Mneith saw Ebbeth move and realized that they would hinder each other if they both tried to take off. Besides, his wing span was large and he didn't want to hit his clutch mate.
I'm going to hover in case something goes wrong clutch-brother. The brown told Ebbeth. I don't want us to try and launch at the same time and foul up each other's wings. The massive brown launched himself carefully and used his wings to keep himself aloft while watching his rider and the scuffle closely.

Tieler knew that Raska was right; they couldn't keep going at this pace forever. Tieler hadn't intended to anyhow, just until they were far enough along that they'd left every one else behind in the dust. "Oh, all right," was all Tieler could give in response to what Raska was telling her about her feline so that she could continue to come off as otherwise emotionless. Every intention that Tieler had to beat every one else vanished when she heard something familiar... a fight cry. She stopped dead in her tracks, whipping her head back in the direction of the other runners. At first she had thought she'd imagined the cry; that she'd simply fallen in to another one of her flashbacks. As much as her memories were always unwelcome she would've rather it have been them haunting her when she spotted the two boys on the ground. She didn't know either one of them but she bet that she probably would meet them at one point or another.
She remained standing there, as if completely frozen. She didn't dare say a single thing, just remained as an onlooker. Do something... Try to do something this time... She felt her heart rate quicken and her stomach lurch, a nauseous feeling overwhelming her. She coughed a few times, bending over to place her hands on her knees. She heaved also, though nothing came out. Then with a shake of her head she stood back-up, betting that Raska would only think that she'd pushed herself too hard to get ahead of the race. ~~~
Leander chuckled, looking down before he kept eye contact with her again. He made a small sound in resemblance of a snicker, "Well, I've always been the lucky type..." He switched to running in front of her, turning around so that he could literally be face-to-face with her while engaged in this most delightful conversation. "Why don't you come a little bit closer so I can see just how sweet you really are..." His comment died away on his lips when he heard the shouts of a boy, and the Candidate Master's own high-pitch blended in. When Akki took off toward the source of the commotion he followed promptly on her heels. At the sight of the two boys, the one on top of the other, he rolled his eyes.
"Now come on here!" he threw in, "I'm sure the both of you would much rather be putting that kind of time and energy in to a girl, hm?" He had no clue what this fight was about but he only fought when he either felt like it, for no apparent reason, or when some one offended him. So, basically, he tended to get in to a lot of useless tussles. He could see that Rhia and Akki were now both trying to handle it as best they could. He stayed aside to let them both do there job, though he would offer assistance if he saw fit to do so. He had always been taught to promote peace as a respectable Harper but what he preferred was creating upheavals, by disrupting the peace, and then recreating the peace until one felt that it was time for a disruption again. "As long as it always comes back to the main idea," Leander amused himself by saying aloud.

Xyrion heard the voice of the Candidate Master calling for him to stop, but not before he said in a voice more a snarl than anything to the boy beneath him, "don't play stupid. You know exactly what I'm talking about, and if you don't give it back I'll take it back, by any means necessary!" He was dead serious. If he had to fight this boy for it, if he had to steal it back like it was stolen from him, so be it!
He then noticed that the Assistant Candidate Master was now there, and looked up to see two very large dragons above him. He tried to calm himself in his fury, and stood up and faced both the Candidate Master and the Assistant Candidate Master coolly, expressionless so that neither would think he meant them any disrespect in his anger at the thieving wherry on the ground. He stood there, waiting for them to say something, so he could at least tell them exactly why he'd bothered with this useless lump of a dung heap. He motioned to Kiran on the ground and then said, "I was merely protecting what's mine, and I want what he stole back!" His gaze held pride and defiance, for he would brook no stealing to begin with, let alone of that which had been stolen! He stood up as tall as he could, looking first Akki, and then Rhia in the eye, to show he meant what he had said.
