought as he continued walking. He yawned as he trudged sleepilly. In all honesty, he was still half asleep from waking up early, but he was used to it. Shino knew he would wake up soon enough to be fully alert by the time he reached the assembly area.
As he walked in, Shino looked around and approached the Candidate master. "Hello there... I take it you are the Candidate Master... I am Shino, a new candidate to Dark Moon Weyr transferred from the southern Weyr...." He greeted politely, trying to keep himself as respectful as possible to his superior. He knew his place, and it wasn't to lofty either.
Kestrel waved sort of slowly at Khris, was still nervous and trying to simply concentrate on what the Weyrling Master was saying to her. She couldn't focus on this many people at once, not after it being just her and Hasima conversing and interacting for the most part. She was entirely uncomfortable in group settings such as these. When the Weyrling Master wished her a good day, it seemed only appropriate to her to reply as politely as she could, "good day to you as well." With a nod of her head, she quickly retreated backwards to a spot that was nearer to Khris than anyone else, but further away from everyone in general. She felt ill at ease, and wanted to give herself a spot where she might be able to lessen that feeling.
~~~~~~
Kaiya nodded respectfully to Rhia, and replied with a smile, "both? What an honor!" She was sincerely impressed, and then added, "please wish your Mneith a good day for me, Candidate Master, if you'd be so kind, and good day to you as well." She also took a step back then, allowing for others to step in and give their names as she and Kestrel had done. She looked over to where Kestrel had been moments before, but the other girl had wandered off to the back of the group, further away from everyone else. She knew the girl was shy, but was she also uneasy around this many people? She decided it wasn't her business, and turned her attention back to Rhia so that she wouldn't miss anything that might be said that was prudent to her.
~~~~~~
Tikal grinned at the Candidate Master and stood waiting for whatever came next. He wondered why they'd been called, but that was answered a moment later when Rhia addressed the Candidate with shorter black hair who'd shown up and stormed over to her demanding to know what was going on. He suppressed a chuckle-her attitude wouldn't get her anywhere when it came to dealing with riders. Maybe she'd been used to getting away with that kind of thing before, but Tikal didn't think she'd be able to pull that off with too many of the full riders. He could tell that Rhia wasn't one that would take that sort of nonsense. So, bemused, he watched the proceedings quietly, taking a step into the center of the group so as not to seem to obtrusive.
~~~~~~
Rhiyo looked nervous when the Candidate Master who introduced herself as Rhia began addressing him. He didn't want to upset her, and wasn't sure if he had or hadn't. He wasn't quite sure how a rider was to be addressed, but he'd seen how the others-save the one girl-had respectfully addressed her and thought that it was likely because she was of some sort of importance and therefore must be someone he should treat respectfully, too. So, he said in a voice that sounded more un-confident than he'd have liked, "R-Rhiyo, m'aam. I'm supposed to-er-stand at the Hatching. As a Candidate, I mean. Umm..." he trailed off, his face flushing a deep crimson. He felt he was making a complete fool out of himself in front of the other Candidates, and hated not for the first time that he, unlike the rest of them, couldn't remember how he was supposed to act in what situation, or what was what. He swallowed nervously, and since he didn't know what else to say, stood there silently awaiting her reply.
~~~~~~
Raska didn't like the way the woman by the bell told her in a cold tone that she would 'deal with her shortly'. No, she didn't like it at all. However, she spent her time while Rhia was addressing the others analyzing the woman. Everything was a telltale sign of what sort of person she was dealing with, from body language to the way she spoke. So, before Rhia was done talking to the others, she'd ascertained that she ought not to overstep any lines with this particular individual. However, she'd arrived soon enough to overhear what Rhia had said to the others, and she was good at knowing where she was right on something and where she shouldn't bother saying what she wanted. She stood there impassively as Rhia spoke, her face giving away nothing. Not even her eyes, which stared straight into those of the other, gave the slightest hint or deviation of what she was thinking. So, when Rhia was done speaking, she replied in a tone that was unreadable and as impassive as her expression, "Perfectly. However, did anyone else here know what was going on? Seems to me everyone is as late as I am, and so therefore why say to the one that he needn't worry, while berating me in front of everyone for being late?" With a meaningful glance at Khris, she then looked back to Rhia and went on, "no one informed me of any board. I arrived here shortly ago, and your message didn't reach me, as no one made a point to make sure all the Candidates would know for certain what this was about. " She then paused, looking at Rhia's shoulder knots and adding, "I was too far away to see the knots. My apologies...dragonrider. Candidate Raska here." There was no tone of any sort to her apology, just as everything else she'd said had betrayed no tone of anything. So, if Rhia were to tell her off for being disrespectful, it was not through any of her own doing.
