Kira watched on as more eggs hatched. She had to admit that these little dragonets were cute. She could hardly believe they'd grow up to be as big as any of the adult dragons she had seen around the weyr. She could hear some murmerings amongst the candidates, but she ignored it for the better part. She was too intent on looking over each dragonet and wondering if any would choose her. Her mind wondered over each possibility of every color present. Some might be more impossible to others, but that didn't discourage her.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
G'han landed yet again and let yet another group of people off his dragon. G'han noticed the winds were picking up again, with the rain being thrown about to it's whim. G'han decided to give Gerenanth a rest. It wouldn't do to make another attempt and be thrown about in the wind. "Gerenanth. We're giving it a rest", G'han said authoritatively to his bronze. Gerenanth always hated when he took such a tone with him, but looking at G'han it was no use. He knew G'han's mind was filled with worry about the dragon. Gerenanth complied and made his way to perch with some of the other dragons, watching the hatching. He found his place near Ebbeth.
When Gerenanth was clear out of sight, G'han mentally nudged his blue flitt. Azure popped over and onto his shoulder, curling his tail around G'han's neck. It was a sign that the blue flitt was nervous. Azure would usually only make such a move when he was nervous or anxious. G'han scratched the flitt's head and made his way to the stands to watch.
The next dragonet to hatch was another green. It was closer to the edge of the sands in a small group of eggs that had wound up on the outer edge of the clutch. One of the eggs nearby was large, almost big enough to hold a gold but it was not the typical gold color. Another one farther up was small, the smallest egg on the sands. They were in the most danger of the rising water.
The egg was rocking violently and paused for a few moments before it completely broke apart from the force of the occupant's struggle. It was as if the inhabitant had paused to gather her strength before breaking open the rest of the egg. The green that emerged from the egg was a beauty, a flashy colored dragon that would obviously be outgoing. Her hide was the color of a bright peridot with emerald green wingtips and neck ridges. Her hide was dappled with sunburst patterns of a lighter yellow green than her peridot hide, and almost imperceptable on her hide. She was graceful, and rather showy as she seemed to prance across the sands to find her lifemate.
The pretty little blue was drawing speculation from the crowd. Although Dark Moon had seen one female blue in its lifetime, most people assumed that blues were males. This one was just too pretty to be a male though, and she seemed to be circling around the female Candidates instead of the males. It was not unheard of for a blue to go for a girl, Ebbeth had gone for Akki so many Turns ago but it was still somewhat rare. This little blue was a girl though and she was about as pretty and graceful as a girl could be.
She circled the Candidates one more time before she stopped in front of Calnia and sat daintily on her little rump. She had wanted to make sure that she was the right one. Calnia, you left your Jemnith waiting for so long. Will you please feed me now? I am so hungry and have waited for you for so long! I forgive you though. You didn't know I was waiting for you.
The copper decided she had dallied enough and stopped pacing in front of the shards of her egg and walked to the girl she had chosen. Her rosy hide shimmered as she walked. She butted her rider with her head to get her attention away from the people in the stands that she was watching. Kiramine please pay attention to your Ayerith. Please feed me.
Kira had actually turned to glace over the stands of people that were beginning to flood in. Her attention was momentarily taken away from the dragonets with some form of concern for her family. However, an unexpected nudge jolted her out of it as she turned to see this gorgeous copper dragonet before her.
Kiramine please pay attention to your Ayerith. Please feed me. Kira looked at her dragonet, the copper looked right back at her. She smirked as she nodded to the dragonet that was now bonded to her. She hadn't expected this, but it felt so nice. It was a different kind of feeling than she'd ever felt. It was as if a piece of her had been completed, filled in.
She left the stands and made her way to where everyone was feeding their dragonets. The orders were clear enough to her. Take the freshly cut meat and make sure the dragonet chews it thoroughly and properly before swallowing, no haste needed. Kira couldn't help but smile inwardly, as if she were taking care of her own child. No, but the relationship was so much more different than that. She'd only just impressed, but she felt it. It was as if it were as natural as any instinct people were born with. She nodded thoughts aside for now. And what joy! Just in time to notice a couple of boys already present. A couple of boys with bronzes no less. This would be fun.
She took the necessary scraps of meat to feed Ayerith, and sat near to the two boys.. The first she all too quickly gobbled down. Ayerith. Not so fast! She quickly scolded. But Kiramine, I am so hungry! The dragonet complained back. Well the food's not going anywhere. Slow down, or else you'll make a mess of things. You could bite my hand off. Would you want to hurt me? Or you could choke. Do you want to hurt yourself? Kira was quick to explain and manipulate feelings and words to get the copper to submit. It wasn't her usual manipulating either. It was, oddly, in the form of care, compassion. She didn't want to see her dragonet hurt. Ayerith complied grudgingly and the next piece of meat was chewed, though not as thorougly, and swallowed.
Here. You seem to be having trouble knowing when it's been enough time to chew. Count like this. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, and ten. Each chew and then swallow when you're done. Oh she even had her poor copper counting chews before swallowing. If she kept that up, it'd be a habit that would stick with Ayerith. Which was actually fine with Kira. That would ensure she properly chewed her food. The next piece of meat given to Ayerith was actually done properly. The copper counted chews then swallowed. Such a needy little thing, Kira couldn't help but bubble up inside between excitement and how cute she thought this was.