~~~~~~
Raska had to skid to a quick stop when Tieler suddenly stopped dead, and looked on in confusion as the girl stared directly at where one boy was atop another, larger boy, in the dirt. Well, she knew Tieler liked to fight, that much was all too obvious. She seriously didn't intend to try and get in on this one, did she? She frowned slightly, and then her eyes widened a little when Tieler suddenly hunched over and retched, her nose crinkling up in displeasure at the sound. Raska was no girly girl who was sickened by the sight of a little blood, but if there was one thing that made her sick, it was vomiting. She was completely grateful that though Tieler had retched, nothing that she felt was meant to stay inside came outside! However, with a tone tinged with what was obviously concern, she asked warily, "are you gonna' be okay or what? I warned you not to just sprint like that for so long, you know..." However, she had an odd feeling deep within the pit of her stomach that the running? Wasn't what had caused the red-head to retch like that. What, could she fight, but not stand to see others fight, was that it? Tieler was certainly odd at times, shouting out things that didn't make sense or seemingly having reactions to things Raska wouldn't have thought bothered her. Well, they hadn't known each other that long yet, so she supposed there was time to figure it all out.
~~~~~~
Tikal frowned and turned his head around in time to see Rhia, Akki and two dragons coming towards two candidates who looked like they were in a brawl. What could have happened? He felt a brief moment of concern that maybe one or the other had been hurt, but the other boy had stood up and the one on the ground wasn't looking like he was in pain or anything, so he kept running, his eyes not leaving the scene, however. Perhaps after he would inquire about what had gone on-probably to the boy underneath the other, at that...
~~~~~~
Kestrel was further ahead than many, and she didn't hear when Rhia yelled out to Xyrion, nor did she see what had happened. No, she was busy keeping her pace and trying to accomplish her run, and so into it was she that she kept right on running, absorbed in her own thoughts!
~~~~~~
Kaiya, however, was right near when Xyrion began running and when he jumped the other boy. She had actually had to jump out o the way of Xyrion's dead run, and her mouth dropped when he suddenly tackled Kiran to the ground. She got there at the same time as Rhia, her face a mask of irritation and disgust as she said loudly, "HEY! Knock it off already, you two! What is it you think you're doing!" If Akki hadn't arrived as well as Rhia, she had been quite ready to haul the other boy off of the taller one. She didn't like physical violence-it was never the answer. She didn't know why Xyrion had jumped Kiran, nor did she personally care-they should have dealt with it maturely, not this way! She took a respectful step back for Rhia and Akki, standing just a little behind them to see what had happened.
~~~~~~
Rhiyo yelped and jumped out of the way just as another runner came skidding to a stop, on his back, with another candidate on top of him-right at his feet. He took an uneasy step back and then stuttered, "w-what are you two doing?" It was weak, his attempt to break it up, and a lousy one at that. So he was more than a little relieved to see Rhia come running up, followed by Akki-and two dragons? He looked up overhead, backing up a bit more and feeling a little uneasy. Should he just keep running, or should he be okay seeing what was going on like that red-haired girl looked like she was doing? Well, he was curious, but he didn't want to get into unnecessary trouble with anyone. He bit his lower lip and uneasily looked about to see what others' reactions were. Well, no one was running save one girl who was now out ahead of everyone, and a boy who was obviously watching while jogging slowly. So, he made up his mind to see what was going on, though from a bit more of a distance than the red-haired girl who looked rather irate with the two on the ground.
"I promise you," he replied, making sure to keep his voice level so as not to add any offense to what he'd apparently already given, "I've no idea what you're talking about." Kiran looked over to the Candidate Master and her assistant as they hurried over, breathing a light sigh of relief that help had arrived. Honestly, he was just as confused as they were, and after the boy's returning comment he'd been worried that things were going to get physical - something he wasn't familiar with at all.
When he was finally released, Jilstherakiran got quickly to his feet and drew himself to his usual stance. He brushed the majority of sand off of his clothes and rubbed at his friction-burnt chin gently for a moment before looking over to address the two Riders just before the boy who'd just tackled him did. "I apologize for the commotion," he said first. "I'd offer an explanation...but I know just as little as you."
Kiran looked over to the other boy as he blurted out his explanation. "Stolen?" he asked, his face immediately falling into confusion. "I haven't taken anything from you. The first time I've even laid eyes on you was just now, when you were pulling me to the ground." But if he was nothing else, Kiran was reasonable. He didn't want this to offend the boy any further than he apparently already had. "What is it you're saying I've taken from you?"