Tieler couldn't believe that some one would be idiotic enough to ring off a bell while she was trying to sleep. She sat up quickly, cursing; "Shards, what's up with all this nonsense?" she asked. She could see other Candidate girls getting up and out of their beds below her. "So what" she yelled down at them, "we're trained to come to a bell, is that it? Pathetic, that's what I have to say about this." Regardless of her voiced opinions she slid down off of her top bunk and got ready as quickly as she could. She pulled on a pair of her larger-then-they-should-be pants along with one of her shorter-then-it-should-be tunics. She combed out her red hair so that it was straight rather then sticking up. When she made her way to where every one else was she pushed past a few people, not bothering to see if she'd accidentally caused some one to sprawl on to the floor. She looked for the only Candidate she really knew other then Riler, whom she'd just spotted: Raska. She stood beside her partner in crime, crossing her arms over her chest. "Figured out what this is shardin' about?" she asked the girl, scoffing in irritation. Her blue eyes were cold and revealed her extremity of anger. She didn't bother to acknowledge Rhia, never paying attention to any one that felt they could even begin to tell her what to do. ~~~
Leander arranged his things in the Boys Candidate Barracks, looking around the place with a positive nod of his head. He put one hand on his hip coolly, eyeing a few of the boys that were jumping out of bed in a rush. He'd heard the bell sound off himself but hadn't the faintest clue as to what it was for. Is this supposed to mean something to me? he wondered in confusion, noting how loud and throbbing the sound of the bell really was. He placed his gitar down gently on to his cot, heaving a sigh of irritation. "Go figure, no girls," he complained while following the crowd of people. He raised his head up to see what all the commotion was about, spotting a woman at the front whom had something in her hand that she was writing on. He listened intently, hearing people introducing themselves to her. Just go along with the crowd, he smirked, noting that some girls were-to his liking-out here. He passed by Kestrel, seeing that she was already engaged in a conversation with a young boy, Khris. Too late, he thought, looking around to see what girls were standing apart from the others. His gaze fell on Kaiya for a moment before he set eyes on the last two girls that were up front: Tieler and Raska. He seemed to appreciate Tieler's show of skin, staring at her midsection as if there was nothing else around. He then looked over at Rhia, realizing that she may have been taking note of his actions the entire time. He looked over at Raska, flashing her a quick smirk before he gave his full attention to Rhia.
"Hello there," he said in greeting, clearing his throat gently. He bowed low to her, respectfully, as a Harper ought to. "I just arrived here, I'm Journeyman Harper Leander... a Candidate now I guess... Don't ask me how that'd configure in to the title because I haven't got a clue." He chuckled at his own words, even though it wasn't all that funny. "I'm guessing we'll be debriefed any moment now so its not like I'll ask what this is about," he added. He looked back over at Raska, having noted that the girl didn't look too pleased. "You all right?" he asked her in a lower voice, "if you want later I could show you some really great activities for venting out anger." He winked flirtatiously, eyes diverting back down to Tieler's midsection. He shook his head back and forth, "I'm going to like it here," he said to himself quietly. He then looked back to Rhia, again having gotten completely sidetracked. He knew that he was willing to work hard while he was here but right now he just wanted to check out the girls and have a little fun. He hadn't really ever spent a lot of time in a Weyr so he didn't realize that there could be so many benefits, such as feisty girls who could easily give him a run for his marks. His bangs covered his one brown eye but as soon as he pushed his bangs off to the side one could clearly see that his eyes were two different colours.
Khris watched as other candidates continued to step into the courtyard, quirking an eyebrow a the Candidate Master's comment to the candidate who'd given her a rather rude introduction. He sent a brief glance over in the direction of the Weyrs at the brown's comment just before Rhia started to have words with the candidate in question. Judging by the expression on the Candidate Master's face, the boy would have to agree with the dragon's apprehension. But she had it coming to her with the way she'd burst into the courtyard. Nobody else there was likely to have enjoyed being woken up by a bell, but they weren't going on about it.