Her mission a success, she turned to glance at the two boys. "Those are some fine bronzes you impressed", she spoke sweetly and smiled pleasantly, adjusting herself just so. Harmless conversation shouldn't deviate much from keeping Ayerith nice and fed. A compliment never hurt to stir up conversation either.
Sorcha sat in the Sands, interested in everything going on. She had heard the Weyrwoman, but that certainly didn't mean her, did it? Little blues and greens were the ferrymen of the Weyr. On top of that this was the first Hatching she was going to watch. The one that had yielded the Moonstreak being a depressing affair for Sorcha. She clapped and ooh'ed with the rest of them when a bronze popped forth. The rest happened in a blur it was hard to tell the order of hatching. She'd be watching one shake just to see another dragonet walking around. Despite herself Sorcha was soon grinning to see so many dragonets being born and starting a life with the hopeful Candidates.
~~~~~~~~
It was finally here! The day of Hatching. Well, kinda day, when it was so rainy you kinda forgot what time of day it was. It looked like evening all day. Once he'd heard he was running towards the Sands. All those lessons the Candidate Master had tried to teach him gone. It wasn't until he'd almost passed a drudge handing out robes that he remembered he needed to wear one. He grabbed one with a quick thanks and glanced around before trying to be with the rest of the Candidates while resisting the impulse to just run up to the eggs and hatching dragonets. He just wanted to pet them all, they were so cute! He ended up just swaying his weight from foot to foot, barely restraining his bouncing.
~~~~~~~~~
K'nest's head raised as he listened to Temesth. Apparently the Hatching was now? What an awful night. Not like they could do anything about it now. He sighed and put down the scroll he'd be reading and grabbed his riding gear. Apparently they had to get some family members to the hatching while the storm took a break. Thankless task that. Many Lords thinking they were too special to get wet or that he was late and lazy.
With another sigh K'nest hopped atop his blue to play the ferryman. He'd glance inside with regret as the first few dragonets started emerging from their shells. He was grateful when he'd finally gotten the people on his list before too many Impressions and Hatchings were done. He belatedly clapped for the few who Impressed before making his way to his seat. He frowned when he noticed the water lvls. Too much more and those eggs ... the Queen could move them right? He sure hoped so, but in the excitement someone might miss an egg or two. At least none had Betweened yet.
~~~~~~~~
No way she was going to just sit out here when the Sands were warmer than the little tunnel connected to it. She'd just sit in the Sands. Yes, she'd have to watch the Impressions and this whole...thing. But at least it was better than listening to the wind and rain pour down. She sniff and watched as a few eggs hatched before watching the reactions of all the others. Really not that big a deal ...
She watched some of the prettier eggs, while half heartedly listening to the other drudge's chatter of who might Impress what. Or what they'd Impress if they were still young enough. She snorted, if they didn't Impress earlier they weren't doing it now. If they weren't all dimglow's she'd might consider it, but it wasn't worth her intellect to be bonded to one of those things.
She smiled, at least after this came a holiday of sorts and feast. Be dry and warm then for sure. Plus, the harpers would be out in force, good for a riddle or two. She glanced up at a particularly loud applause. Apparently a copper dragonet had Impressed, she faked a smile and clapped with the rest before falling back to her musings.

There were so many dragonets hatching now, Marletta did not know where to look. She’d turn her attention to one hatching and miss another one completely. From what she could see there were two blues, a lovely copper, and a green out on the sands, probably more that she missed. As both the female blue and copper impressed other girls Marletta frowned. There were less unhatched eggs every moment did one of those contain her lifemate? Still she clapped for those who impressed the marvelous dragonets and anxiously waited to see if one of them would choose her.
--- Sh’rel made it back to the Weyr shortly before the storm began to pick up again. He hopped off and helped his passengers off Rolaranth before the brown made it safely back to his weyr ledge. Once Sh’rel was sure Rolaranth was safe he helped his passengers to the stands before taking a seat again. The robin’s egg blue dragon had just impressed and he smiled and clapped loudly for the impression.

Calnia, you left your Jemnith waiting for so long. Will you please feed me now? I am so hungry and have waited for you for so long! I forgive you though. You didn't know I was waiting for you.
Calnia had seen the blue walking around but had lost sight of her. She gasped at the voice in her mind. Was this what it felt like to have a voice inside your head? But.... Weren't riders the ones able to hear their own lifemates? Calnia looked down and could not speak for a long moment. As the realization set in, Calnia dropped to her knees and hugged the little blue dragonet. Her dragonet, her lifemate. Her Jemnith! Tears streamed down her cheeks.
Calnia stood back up quickly, her hand never leaving her lifemate's warm hide. She looked about quickly and could see where the other new Weyrlings were heading as they impressed. "Come, Jemnith. This way. The food is this way." She waited a moment to make sure her lifemate was walking beside her. She could feel wave after wave of love and acceptance coming from her little blue Jemnith. She had never experienced love from anyone, so she was a little scared of it. If it was coming from her lifemate, she'd welcome it without question.