---
Khris hadn't heard the commotion either, but he did see Tikal looking over across the Weyrbowl out of the corner of his eye. The boy turned to look as well, though he kept his pace up as he did so, and blinked in surprise at the scene unfolding with the two candidates and Riders. He was curious, of course, but not enough that he planned on asking either of the candidates about it later.
shuffled to the side after Mneith explained what he was doing and grinned almost bashfully. It seems you thought out the things I didn’t. It was true too, he didn’t think of that. He was too caught up in the moment, wanting to be ready to help out. Of course if him and Mneith did take off the same time, he wouldn’t be so much helping but making it worse instead.
“No, you won’t take anything back by any means necessary.” Akki warned as she looked at Xyrion. If something happens in the weyr, it wasn’t a candidate’s duty to fix it. That’s why there were mentors for them and people higher up, so people could talk to them if needed. The blue rider let out a low whistle as the boy made out his statement, proclaiming that he just wanted what was originally his. “Theft is a serious accusation, you know.” Akki said with a slight frown as she flicked some dirt off of the boys shoulder. “And if anything was stolen, you should tell one of us. Don’t take it into your own hands.” She looked over at Rhia and sighed softly. So much for a relaxing candidates lesson.
She looked over to Jilstherakiran and was about to offer the boy her hand so she could help pull him up off of the ground, but before she could he had already stood up and brushing himself off from the scuffle. She watched as the boy seemed almost surprised by what was going on, he definitely looked confused that was for sure. But most of all, Akki noticed, was that the boy looked quite sincere as he informed Rhia and herself that he had absolutely no idea what was going on.
"Candidates stay here. We will continue our laps as soon as this is dealt with and then I will show you to the Lower Caverns for some fresh fruit juice. After that we will show you around the weyr." Her voice was clipped, showing that she was barely holding her temper in check.
Rhia was furious. "We do not handle our disputes with fistfights Candidate Xyrion! Someone could have been seriously injured. You will report to the drudges for Kitchen work for the next sevenday in addition to the regular chores I will assign you. This has nothing to do with the fact that you claim Kiran stole something from you, but for the manner in which you handled it. ACM Akki was right, if you had a suspicion about something you should have taken it up with either me or her not go out and tackle the lad while you are running laps for your Candidate Lesson. You will do those extra chores for disrupting my lesson and starting a fight."
She planted her hands on her hips, her nostrils flaring as she calmed her temper. Never had she seen such a display from her Candidates. She listened to Kiran's claim of not knowing what was going on.
"Now, for the matter at hand. What is it that Kiran has supposedly stolen Xyrion? I will hear both of your statements and neither one of you will interrupt while the other is talking. Once we have heard both sides, Akki and I will decide what to do about it."
Xyrion never got to snarl back at Kiran what he 'had taken' from him, for in the next instant both Assistant CM and CM were there, and he was being rebuked for his actions. Well, he certainly hadn't thought out that whole 'running tackle' thing. It wasn't even like him to lose his temper and go and do something physical about it. He'd just snapped, and done it on instinct. However, he didn't really expect that this would get him anywhere with the CM. She was right, he knew it, and he couldn't really blame her for laying on the harshness. She couldn't have given him a worse chore than Kitchen work-people everywhere, it would be a living nightmare for him to have to do that. Well, at least it would keep him busy. Or so he mused, trying to think of some reason not to sit there and fume about the kind of extra chores Rhia had just assigned him to.
When Rhia told him he could speak, he was silent a moment, and, temper having at least resolved itself by half, now that he knew he would get what was rightfully his back, he held up his arm and then pointed at it-though coincidentally not looking at it-and said, "I usually wear a black band around my wrists. No one on Pern can have the exact same bands..." here he paused, not really wanting to reveal to these people why, but knew he had to. "My mother made them for me, and sent them to me as a gift." He glared at Kiran accusingly, for there was no way now that the other boy could claim he'd gotten the exact same ones from some market. His mother had been no crafter, she'd had to work long and hard and the bands were actually quite beautifully done, treated just so so that they would last in perfect condition for years.
