S'kel stood up. "I object to this topic. Making preparations? Why should we be making preparations. All of us know that Threadfall is many years away. Surely none of us will be alive by then. I know I won't so I don't have to worry about that." His entire demeanor was surly and it was obvious that he was not going to give the Dark Moon leaders an easy time.

Falnor glared at S'kel. "You know that Thread is coming. we all know. You can't ingor the signs that our ancestors told us that Thread was coming. We need to prepare. thread might be coming withen the next three Turns. If you aren't prepared then, your Weyr won't surive." the Benden Weyrwoman said sternly. She disliked that Weyrleader. He knew that Thread was coming, he just didn't want to admit it.

"I agree with Falnor." L'mis stated as he too stood up. "One cannot deny that the red star is indeed getting dangerously close to Pern. We have made mistakes with Thread's pattern before, and it is apparently happening once again. Now, S'kel, you can complain about it, and deny it if you wish, but we have to do something about it. Even if we all die off before thread hits we have a duty to our weyr to protect it and Pern, including future generations. And if we fail to provide securities against thread we can be placing our future generations in great trouble with many difficulties." The bronzerider explained before nobly sitting back down.

Br'tan nodded approvingly. "They are both right. There is no doubt that Thread is approaching and it is better to be safe than sorry."
--
Hathea scolded. She slammed her hands on the table and stood. "It has not been nearly long enough for us to even consider Thread's arriving. Why should we make a huge fuss in a W- make a huge fuss over nothing but speculation?"
--
D'nyr twiddled his thumbs beside her. He wasn't much the talker unless it was so Hathea didn't go flirting.

S'kel glanced at Hathea when she spoke. He was annoyed at her manner, but he was glad that someone here was of the same mind as he was. "So you say."
Tela stood. "Why should we bother to worry about training for Thread when our Weyrs barely have enough tithes to feed our people because the people of Pern believe that Thread is gone. Why waste energy on some ridiculous story about Thread returning?" She sat back down with the air of a Lady Holder sitting in her hall.

A glance was given to Tela, "Waste energy? If thread is truly returning you are not wasting your energy to train to keep the land alive and the holds will tithe better for they will see our worth to them. And if thread doesn't come like you seem to believe so fervently you get to say I told you so....but other then having trained Dragon riders what would be so terrible about getting ready for thread?" N'ryd would sit back after those words to see what impact they might have made.

Hathea looked at N'ryd. "She is right. Our food will go faster if we are working our riders more. that is a simple fact. It is hard for us to survive on what we have with what we're doing. Besides, Thread will probably not return within our lifetimes so if our riders train it will be in vain. What good will that do?" She sat back in her chair and D'nyr simply sat quietly. Hathea rolled her eyes- she could not wait until her Gold flew again.

R'kim stood up. "In vain? Are you meaning to tell me training our dragon riders to be prepared for the worst is in vain? Anyone who believes this is blind. Your weyr will be no more if you so carelessly disregard this. I, for one, am making preparations. Threadfall isn't something to take lightly. Your ignorance in this could cost many lives. Are you willing to risk that?", He responded to Hathea but projected what he was saying to everyone there.
Kadire smiled and nodded in agreement to what he said.

He now focused on Hathea, "So if you are right and it doesn't come in our lifetime what will your weyr do when you and all of our generation is gone? With no one to teach them are they to suddenly, from no where, know how to fight thread? I was under the impression that no one is born knowing the pattern and times of thread. With no one to teach them your weyr will be mowed down by the thread. Is that really what you want?" He shook his head and took a breath trying to calm down. It could be easily deduced that he was worried about the thread and that some would die over it if something wasn't done now to prepare.