Leander wasn’t growing impatient, his thoughts always keeping him amused. When a Copper impressed out, as well as a Blue, he glanced at each girl in turn. Then he looked back to the sands, seeing only a Brown, Blue’s, and Green’s... Brown was the highest of all those colors; this is the one he’d focus on for now. Too bad you can’t just stuff their mouths like flitts and have them choose you out of gluttony, he thought. The Minty Green dragonet was pretty, he noted, but not his. The stormy Blue was also a nice-looking dragon but again it wasn’t the one he hoped would come along and choose him, same went for the other more peculiar Blue. As for the second female Green that’d hatched he knew for certain that it wouldn’t choose him, same went for the more recent Green... He watched as the Green pranced about in search of its bonded, it appearing quite strong willed in his opinion. The peculiar Blue was taking the longest to choose, and Leander bet that it couldn’t find a single soul to match it. He sniffed, fixing his bangs while attempting to maintain focus on the Brown. He never had a good attention span unless his attention was going out to a girl; then he’d put his whole heart and soul in to her. Many were concerned, likely, as to whether or not Leander had a heart with the way he flittered about. When Tanwen made her justified remark Leander looked over at her, recognizing her voice from just about anywhere. “I always knew we had a love hate relationship, I just didn’t think it was going to be this strong,” he replied, nodding at her.
~ ~ ~
Tieler couldn’t believe how many dragonets had already impressed, and all of them were overlooking her... Maybe she just wasn’t going to impress at all, maybe she wasn’t good enough. Perhaps these dragonets knew what she’d done, who she was, and they all thought it would be unthinkable to have her as a partner. She looked down, trying to hide her misery. She didn’t want others thinking she actually wanted one of these beasts-though she did. She was feeling quite alone at this moment, one could even say she was beginning to build even more walls around her already existing ones. It was at that moment that Alias came from /between/ to creel at her bonded, landing on the girl’s shoulder comfortingly. Tieler jumped, the presence of her Moonstreak flitt having been unexpected. “Hey...” she spoke to her, her mouth turning up when Alias rubbed her small wedge-shaped head against Tieler’s cheek. “All right, all right, cut that out,” she blushed. Alias didn’t pay her any heed, continuing to comfort her in the way that she knew best.

Tanwen stared at Leander with a mildly disbelieving look when he replied. The hatching distracted her then. The gorgeous little blue impressed to someone, followed by the copper. Another green hatched out; that one looked like it'd shine in just about any light. When it was quiet for another moment and all there was were dragons walking about and searching, she turned to reply to Leander. "I wouldn't use the word 'relationship' to describe anything between us." She turned back to the eggs. "It's just gotten really difficult to be rid of you."
- - -
Khris glanced briefly to each impression as it occurred. Each new voice was enough to distract him for a moment, but he turned away just as quickly when he saw the dragon with another candidate, giving them a 'congratulations' if they were close enough to hear. But the distraction was only because, standing in a hatching as he was, any of these voices could be speaking to him. He imagined it would feel different if a dragon chose him and then spoke...but he had no idea if it would or not. Impression was supposed to be so amazing, he imagined the speech would feel different.
He heard a small creel and turned to his left, catching sight of the small moonstreak flit landing on Tieler's shoulder. Khris had noticed during the hatching that she'd taken on a more and more uneasy stance with each impression, and the flitt's appearance - obviously trying to comfort her - made it obvious that she was feeling insecure about the whole situation. "See?" he spoke up, offering her a lospided grin as he did so. "Even your flitt thinks you'll do ok. There's still eggs on the sand, and hatchlings. And hey! Even if you don't impress that doesn't mean you're no good for one."
He rolled his shoulders in a sort of half shrug and turned to look back at the unhatched eggs. "It just means the one that wants you isn't here." As he spoke he caught sight of the two eggs near where the latest green had hatched out. Something gave him an uneasy prickle at the back of his neck, and he looked towards the entrance of the sands. Khris' eyes widened a bit at the sight of the water splashing in, and he looked back to where the eggs were positioned. "Yikes," he said, still to Tieler. His words had taken on a far more uneasy tone than when he'd been comforting her a moment earlier. "I hope those two hatch out soon, they don't look like they're in a good spot if that water gets closer..."

It was apparent Azaranth had eaten his fill, after he stopped taking pieces of meat in favor of simply sitting there, licking his muzzle clean and listening to J'kiran's explanation though X'ion could tell that the bronze was still quite confused. X'ion snorted derisively, and then said cooly, when J'kiran was done, "some of us don't want answers because we feel we're better off not knowing something that will change everything."
Through his comment, he didn't realize he'd just practically admitted that there was something between him and J'kiran. He was getting more confused feelings from Azaranth, and it was making him slightly uncomfortable. Then, he realized that he didn't have to say anything aloud, for anyone but Azaranth to hear. He was pretty sure J'kiran would explain matters to Kaenith later too. So there wasn't a problem with him sharing it with his own bronze. ~J'kiran is probably my brother, Azaranth,~ he began, and then, ~but I grew up thinking I was an only child, and my parents gave me to be fostered, and then disappeared. I don't want to know if they kept J'kiran and fostered me. I don't want to have someone other than you that I feel I have to talk to or be close to. I liked being alone, and I like having just you and me. I don't need anyone else.~
Azaranth heard, and Azaranth didn't understand. *If he is your brother, like Kaenith is my brother, maybe he does not want to be alone,* the dragonet sent, and then, *he does not seem happy. He is my clutchbrother's bonded. I do not like that he is not happy, then Kaenith may be unhappy.*
The words of maturity coming from the newly hatched dragonet made X'ion cringe a bit inwardly. So far, he hadn't cared what J'kiran felt about the matter. The other boy seemed to have been excited, for whatever reason, at the thought that they were brothers. Besides, what had he meant by 'wanting answers' Admin's Note:
Answers to what, exactly? He hadn't considered that maybe J'kiran had been fostered out too, and maybe thought that he hadn't. The main reason was that he didn't want someone he didn't even know involved in his life. He was a private person by nature and he wasn't liking being almost forced to deal with J'kiran just because they suddenly found out that they could be related.