His arm was back down, but anyone who'd looked could have seen the band was on there! He just hadn't looked, was too upset over this all to even calm himself enough to realize that if he'd been thinking clearly and concisely, he might have even felt the bands still there. Things were about to get even more interesting rather fast. He added for further emphasis, "I even have another one on the other arm that matches it, and this one here, on my neck. They're all the same. They couldn't have been duplicated by anyone but my mother-and she said they were only made for her family." He pointed at Kiran, eyes blazing agian, and then said clearly, "HE is NOT family." Oh, could he have known how wrong he was? Only family...
~~~~~~
The rest of the Candidates had stopped and come closer to see what was going on. Obviously others were stopping so they did too, wondering if they were going to be told to continue after this...

Rhia sighed. This was getting more complicated by the minute. "How could he have stolen your bands if they are still on you Candidate Xyrion? Wait don't answer that right now. Let's hear Kiran's side of the story." The CM looked at the other boy expectantly.

When Xyrion lifted his wrist just before he spoke, Kiran blinked at the sight of the band around his wrist. He stared at it in a perplex manner, lifting his left hand and looking at the band around his own wrist. The boy still listened as Xyrion told the rest of his story, but half of his attention was focused on keeping his confusion from getting out of control. Jilstherakiran looked quickly back up at the other boy when he mentioned that his mother had made them for him, listening with an intent gaze as the rest of the explanation was given.
Xyrion pointed accusingly at Kiran towards the end of his speech, bringing the red head to blink and straighten up a bit. "No, of course not," he was quick to agree, his mind jumping to the first rational thought. "I'm from a herding family in a nearby hold, my parents are..." he trailed off then, brow furrowing lightly in a moment of thought. "Well, actually," he went on, lifting his wrist once more and rubbing for a moment at the black band, "I was a fosterling."
Kiran looked up then, coming out of the moment of quiet thought and looking between the two Riders and the other Candidate, settling his gaze on the latter. "I assure you, I didn't take this band from anyone." He hesitated a moment, sifting through memories of the time his parents had first told him about his unknown origins. Kiran didn't want to give any false information, especially in such a...unique situation. Finally he looked up once more. "My parent's told me it'd been left with me, along with a note that had my name on it."

Rhia looked perplexed. "If your parents gave you your bands and yours were left with you when you were fostered out then neither of you could have stolen those bands from each other. I think you had better apologize to each other for the misconception and handle this after class."
She waited to hear what the two boys would say. "The rest of you start running. I will catch up to you after this is settled. Akki, you can join the Candidates or stay with me, your choice."

Akki was trying to examine the boys expressions, looking for anything that might show that one of them was boldly lying in front of Rhia. However, she couldn't find anything. Kiran still looked perfectly perplexed by the accusation that was made and Xyrion's anger seemed to real to be faked. No one could like that perfectly. She said as she continued to listen to their stories, each one with the perfect amount of detail. These stories were too realistic to have been thought up, both of the boys believed that the other was mistaken.
She ran a hand through her hair as Rhia replied back to the boys. She had to agree with the brownrider, it didn't seem possible that the two boys could have stolen from each other. The identical black bands must be nothing more than a queer coincidence. "I'll run with the rest of them Rhia, looks like you got this one handled." She replied with a nod and turned away from the three to face the rest of the group. She made a shooing motion with her hand, "Come on now. Get running or else I'll start nipping at your ankles."

Xyrion hardly heard a word that Kiran had to say, save near the end. He'd been fostered out? What on Pern...he slowly lifted his wrists, both of them, and looked at them. He could hardly believe what he saw there. Both bands. Not one, but both. That was right...he never took them off-but he'd had to take them off the other day, briefly, only for an hour or so...he paled, and then stared hard at Kiran, feeling his stomach twist and turn, hearing that he'd been left with 'a note and a band'. That was impossible-it had to be a lie!