Giving off a light sigh, Khris let his legs crumble beneath him and he fell into an indian-style seated position in the courtyard. Judging by the amount of candidates pouring into the courtyard, they weren't going to be starting anything as a group for a while. He'd just leaned forward to rest his chin on his hand when he caught sight of the girl near the Candidate Master (Raska, as was revealed a moment later) looking back at him. He sat up and let his hands rest on his ankles, squinting an eye lightly and quirking the eyebrow of the other.
Khris didn't think he knew her from anywhere, otherwise he would've offered her a wave when she walked in as well - and judging by her entrance, she didn't seem like the sort that he'd end up befriending anyway. The boy shrugged it off and turned away to look over the courtyard once more, leaning back on his hands to continue waiting for something to start up, or for them to be let loose. Either way worked.
Zuhayr stood, politely waiting as he hooked his hands behind his head and rocked back and forth on the balls of his feet. He didn't even bother to try and hide the small grin that appeared on his face as the Candidate Master briskly addressed some girl, who apparently had been rude. He gave a three fingered salute and a slightly sleepy grin and introduced himself again, this time for the other people who had appeared. "The names Zuhayr.". His hand fell down to his side as he raised an eyebrow at Rhia's speech/ scolding to Raska and suddenly found himself respecting the brown rider more with every passing second. His favourite kind of people, other than the male kind, was people who didn't stand for rudeness. And funny people, they were his favourite kind too.
He looked over at Kaiya, grinning as he noticed her politeness. "Ha, I like you already." Zuhayr said with a nod as he tried to make eye contact with the girl. Of course he wasn't wasting any time chatting people up, whether or not he even meant too. Of course his attention was distracted for a minute as he noticed Rhiyo, who was stumbling over his introduction. Zuhayr grinned to himself, taking note of the boy sub-conciously. He listened to Raska's almost cold and disrespectful reply and found himself picturing Rhia tackling the girl down. Of course he doubted it would actually, but the scene in his head was quite funny.
Zuhayr sidled up beside Tieler as the girl appeared and nodded, "It's about being respectful towards Candidate Masters." His voice dropped into a conspirational whisper, "I heard if you don't, you're stuck washing the greasiest things you could imagine. What a terrible fate." He looked down at his clothes and fingered the material, "D'you know what a sharding pain it is to get grease out? It's worse than death itself.". He looked away from Tieler as Leander made his appearance and hid a smile as he noted the boys looks. How couldn't he? It was what he did.
"It is not your place to question me Candidate, especially not in such a manner. However, I will answer you in this instance because I feel you need to know the reason why I chastized you. I did not chastize you for being late, although all of you will be taken to task for not being more sharp. Believe me, I will not punish all of you because you were late. That would be an exercise in futility. Simply, it will not happen again. I expect all of you to be on time the next time I summon you. I should not have to ring that bell again unless I am summoning you without prior notice, which will happen from time to time."
Her voice was dead calm, and as cool as the Candidate's had been. She could play that game as well as any.
"If you had answered me with respect Candidate Raska, you would have received a similar answer from me as the others did. Instead you rudely demanded an answer from one who is obviously your superior, whether you could see my knots or not. Any person who has any sense can see that I am a dragonrider. Any dragonrider is your superior and you are expected to obey him or her and treat that rider with respect regardless of the dragon's color or rank. As for you not knowing about the meeting or the Candidate board, it seems almost all of you were lax in determining what was required of Candidates. If you had asked any drudge or W'ling, they would have told you about the board. Some of you knew about it but had become lax in checking for announcements. That will be remedied immediately."
She turned away from the Candidate, obviously dismissing the girl and began to write names on her hide again. She raised an eyebrow when yet another Candidate arrived and rudely demanded to know what was going on.
"It seems your first lesson will be in respect." She mused in an almost thoughtful voice. "I will not tolerate swearing during my classes. Neither will I tolerate such rude insubordination from any of you. Let this be your only warning. Your name Candidate." Grey eyes appraised the clothing that was on the girl and her forehead creased in a frown. Apparently, she wasn't the only one who had noticed the shortness of the girl's tunic. That would not be allowed. Not with her as CM.
"Get a girl pregnant Candidate Leander and you will be forced to pad your belly with enough weight to equal a baby and do chores like that for the nine months that a woman carries a child." Her voice was sugary sweet as she spoke. When she finished her voice returned to a more businesslike tone. "Your title will be Candidate here until you become a full rider, if you Impress. Then you will have the option of studying with the Weyr Harper to reach your master's status and be a Weyr Harper. It is up to you as to whether or not you wish to become a Master. We have a young Apprentice who has been working with the Weyr Harper to reach her Journeywoman status. I believe she will reach it soon." She wrote his name down and turned back to the redhead.