*But you are perhaps brothers, X'ionmine. Is that not important?*
X'ion didn't know if it was important. Brothers were family, and were supposed to be closer than friends, even. J'kiran didn't seem like a bad guy. He wasn't at all pushy, rude, conceited...and he didn't seem like the sort to lie or steal. So if they were brothers...would that be so bad? For the first time, he paused to question this. He had a dragon now-he couldn't spend all his time alone, hiding in his room whenever he didn't have lessons with the Weyrlingmaster. He would have to deal with people. He'd be expected to, he'd gotten a bronze. The realization hit him like a ton of stones, and he glanced over at J'kiran and frowned. It might be better to have a friend who was your brother and seemed a decent person, rather than to have a friend who was something like Zuhayr or Leander. They were too outgoing and showy, and he would have been incredibly uncomfortable with either. He didn't realize he'd fixated his gaze stonily on the other boy, and then, "if you find out we are brothers, what do you want from me?"
It was totally the type of question anyone would expect from the stoic X'ion, straight to the point and somewhat demanding in nature. However, he just wanted to find out more about what J'kiran wanted to know. Maybe it would sate his own questions about the other-for he did admittedly have a couple.
~~~~~~
R'yo had heard R'xis' congratulations from the stands, and had looked up and smiled at his friend, grinning from ear to ear. He'd impressed a brown, just like his friend had. He had wanted a brown, for they made him feel more at ease. His was really big, and that was why the dragonet had nearly scared him out of his robes, but now that he'd impressed he seemed to find it funny that he'd been scared of Resith at all! Resith, meanwhile? Was having his face shoved full of meat. He had to keep reminding him that he needed to not choke, brows furrowed in concern while he watched the dragonet eating.
*I won't choke, mine. My mouth is simply bigger than yours,* the dragonet told his bonded. Resith seemed a very serious and logical dragonet. However, he was very aware of himself, his surroundings, and everyone and everything going on in the sands. That's why the dragonet began to eat more quickly. That's why it kept looking down at the sands, his eyes whirling in multiple tones of confusion and worry.
"Resith? What's wrong?" Rhiyo asked, getting the feeling from his dragonet that he was hurrying eating and wanted off of the sands. Rhiyo looked down at his feet, but he couldn't see anything about the sand that was so interesting or worrysome.
*Beneath us, there is wet. It is coming more and more, and it makes me wish to go up where there are big dragons and people. R'yomine, there is something wrong! Take me up to the stands, please,* the dragonet said, a tone of almost fear in his mental thoughts.
R'yo didn't know what to do. Something was wrong but he couldn't see it. What did Resith mean, 'wet beneath us' Admin's Note:
He didn't know, but he hurriedly finished giving the dragonet a couple more chunks of meat, and then the pair went up into the stands.
R'yo picked his way along to where R'xis and Wolf were. The boy's face was a picture of worry, as he smiled half-heartedly at R'xis and then said, "something's wrong with Resith! He wanted to get off of the sands. He said that there was 'wet beneath us'. I don't know what was bothering him..." he gave Wolf a small smile, but his eyes were filled with concern.
Resith, meanwhile, was happy now that he was off the sands. He looked up at Ersith, and then over at Serinth, looking from one dragon to the other. Then he gave a contented rumble and plopped his head into his bonded's lap.
~~~~~~
Raska was getting annoyed. These dragonets were going to everyone but her and Tieler! What was wrong with them, that they ignored the best possible partners and kept impressing to wherries like that Rhiyo guy and that stupid girl who kept staring at every single dragonet like she was in love with it? Shards, this hatching was totally not going the way she'd thought. However, it was when she looked over at Tieler that she realized that her friend didn't look so happy. She heard Khris began speaking up, and then sidled on over and put an arm around the girl and said confidently, "hate to admit it, but he's right, you know. Just because ours aren't in here, doesn't mean that we're not gonna' impress. Just means ours our probably in the next batch. Besides, I don't know about you, but I haven't seen any that look good enough for you, anyhow." She gave her friend a pat on the back and a lopsided grin, saying, "at least you impressed one of those flitts, huh? I've got Kero, to boot. He's totally cooler than any of these dragons!"
She was personally a bit put off that all the dragons weren't coming to her, too. However, she had kind of remembered that not everyone impressed first time around. She could handle not impressing, because it just meant to her her dragon wasn't in this particular clutch. Could Tieler, though? Or would her friend take it as a sign of failure, like so many others did? Well, she'd just be sure that didn't happen! She glanced back at the dragon eggs remaining. There were a few, still...but what was-oh, shards. There was water beginning to come into the hatching sands all of a sudden, and there were two eggs further back, and still unhatched eggs! The water would be hot...they'd better hatch out soon.