He looked at his own bands for further confirmation, and there they were, black against his slightly tanned skin. His hand drifted up to his neck, but his band was there too. What was going on! He mutely nodded in dumb silence when he was told to apologize, but no words would come out. He just swallowed and opened his mouth but nothing came out. Never in his life had he felt this way. His mind raced, he kept looking at Kiran then at the ground then helplessly at Rhia and then Akki. Could they know what he was thinking? Could that other boy, so different looking than he was, know? He had black hair and grey-blue eyes, the boy had red hair. Was there any chance? He didn't want it to be true. He was a loner, he always had been and that was the way he always wanted it to be. The only one he'd let in was his bronze firelizard, Zero. If he impressed, he'd have his dragon. But another person? A...relative?
Xyrion didn't know any of his family. He'd written them all off because he figured he'd never seen them. The very concept of family was his fostered parents. They were family. Not in the blood-relation sense, but darn good enough for him. His mouth was dry, and finally a cracked, "sorry..." came out. It would have to be good enough. He actually had to sit down on the ground, he felt dizzy all of a sudden. He felt like an idiot.
~~~~~~
Tikal noted Candidates beginning to run again, and so continued. What had gone on, exactly? Whatever it was, it was serious enough for the Candidatemaster to have completely told off that one boy. He saw the boy sit on the ground, and his brows furrowed in concern as he began to run again. He hoped it was nothing so serious that it would cause the boy to react like that...well, he guessed he'd hear about it later...
~~~~~~
Kaiya began running again. It was none of her business, whatever it had been. Nothing she could do about it, nothing she could say, so why worry? The CM and the CMA had it under control. She sighed as she ran, concentrating only on finishing her laps now.
~~~~~~
Rhiyo hadn't seen where Riler went, but he'd looked like he was in a hurry to be gone, for whatever reason. So he continued running by himself and mused over what had just happened. That boy had looked pretty surprised when all was said and done. Rhiyo wondered what he was surprised about...he continued musing over things as he ran along at the best pace he could, noting he was doing all right despite not being sure if he could handle this run. He was in shape, he was finding out. That was a good thing, for him, at least....
~~~~~~
Raska rolled her eyes. Well, that was boring. She didn't see anything happening that was over exciting, so she glanced at Tieler, and then smirked. "Last one there is a rotten wherry egg!" she said, taking off like a shot. She wanted to get this overwith, so might as well make it go as fast as she could-until the cramps took over, that would be!
~~~~~~
Kestrel could only begin running when the others did. She happened to come alongside Khris and gave him a side-smile as she went by, wondering if he'd run along with her. Seemed the boy would be able to keep up-or so she thought? She wasn't sure. Save the ridiculous antics that put Tieler and Raska far ahead of them, they looked to be further ahead than most. She kept running, keeping her breathing even and wondering how long the run would actually take.
[Before I post this, I wanna say that I was planning on Kiran having this reaction before I read your post, Kat! So I'm not copying you, it's just a cool coincidence xP]
Kiran had fallen into a heavy silence as well, barely registering that the candidate master was speaking to them. It was a full round of moments before the words actually sunk in, and even then Kiran only managed to open his mouth and take in a breath. When the boy standing across from him lifted his arms to look at the bands, he followed his gaze to look at them as well. And the few times that the boy looked over towards him, Kiran's eyes met the other's with a confusion level to match. Though neither of them could be sure, his thoughts followed much the same path as Xyrion's.
For so long after he'd been told that he was a fosterling Jilstherakiran had wondered incessantly about his past. Who had his mother been? His father? Which of them did he more closely resemble, or did he have traits from each? Why had they abandoned him to be found by the Hold's foster house in the first place. There were hoards of other questions that had swum through his mind, but in time he'd come to accept that none of them would be answered. He gave up on whatever search he might've been planning and accepted that his curiosity about his past would never be sated. Now, though...another of the larger questions from so long ago surfaced. Did he have any other family out there? Sisters? Or, perhaps, brothers?