Christae looked at the pair of Istan leaders with distaste as she stood to speak. "I cannot believe you would be so callous as to deny your riders the right they have to learn how to fight Thread. They deserve to know that Threadfall is imminent and that they must learn how to preapare. N'ryd is right, even if this is a false alarm, our riders need to be taught Threadfighting techniques. Even if Thread does not fall during ourl lifetime, we need to train our future generations in Threadfighting techniques so that when it does come our riders and future generations will be preapared."
She clenched her teeth and sat down as another spasm of pain hit her. She closed her eyes for a moment and then focused again on the meeting. "Would you deny your riders the right to knowledge that will protect themselves and Pern's future?" She watched them, her annoyance at the pair plain on her face.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ S'kel glared at the people who had shot down his protest. Grudgingly, he consented. "Very well, we will begin training, if only to keep you quiet. You will see when you are proved wrong."
Tela let out a "Humph," and sat back down. "I can see that it is not worth arguing with you because you are determined that you are right and we are wrong. Wait until your weyr cannot feed itself because your riders are expending their energy trying to prepare for imaginary Threadfall."
Hathea sank into her chair. She crossed her arm and let out a sigh. "Fine, fine," she said, rolling her hand.
D'nyr looked at her and sighed- happy it was over.
--
Br'tan was also relieved.
Lezay was content to keep quiet while this first small debate occurred. Obviously, Igen never stopped training its new riders for Threadfall. Why lose such a skill because of the notion that Thread would not return in their own lifetime? It wasn't only about the next thirty or so Turns.
T'sor for once, was also quiet. He would have said something to support their opinion, but if the others agreed than he would not add fuel to the debate.
"Well I'm glad that that was easily solved." He stated in an amused tone. "No one's going to starve, either. It's not as if a few extra drills a day will kill off the herdbeasts."
Christae looked up at T'sor. "Perhaps for your weyr it might not, but our weyr is small. The holds that tithe to us have been rather stingy on their tithes lately. When we confront them, they either show us records that more supplies had been sent than we claim or say that we don't deserve to be fed and allowed to laze. We aren't earning their keep, according to several holds. They say that Thread is gone and will not be coming back. Some go so far as to claim that Thread was just a myth told by dragonriders to get the people to feed them. Why else would the holders have to remain inside while the supposed menace fell? We all know that this is not true. We have seen the Threadscore on older riders who are no longer with us, but the holders refuse to believe us. Our weyr is not the only one with this problem. We have foraged for ourselves but the crop that we find in the wild is not enough to sustain even our small weyr."
Br'tan nodded. "It may be that we have more trust that we are not dwindling too much but I have noticed the change. We too could use more tithes." He leaned back in his chair and looked at Falnor, then the others.
T'sor nodded in what could be called understanding. If one were to look back in old records, Holds had challenged the Weyrs before. However, it was not something that they had had to deal with of late. Igen was lucky, for the most part.
"I know that it is harder for you, Weyrwoman Christae, and the fact that Dark Moon is the newest Weyr does not help your case. We have to hold out until Thread does started to fall again. If the Holders want proof, we can give it to them." He glanced at Lezay, who only nodded, before looking to the others to see their response.
Falnor smiled. "I agree with you T'sor. But we are not going to let Thread fall on their holds. We will protect them, and then they will know that they will have to tithe to us." The Benden Weyrwoman grinned and rolled her shoulders. That one was quick.
Miya sat back in her chair, listening to each and every point of the argument, or debate, or descussion. It didn't really matter what it was called. She knew thread existed, there were way too many records and documents on threadfall for it too not to exist. Yes, she had wandered into the restricted parts of the weyr many times, but she was curious, and often bored. Even now that she had Reinath, she still often got bored for the queen was a lazy lump of golden hide.
I am not lazy. The gold defended herself.
~Whatever.~ Miya replied.
Reinath snorted angrily, getting tired of being picked on by her sarcastic. The gold stood up, glaring at her rider, eyes whirling red with anger. It's not nothing. I am not like your pathetic firelizards. I am a gold, regal and powerful. Reinath bellowed.
~What is your problem.~ Miya snapped. ~Relax. I never thought of you like those annoying unwanted flitts. You actually have comman sense. You actually have a brain, and you are the one I want.~ Miya said angrily, mad at the queen yet complimenting her at the same time.
Reinath was not satisfied. She walked over to the corner and curled up, fuming, yet knowing better then to leave.
Miya slumped back in her chair as she tried her best to continue listening to the conversation, but was also enraged at the arrogent gold.
******************************
L'mis sighed as the argument over training weyrlings had finished. His attention turned over to the soon to be Jr. Weyrwoman and soon to be Jr. Queen. The two were very angry. He was worried, wondering if the queen truly had chosen the right bonded.
Has a hatchling ever chosen wrong? Peth questioned his mine. They are simply a young, prideful pair. Many gold weyrlings are like that.
~Were Gelia and Nysaith like that?~ L'mis wondered.
I am sure they were. Peth replied and that was enough to satisfy the bronze rider.
Kia shifted her weight from one foot to the other. Something pressed at her side almost to the point of making her fall. "Kylath," she whispered, pushing the dragon's nose backwards. "Nike, when are we to come in?"
Inside Hathea shifted uncomfortably in her seat. Mine, you are troubled? The dragon, Isith, was not one to care for most but she gave plenty (and sometimes more than wanted) to Hathea. ~First this little Weyr has the nerve to hold the meeting here. Then they cannot keep control of their Weyrlings. Now they are saying foolish things. Thread will not be back so soon. Shard them!~ Mine, you are lucky only I can here this.
Hatath, who sunbathed beside Isith, noticed her change in position and figured she spoke to her bonded. He felt he would check up on things. Hatath was nothing like the general Bronze. He pretty much followed unless it came to being a Wingleader. He was like a whole other dragon then. Then he had another mood chabge. When he spoke with his bonded he was almost cocky. Mine, how has it been going? ~Oh- it's just one huge argument. I have heard rmors of mutations here. Have you seen any?~ Not I. His hide's color seemed to ripple in the bright sun. It seemed like Bronze but covered with mud so it was slightly broqn. In fact, he had been mistaked for a Brown when he hatched.
Across the table Br'tan sat up. They needed to make it clear. Thread was likely coming and even if it was not they needed to at least train a little more then they did. The Riders barely received any actual training- mostly shores. ~Ituith,~ he said, reaching to the Bronze's mind, ~Do you have any opinion. I know you have some advice or something.~ Br'tan's voice held a bit of smugness to it. No, Mine, I don't have input. The brightly colored Bronze snorted a bit with disaproval.
"When Thread falls, I am sure that the holders will be scrambling to tithe to us, but what are we to do until then? Dark Moon's supplies are low. We are not the only Weyr either. We need a plan of action to get the holders to believe that Thread is going to fall. Perhaps we should ask the Harpers to dig up the old records of Thread so that we can show the holders. We could bring them to the Eye and Finger rocks and get them to look. They can see that the Red Star is growing brighter every passing day. Perhaps if we show them that Threadfall is immenent it might be better. We won't be able to convince all of them but perhaps the few we do convince can make a difference. I am certain that if we call on them the Harpers will help. They always have before. We need to plan. We need to find ways to make people clear the greenry from their hold vicinity and we need to find more food for the Weyrs until Thread falls and the tithes begin again." Christae's voice was earnest.
"D'ran," whispered Kia quietly to Nike and the two dragons. Kylath nodded and continued to watch, her eyes swirling gently.
--
Br'tan nodded. "I'm sure we can prove it to them... somehow," he said. Slowly his voice drifted across the room.