~~~~~~
Tikal had been watching the water seep into the hatching sands, around the edges at first, but slowly it was beginning to rise so that it became visible. It wasn't exactly a threat since the hot sands were soaking it up. But anyone could see that the sands were beginning to change color from a white-gold to a darker brown. There were still eggs on the sands, and dragonets who hadn't impressed-the water kept on coming. Tikal looked at Kaith-did the golden queen realize what was happening? If that water actually flooded the scalding hot sands, it would be nothing short of mayhem. It was then he noted the two eggs furthest back-they were at risk, more than the others, of being swept away by any water that did rise. He looked under his feet...the sand was changing color there now, too! He shifted uncomfortably. His thoughts were suddenly away from impressing insofar as they had been, and he began to feel a sickening panic inside his stomach. The eggs, the dragonets-they would be killed if they didn't hurry and hatch! The two by the edge would be swept away-what if they were to drown?
Tikal could hardly stand there and just watch, but he had no choice. It was a race against the water, and the dragonets had best be quick about impressing and hatching. If they didn't...they'd be lost. The thought that maybe his dragonet was in one of the remaining eggs made his stomach turn. What if the only dragon that was meant for him was in there? What if it never made it out? He kept shifting from foot to foot, wishing there was something more he could do to help-even if his dragonet wasn't involved in it.
~~~~~~
Kaiya didn't notice the water seeping in until she looked down at her feet, feeling oddly like she had mud seeping up her sandals. She was closer to the edges than most, though closer up front-what was going on? It clicked, then. The hatching sands were flooding!
She tried to concentrate on the dragonets on the sands, but she noticed, too, that more eggs had yet to even hatch. Would they hatch and would the water stop coming in soon? Or would it keep coming in, and envelop the eggs, or maybe even the unimpressed dragonets? She looked at the greens on the sand, lastly the mint green, whom she'd been wondering why had been on the sands so long and not chosen. She frowned, and kept trying to concentrate on the dragonets, willing herself to not get too worked up. Maybe, just maybe, they'd all be fine...
~~~~~~
Kestrel was growing anxious. Her dragonet, where was it? She began to have doubts that it might be amongst those on the sands. So far, her favorites were the rainforest green, and that stormy blue, whom her eyes kept drifting back to interestedly. Blues were usually for boys, though. Just as she thought that, she felt what Kaiya had-the feeling of unsettling, kind of muddy-ish, sand. She looked down, and her eyes widened, as she quickly turned her head towards the entrance to the sands. "Oh shards...by the first egg, the sands are flooding!" she said, louder than she'd intended to. She found herself looking around for some reason, instinctively, for Hasima, in the stands. Could the spectators see from up there what was happening? She then looked over at J'kiran, who was standing talking to that other boy who'd impressed bronze at the same time. She bit her lower lip, as she looked back at the eggs unhatched, then the dragonets. The sands couldn't flood totally, could they? If they did, what did that mean for the dragonets and the eggs who hadn't hatched? She felt a sickening feeling of dread in her stomach, inching closer to the middle of the sands, nearer where she spotted Khris, away from the sand that now grew muddier. She looked at the stormy blue dragonet, then the rainforest, then back to the stormy blue. Would they impress soon? Would all of Kaith's clutch impress in time? It was a dreadfully sickening thought that they might drown, or never hatch at all...
~~~~~~
Up in the stands, it was far harder to tell what exactly went on below. J'red couldn't tell that the sands were flooding just yet, and nor could Hikanth, though the big bronze got a feeling of unease from some of the dragonets down below. He simply thought that it was because they were searching for their bondeds. Sometimes, when a dragonet didn't see their bonded at first, it got uneasy.
~~~~~~
Vyralth was so busy looking everywhere at once, he noticed before anyone else in the stands could see. The blue dragon gave a dismayed sort of bugle, and then sent to K'tan, *K'tan, there is water coming into the hatching sands, from the storm outside! If the dragonets do not impress, and the eggs do not hatch, they will be drowned by the waters!*
K'tan narrowed his eyes, trying to see what Vyralth was talking about. He looked to the entrance of the sands, then, and saw. What he saw was that the edges of the sands were turning a muddy brown, and that that muddy brown began to slowly seep into the sands, bit by bit. However, that bit by bit? Was getting faster! He looked up at Vyralth, and said miserably, "Vyralth, there's nothing we can do. If the dragonets don't impress, no one can force them to. The eggs? They can't be moved now that they're hatching. We have to hope that they all make it to their bonded's in time."
Vyralth sent feelings of misery and worry, but K'tan had spoke the truth. The pair continued to watch the hatching with new feelings of grimness at the prospect of how horribly wrong things might go for the remaining eggs and dragonets. Would they all make it in time, or would the storm kill off potential bonded's for the Candidates on the sands?
Rhia was busy trying to supply meat to the new Weyrlings and their dragonets as they came off the sands. At first she didn't notice that the brown dragonet and his chosen had left the edge of the sands where the Weyrlings were supposed to gather.
Some of the dragonets are getting agitated. So is Kaith.