Kiran seemingly snapped out of his reverie at the sound of the other boy's voice. He managed a nod as the word came out, and opened his mouth to form an apology of his own with a voice much weaker than his usual tone. "I apologize, as well..." his words trailed off as his train of thoughts veered back to what they'd been moments ago. Then, at the same moment that Xyrion let himself fall into a sitting positon, Kiran felt his legs give out beneath him and he slumped down to sit on his knees.
He stared blankly towards the ground for a moment before looking up with a sudden thought. Back then there had been no hope of finding answers, no leads to go on. But now there was this boy. All the curiosity that had taken over every corner of his mind as a child was flooding through him once again, and the normally calm exterior that Jilstherakiran gave off was suddenly replaced with an excited urgency that was a far cry from the somber confusion he'd been experiencing a moment before. "Xyrion," he said, "That's your name, isn't it?" As he spoke he leaned forward minutely, resting a hand on the ground. "What did your parents look like?"
- - - - - -
Khris had blinked at the sight of the two boys slumping to the ground, feeling his natural curiosity prickling at the back of his neck. But the assistant candidate master was ushering them along then; Khris turned to kicked back into his loping run. He looked over when Kestrel shot him the side-smile, blinking once before returning to her a lopsided grin of his own. If they hadn't been somewhere that required a bit of pacing he'dve likely taken it as a challenge, but instead he thought to just run alongside his friend. They seemed to be evently paced enough to stay alongside each other anyway. Looking ahead, he figured if the other two girls weren't trying to outrun each other so horribly they might've been at about the same pace as he and Kestrel too.
Xyrion wasn't thinking straight at the present moment. Too many thoughts were flooding his head, and he was barely dealing with them rationally. He didn't even bother trying to get up from his spot on the ground, and looked up at Jil in what seemed like pure confusion as the other boy suddenly leaned in and asked 'what his parents looked like'. His next reaction was to get defensive. He didn't know this guy. In fact, technically, this had been their first meeting. Why should he answer that question? Why was it even any of this guy's business? He looked back blankly at the other boy, and then got up, trying not to let show that he was actually quite shaken, and turned around, staring off into the Weyrbowl.
The fact that what he was thinking might be true-even the fact that this other boy was acknowledging his own thoughts in the question he had just so brazenly asked-had several effects on Xyrion. One was that he felt confused. The other, defensive. Yet another was a curiosity, about his parents. About this boy, whomever he might be to him. Did it matter, though? Why should it change anything? Though wouldn't it in fact, change everything? He was so confused, and didn't like it in the least. Until now, he'd known where he stood in the world. He was a loner, it was true, but he was okay with that. Letting another person in? Wasn't something he did easily. Not even something he liked to do at all. Now this guy was already asking him a personal question. He wanted to think that it was none of this guy's business. But wasn't it, if what they were thinking was true, was? He really, really need to be someplace else. Someplace he could think. This was too much to handle right now. And so he took off running.
Xyrion ran like he'd never run before. Even as he passed Tikal and Khris, almost catching up to even Tieler and Raska. His lungs burned like nothing else, and he'd probably throw up when he was done. He kept on running.
Rhia was looking from one boy to the other, trying to figure out what was going on. It seemed like the boys had gotten the bands from the same place.
"Both of you..." She trailed off as the Xyrion took off running. "Woah wait a minute! I'm not done with you. You stay here!" She told Kiran and sprinted after the fleeing candidate. She caught up to him easily and grabbed him by the back of his shirt. "Wait a minute there lad. I was not done with you. You will come back with me now and we are going to settle this. I will not have this disrupting my classes again." She made him slow and stop and waited for him to catch his breath before turning him around and giving him a little nudge in the other direction, back towards Kiran.
Xyrion was taken by surprise as he was suddenly yanked backwards by some unknown force-which turned out to be the Candidatemaster herself. He had no idea why she'd done that-weren't they through? He'd apologized, gotten his so-called punishments, and wanted to not have to carry on with this any longer today. He heard her words, and a feeling he couldn't quite explain welled up in his chest. He looked her squarely in the eyes, his own blue-grey eyes stormy. He said back slowly, "I have no intentions of disrupting your classes any longer, Candidatemaster. I also have no intentions of going back there and dealing with this right now. I need time to think, and forcing me to go back there won't solve anything."