"As for you, girl, you will return to the Barracks and don more appropriate clothing immediately. You are a Candidate, not a harlot. Once you become a rider, that manner of clothing will be up to you but while you are my pupil you will not wear such things. Unless you are at the lake or the beach I will not see anything that bares so much skin."
She waited for the girl's name and scanned the growing crowd for more arrivals.
As Riler was acknowledged by Rhia, he grinned and gave a short bow. “Good day to you, Candidate Master, and your dragon.” However, he felt like his acknowledgment went unnoticed, for Rhia’s attention was turned to another Candidate who has said something rude to her. Looking at the rude Candidate, Riler gave a small, nearly inaudible sigh; Raska. He couldn’t say he was really surprised, but he was a little disappointed. He liked the girl, for what it was worth. But this was not a great way of starting off with your Candidate Master, and possibly future Weyrling Master. Riler wondered if she even cared about that, because last Riler knew, Raska didn’t care to Impress. He shrugged.
He knew that the scolding of another Candidate wasn’t something he should find funny, but Riler had to try his hardest to keep himself from snickering, or even looking remotely interested. Of course, Riler agreed that Rhia deserved their respect—as all dragonriders did—and he found it a little odd that it should have to be explained to Raska. Riler wondered whether or not Raska was sincere with her apology; he thought it could go either way with her, whether or not she meant it.
Tieler then came into view, instantly moving to Raska. Figures, Riler thought to himself, they seem like they’re two peas in a pod; she, too, was being scolded by Rhia. Riler again had to do his best to keep a straight face as Rhia called Tieler a prostitute. As Rhia ceased to talk, Riler sighed. He shrugged his shoulders and began to watch as more and more people came into the courtyard. He couldn’t help but wonder, now that he could see everyone, who would Impress? And what would they Impress? Riler thought it might have something to do with their personality, but he knew that there was so much more to it than that. What did attribute to it, though? Riler was curious, but he felt like he would never know. Maybe it was just one of life’s mysteries.
Staying quiet while more and more people arrived and introduced themselves to the Candidate Master, Riler observed his fellow Candidates. Listen and learn, he thought to himself, it was a great way to learn about the people he’d probably be growing up with; for better or for worse. Riler wasn’t terribly worried about Rhia’s threat about the Candidate’s being punished for being late. It could be a lot worse, he reasoned. Of course, he didn’t voice this opinion out loud.
'Shards, this woman is tough... She reminds me of my mother....' He thought with slight apprehension. Shino looked around, watching the group being scolded. 'Respect... a lesson beaten into me in the hardest way in the Southern Weyr...' he thought as he mentally rolled his eyes. He looked at the others, wondering about the reason he was summoned. He moved a strand of hair out of his eyes as he waited, hoping this wasn't all there was.
Soon Hirako came running out, hoping she wasn't too late. She barely made it as she came to a stop amongst the crowd of other candidates. She hardly had time to organize her stuff before having to run out to avoid being late. The only thing Hirako had time to do was to put her tunic and pants on. As she wiped the dust off, she breathed a sigh of relief. "I hope I am not to late." She said to no one in particular.
(sorry Spirithawk... I've only read a small excerpt from one of the books, from which I cannot remember... Please bear with me as I am learning each time I roleplay.)
Marletta had gotten up early this day, and sat on her bed combing the tangles out of her hair with an intricately designed wooden comb. She wore a dark blue skirt and a simple white tunic on her first day of candidacy. The girl looked to the door when she heard the three rings of the bell echoing throughout the Weyr. She watched as the other female candidates raced out of the door to the source of the bell. Marletta, however, hurried to the bathing room to wash her face. She splashed a couple handfuls of cold water on her face before following the other girls, hoping they knew the right way to go.
The girl arrived at the candidate courtyard just in time to hear Rhia scolding Raska, Leander, and Tieler. The two girls she had seen before but not this boy Leander. What had Rhia said about him getting a candidate pregnant? Marletta glanced at the boy giving him a strange look. She waited her turn before curtseying to Rhia, “Good morning to you and your dragon, Candidate Master. I am Marletta, please forgive my lateness,” she said while looking down at the ground.