I won't scold. I just need to make sure that he knows he is supposed to be here with the rest of the Weyrlings. Kaith does look a bit agitated. Can you tell what is wrong?
Water is rising.
I know but that shouldn't be enough to worry Kaith. We put sandbags at the entrance. Rhia glanced at the entrance of the cavern and her face paled. "Shells and shards! The water is coming into the Hatching Cavern! Mneith tell Kaith to warn Christae."
She knows.
The drudges and people around the Weyrlingmaster jumped. It had been Turns since they had last heard her curse, especially in front of the new Weyrlings. Some of them scurried away from her obvious agitation. The others looked to see what had caused her to lose her customary composure and gasped.
"The water!" A cry rose from some of the spectators at the edge of the sands.
Rhia hurried out onto the sands, close enough for her pupils to hear her. "Candidates, move farther away from the entrance. Try to lure the dragonets farther out. The water is rising and we have to get them away from the entrance!"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Kaith snaked her head back and forth, her hum becoming increasingly filled with worry at each passing moment. Her children needed to hurry! She reached out and nudged the little blue from his seat on his edge shards.
Go find your chosen. She crooned lovingly but with worry in her voice. Such was the trust she had in her bonded that she knew that once her children found their bondeds they would be safe from the rising water.
Christae had caught her dragon's worry and was biting her lip. She hoped that all of the dragonets would hatch out soon.
The little rainforest colored green had finally decided on which girl she wanted. She had no interest in the boys. She was too feminine for them anyway and they wouldn't love her and care for her hide as well as a girl would, or at least that's what the little green thought. She saw her mother nudge her blue brother and began to feel more alarmed in addition to being ravenously hungry.
Marletta! Marlettamine please protect your Issaeyith. I am afraid! Feed me please. She crowded against her Chosen's legs, almost knocking her down, as if the closer she was to her person the safer she would be.

Zuhayr leaned over slightly, hands on his hips as he stared at Tanwen with a large grin. “What about me and you then, eh? Do we have a relationship going on? Don’t say no though, otherwise you might ruin this magical hatching for me.” He looked away from the girl and clapped politely with another smile as a small blue found their bonded. He surveyed the other candidates, trying to gauge just how many were left when he saw Khris’s eyes open widely.
Curious, he followed the boys sight path and saw it too. Water was rising, the rain from the storm had now formed puddles and miniature rivers as they drew closer to the sand. And due to the sands heat, it only made sense that the water would begin to boil. Normally he wouldn’t be so alarmed by this, water did boil, but it was the fact that it was drawing nearer and nearer to some of the unhatched eggs, putting their shelled lives in danger. Zuhayr flapped his arms for a second before letting them drop, “Well that didn’t help any, I don’t know what I was expecting. Can’t we, like, coax them out of their eggs? Somebody make cooing sounds.”
He heard Rhia call out to them, and looked over at her before taking a few steps back. Would it work? If everyone moved back a bit, would the dragonets follow? Even that stubborn blue, who was still waiting for his bonded to come to him instead of the other way around? And what about the unhatched eggs? He tore his gaze away from the Candidate master just in time to see Marletta Impress. “Go Marletta!” Zuhayr whisper-shouted with a grin. It wasn’t exactly screaming her name from the other side of the Weyr like he promised, but it still worked.
---
“Congratulations Rhiyo…no, wait. It’s R’yo now, got it.” Akki said as she grinned at the boy when he headed towards Wolf in the stands. She raised an eyebrow slightly at the ‘Wet beneath us’ comment and squinted slightly at the sands. It was barely noticeable from where she was, but you could see the glint of the water as it ran between the sand. “Shards.” She whispered fiercely. Unlike Rhia, no one would be too surprised to hear the blue rider swear. A dirty habit, yes, but it was hard to kick it. There was nothing they could do really, it was too late now.
“Ebbeth, can’t you use your authorative voice and tell them to hurry up and find their bonded?” Akki mumbled under her breath as she watched Ebbeth and Rimith lean in closer to the hatching. Give me some credit. If that would work, I would have tried it a while ago.
---
Hasima let out a soft whimper as she gripped onto the blue riders arm even more tightly, before standing up. She watched as Kestrel turned towards the stands, and their eyes locked, wide eyes staring at each other as the possibilities of what could happen ran through their heads. Hasima was silently hoping that Kestrel would Impress, and before the water came any closer. It was a race against time, a race that had some of the deadliest outcomes yet. Perhaps the dragonets would notice the rising water and would feel the need to find their bonded, but the unhatched eggs…they had to hatch quickly or else they would be in danger.

Lure the dragonets in further? Just how to do that? Tikal wasn't at all sure, so he simply walked in further and closer up to the front, eyeing the eggs that had yet to hatch, and hoping that if the Candidates moved closer to the middle, the dragonets would, too. But what was going to happen to the eggs? No one could move those, the dragonets would have to hatch! He stood on the sands, feeling completely helpless, and wishing there was something he could do. Tikal was standing on one of the dryest spots on the sand he could find. If that didn't help, he didn't know what would...
~~~~~~
Kaiya was all too aware that the water was beginning to become visible around the edges of the hatching sands now. She saw the rainforest green impress, and murmered a congratulations to Marletta, before the call came to 'lure the dragonets away from the entrance'. Lure? You weren't supposed to really get the attention of the dragonets. She didn't know what Rhia had meant, but she decided that even at the risk of a mauling, she might be best off just doing whatever she could to get the dragonets to see that they were to get away from the entrance. She wasn't usually a rash person, she just did what she thought would work out right in the end.