He wondered if he'd just gotten himself into more trouble with this, but he was finding it hard to guess what sort of character their CM was. He could not deal with the other boy, he was far to muddled and confused, and forcing him to do so would be like torture, almost, of a kind. If what he were thinking was in any way true, he did not want to deal with Kiran right now. He didn't want it to be true, and he needed time to think of how he would deal with it or react if it were. Did it matter if it were or weren't? That other boy was a stranger to him. Nothing more than any other person that was a fellow Candidate. What right did he even have to start questioning Xyrion as to 'what his parents looked like' Admin's Note:
Couldn't he tell you just didn't DO things like that, the way he had. Xyrion was feeling so uncomfortable, he wanted to just turn and run away again-even if he realized how fruitlessly immature it would be. But he couldn't deal with the multitude of feelings and the racing mind. He was a person who took each day as it came, and never showed much emotion. Nor did he feel emotions to the same extent as most others. He never really got angry, or cried, or any of that. He didn't see the point. Now he was angry, upset, confused...the list went on. He would not be forced into dealing with Kiran. This CM might punish him, but if she did she was unfair and unjust, in his mind.
He'd been wrong in attacking that other guy. That much he knew. His punishment was warrented. But this? This now was none of this woman's business, no matter who she was. If she had half the brains he'd already credited her with, she would put two and two together and figure what him-and that sharding Kiran-were already thinking. Question was, did she? Unfortunately, she was holding the Ace and he was holding the Joker. If she made him go back, he would not resist, because he had no choice. But if she wanted to force him to talk, to take that right from him? He'd rather be doing chores forever.
Xyrion was not even a stubborn person. Far from it. He just didn't like it when someone tried to force him into something he was this uncomfortable with. And it was very, very rare that he was uncomfortable with anything at all. So, what would be the outcome?
Kiran waited a moment after he asked the question. A moment later the excited curiosity across his face started to slip away. "Xyrion?" he asked again. Already he knew that something was wrong here. The other boy had mirrored his own stunned confusion perfectly, but now Kiran had moved on to the possibilities that the whole incident might entail. He was eager to find out more. Xyrion, on the other hand, looked half terrified. Yes of course the expression was masked to a certain degree, but it wasn't just the expression that made him pick up on that emotion. Where he'd been shouting angrily moments before, now he sat in utter silence. Kiran thought he looked like a wherry tensed up at the sight of some wild cat on the horizon.
Then, just like the frightened wherry, Xyrion whirled to his feet and bolted. Kiran stared after him, lifting his hand from the ground and sitting back on his legs once more. The Candidate Master took off after him shortly after, seemingly planning on dragging him back, but it was too late now. Whatever moment Kiran had been expecting to grab onto was gone. Even if this boy did know something about his past it was obvious that nothing was going to be revealed today. Dejected, Kiran got slowly to his feet. The same stretch of longing that he thought he'd left in his childhood weighed heavily in his chest.
"It's all right," he said quietly. The Candidate Master probably wouldn't have heard the comment from where she and Xyrion stood. Kiran stepped forward to close the distance between them. He lifted his voice a bit when he spoke again so they would hear him. "It's all right," he repeated. "Just let him go." He continued walking at the easy pace as he spoke. "It's likely a misunderstanding. No use now in drawing anything out further." He paused for a moment when he neared them. He gave a weak smile and a small nod. "Candidate Master Rhia, I'll continue with the training now." Without another word Kiran turned in the direction the other candidates were running and continued the run at an easy but efficient pace.
A misunderstanding. Jilstherakiran told himself that was true. He tried desperately to believe it. Whatever hope he had in finding out some sliver of his past from this boy was surely false. When he was younger his parents had helped him to accept that they were the only family he'd have - aside from a wife and children, should he find himself on such a path. It'd been hard to deal with at that age. To know that he had another mother and father in the world was exciting; to have no answers on where they were was horrid. If he'd been told they were dead, had been shown their graves, it might be different. It was the not knowing that had been the worst. Now it seemed he'd have to teach himself how to do that all over again.