Kaiya had been closer to the entrance than some. Now, she rushed forwards unexpectedly, waving her arms and calling out, "over here! The water is danger!" and ran straight at the dragonets who were closest to her-in this case the minty green and the brown-and just kept running, straight between the two, hoping that they'd get the picture. Once she was up nearby where it was safer, she stopped, and called, "here is safest! Come here!" She hoped the other Candidates would follow her near where Tikal had gone quickly, and that the dragonets might pick from amongst them in a much safter spot!
~~~~~~
Kestrel looked over at Kaiya wide-eyed. That was a brave move, what she was doing. Kestrel looked nervously at the dragonet closest to her-did she have the courage to tell the stormy blue and the other green to move? They weren't hers, wouldn't they get agitated? Did it matter? It was a life and death situation! Feeling nervous, she tried a more quiet but nonetheless what she considered effective approach. She kind of walked-jogged as close as she dared to the stormy blue and the peridot green, and said levelly but loudly enough to make her point, "go there, in the middle. It's not safe for you to be near the entrance, little ones!" She took a deep breath, and held out both arms wide, feeling like a living barricade-and one that would be next to zero effective against two dragonets. But, the Candidates were moving to the middle. She'd stand here until they got there, a firm look set on her face though her heart was racing. She had no wish to see any dragonet die while she was yet standing on these sands!

Tanwen had barely glanced over to Zuhayr's comment when the chaos broke lose. The command came to lure the dragonets away from the entrance, and after looking around quickly Tanwen caught sight of what Tikal was doing. She figured that it made sense to lure them to the dryer parts, and so stepped quickly in the same direction.
- - -
Khris looked between the dragonets and the entrance quickly, feeling his heartbeat quicken more, but not from excitement. The call came for them to lure the dragons away from the entrance, and he was immediately on board, trying to figure out where best to try and lead them. Tikal made the first move, followed by a shouting Kaiya. Kestrel followed after that. The spot they were going seemed dryer, so he figured he'd join in. He noticed that Kess was trying to barricade two dragonets on her own from the rising water, and he sprinted over to stand beside her.
"Just like they said, guys," he spoke, motioning with his hands for them to back up. "Away from the water, back over near the dryer sand." Of course that wouldn't help them at all if they didn't choose someone. After trying to lead them by walking towards them, he followed Kaiya's example and darted between the hatchlings. "See? Nice and dry," he said, bouncing for a moment on the balls of his feet. Come on, impress already! he mentally shouted, biting at his bottom lip for a moment and then looking over towards the few eggs near the edge. Khris felt his eyes widen again.
"If they don't hatch..." he started, looking down and tapping his fingers together, trying to come up with something quickly. Without another moment he burst off from the spot near Tikal and Kaiya, darting to where the few eggs were in the most danger. He knew better than to touch them when they were so close to hatching, and so instead he went for the sand in front of them. He kicked at it at first, then crouched and started pushing it up in some sort of attempt at a barrier. It was hot, of course, but he didn't much care at this point. The water that had started to soak into it helped keep the heat down a bit anyway. As a second bonus, the water helped the sand clump together and made the barrier-making easier. He worked furiously, barely thinking as he went at it. Hopefully, this would buy the eggs some time to hatch and impress.

Mine, why do you feel so sad? the little bronze looked up in question to the red head after his answer had been given. It hadn't made any sense to Kaenith. If you want answers, why don't you go and get them? J'kiran looked down at the bronze's words, blinking for a moment before smiling weakly once again.
It's not...quite that simple, Kaenith. He replied, crouching by the bronze and running his fingers gently across his eye ridges. He might've said more, had that not been when X'ion decided to pipe up with the...rather interesting question. J'kiran was back in a standing position in an instant. "If we were..." he started to repeat, blinking then at the oddity of the question. But suddenly a bit of the situation made some sense. At least part of X'ion's strange behavior was fitting into place. "If I had a brother, why would I want anything from him?" he asked, then shook his head once. "Simply having one would be enough."
Brothers are good to have. Kaenith added to his rider's comment, though only to his own bonded. J'kiran looked down and nodded in agreement before turning back to X'ion.
"When I was younger, I always thought my foster parents were my only parents. Then they told me one day that I'd been adopted, and I was filled with more questions than I'd ever been in my whole life." J'kiran shrugged. "All they were ever able to tell me is that I was found abandoned just outside the Hold." He quieted a bit in a reflected moment, then his face took on a suddenly worried expression. J'kiran looked out towards the entrance where the water was starting to splash in, though at this moment he barely registered the shouting from the Candidate Master and her Assistant. "I hope they've got help back on the farm," he half muttered. His parents were close enough that they'd be hit with the hurricane at least somewhat as badly as the Weyr was getting it.
He was distracted then, by Kaenith nudging against his leg. Mine, the ground is wet. Can't we go with Resith and His? I'm done eating. I don't want to be down here. J'kiran blinked down at the young bronze, realizing he would have to push away the worry for his parents. Right now his duty was to his dragon. There wasn't anything he could do for the older couple so far away anyway.