Rhia heard the comments from the other boy and gritted her teeth in frustration as he just ran off to join the other Candidates. "Next time wait for my instructions." She yelled after the boy. She had Mneith relay the message to the boy mentally. It probably scared him witless but he would have to get used to it if he became a Rider.
She turned back to Xyrion and sighed. She didn't want to have to deal with something like this on the first formal day of Candidate classes but it wasn't something she could just let drop. Things like this just tended to snowball until they blew up and she couldn't afford for that to happen so close to Kaith's mating flight and the hustle and bustle that accompanied that event.
Rhia loooked at the boy with compassion in her face. A revelation like this was hard to deal with. She had dealt with similar hard blows in her life but at least this one could be seen as a happy one, finding out you had family rather than finding out that you had lost all of yours."Sooner or later you are going to have to become an adult, boy and you will find that adults can't just run away to think through their problems. They have to deal with them right then and there. If you want to have any chance at Impressing a dragon you are going to have to march back over there and deal with this problem. Otherwise I might have to tell the Weyrwoman that you are not mature enough to deal with a dragonet. Dragonets don't wait for later and caring for one and the responsibilities that come with them will not be easy. I will give you a few moments to make your decision but it will be to either walk back and talk to Kiran or march back to the barracks and gather your things. I may sound like a hard taskmaster but this is training for the real world here. Dragons and Thread are not things that will wait for any man or woman and we need to learn how to deal with the here and now and not wait until later. Running away won't make the problem go away. It will make you that much more tempted to run away again and again in the hopes that it will solve itself."
Rhia wasn't really sure that she would send the boy home but she needed to get through to him about the gravity of the situation. Finding out about a potential family member wasn't all that life endangering but it would be good practice for the future. He needed to realize that he couldn't always run away and take the time to figure out how to solve a problem. Once a person left childhood that was a luxury that could be ill afforded, especially when the safety of Pern rested on your shoulders. She would certainly talk to the WW about what needed to be done with this crop of Candidates but she wasn't quite sure if she was ready to go through with her threat to send the lad home. He seemed promising but it was really up to the dragonet. What if she sent him home and his dragonet was waiting for him in this clutch and he wasn't there? It would be her fault the dragonet went *between* or didn't hatch out of its egg. Could she handle that? She let out an inward sigh. She would have to. It was up to her to make the decisions that would affect these young people and their future bonded dragons. She would just have to make sure that this didn't boil over and threaten the progress of the other students. She glanced at the other Candidates and sighed. They were all waiting to see what would happen. She could see their backward glances and read the curiosity in their eyes as Kiran joined them in their laps. She sighed. "Very well."
"I will make you deal with this. I suppose it wouldn't do for me to make you talk this out in front of your fellow Candidates. What I will do, however, is make you finish your laps. I will then meet with both of you in my office tomorrow morning before your classes. That means you will have to be up a candlemark before dawn because your classes start at sunup. I won't make you pack your bags but count this as your first warning Candidate. Displays like that are signs of immaturity and you are going to have to grow up fast. Threadfall is imminent and we can't play around anymore. I'll tell you a story. There was a young girl, a runner healer and breeder who lived with her parents and brothers in a hold not far from here. One day she left to deliver some medicine to a nearby hold. When she came back her family had been struck by plague and killed. Her Hold was smoldering to help prevent the plague. She left with the few belongings that hadn't been burned and the runner her Lord Holder had let her keep and headed out. She made it to Dark Moon Weyr and started a new life for herself. When life throws you curves you have to learn how to deal with them. That girl didn't want to deal with losing her family but she had to. Look at it this way, at least you are still alive and healthy and are gaining something rather than losing it. Maybe that will help you come to terms with this. That girl had to grow up in a hurry. You have the luxury of having a little more time but that won't always be the case. You might as well learn how to deal with that sort of thing now."
By this time the other Candidates were making the loop of the Weyr Bowl. "You will catch up the other lap later on today." She told him as the others passed them. She started jogging. "Start running." She drifted to where Kiran was running. "You will meet me in my office an hour before sunup tomorrow morning. Be prompt."