J'kiran looked over to Akki and Rhia, calling a question to them. "Candidate Master Rhia," he asked over the wind, "Where should we take them?" The boy motioned to the hatchling by his side.

Marletta shifted nervously, only now becoming aware of the soaked sand beneath her feet. This was definitely not good. She bit her lip glancing at the unhatched eggs, what would this mean for them?
Marletta turned at the sound of Rhia’s voice. She nodded and followed the orders. It would take her farther away from her possible dragon but it was the best thing they could do for the dragonets at a time like this. They needed to be led away from the entrance. As she was stepping back she heard Marletta! Marlettamine please protect your Issaeyith. I am afraid! Feed me please and felt something pushing against her legs.
The girl stumbled a bit but remained standing somehow. It took a moment for her to realize what was happening. The voice had said her name was Issaeyith, a dragon’s name. Not any dragon but her dragon! She smiled lovingly at the beautiful green. Reaching out she scratched Issaeyith’s eyeridges, Kaz liked that so she assumed the green would as well, trying to calm her down. “It’s ok Issaeyith. I’m here. Let’s get off the sands and get you some food.”
Keeping a hand on the green she led Issaeyith over to the feeding area. As she was walking she heard Zuhayr’s whisper-scream and blushed. He had remembered their conversation from the lake. She smiled at the boy and mouthed ‘Thanks’ and ‘Good Luck.’ Issaeyith was keeping as close to Marletta as possible and the green almost tripped the girl up several times. Sorry, mine
“It’s ok, dear” Marletta said with a soft smile. She thanked a drudge who brought her a bowl of meat for the ravenous green. Marletta wondered if her dear green would ever be full.
--- “That’s a fine brown, R’yo” Sh’rel said, catching the boy’s name when Akki said it. There was no doubt that the brownrider had a certain fondness for brown dragons, it was only natural since he impressed on himself
. He gave R’yo a small grin before returning his attention back to the hatching. Sh’rel leaned forward watching the events unfolding upon the sand. His chin rest upon his hands that were clasped together. This did not look good, not at all. A hatching was supposed to be a happy occasion, with the way this one was shaping up it could end in disaster. He tapped his foot muttering, ‘Come on, come on, come on’ to himself.

Tanwen’s comment went completely amiss by Leander as he waved her off. “Yes, love, now focus on the hatching.” He glanced over to see her reaction to what he’d called her, trying to irk her all the more. She was by far the funniest to tease, she was always playing hard to get. He liked a girl with an attitude, someone who dared not let him win-for most often times he did. Then, to his surprise since he didn’t think it legal, some of the Candidate’s were building up the sand around the eggs to keep them safe from the water threatening to finish them off. Leander shrieked a high-pitched, girls, scream. “Save them, save them!” he shouted, hopping from foot to foot. The impression of the rain forest green was another thing that went right over his head while he remained doing his silly dance. “Hurry, hurry,” he called out, looking down to see some water swirling around his feet. He shrieked a second-time, running to his right, causing him to bump in to Tanwen. He flinched away from her, looking her in the eye. “That right there, that was fate,” he said, clearly referring to his having ran in to her.
~ ~ ~
R’xis and Wolf both looked to R’yo, not having seen nor heard him coming up to the stands. Wolf’s eyes widened at the sight of his Brown, it was quite large for a Brown-was it not? She looked from R’xis to R’yo, sitting in-between the two. “Congratulations R’yo, you’ve done a fine job.” She extended her hand out to him, as to offer him a proper handshake. A grin lighted her face and R’xis’ brows furrowed. “What’s this about wet?” he asked, “I’m not too sure as to what that would mean myself R’yo. Perhaps you should ask your lovely Brown to clarify?” R’xis looked to Ersith, expecting her to make it known to all of them just what the Brown had been speaking-of. Wolf gasped, pointing to where the Candidate’s were desperately trying to build up the sand around the eggs to create a safe barrier against the water. The water is threatening to sweep away the eggs, she explained, allowing all three of the humans to here, along with Ersith and R’yo’s Brown Resith. Wolf turned to look at Serinth, fully understanding now why Resith had been so worried to stay down there. “That’s terrible! I wish I could do something,” Wolf frowned, leaning her elbows on her knees while supporting her face with her hands. She looked over and up at R’yo. “I hope the rest of the eggs will hatch safely...” There was deep sorrow in her voice. “Me too Wolf, we just have to keep positive for now.” He smiled encouragingly at R’yo, sure that Resith would be concerned for his clutchmates. I will assist Kaith in any way we can, Ersith said, much to R’xis’ surprise. Ersith must’ve been considering what Kaith was going through right now.
~ ~ ~
Tieler stepped out of the water, staying clear of where the sand was becoming wet. She shook her one foot and then the other, watching water droplets fly off of her footwear. Her eyes went noticeably wider when Khris was standing next to her explaining how he suspected that she’d impress, even if it wasn’t at this hatching that she did. She just cast him a glare, “A fat lot you know. Why are you even talking to me to begin with? It doesn’t look as if you have a dragonet standing by your side, hm? Or perhaps that’s because it’s too busy currently drowning in water.” Her words were sharp, and not only sharp but intensely bitter. Did she feel guilty? No, not her, though there was a weird feeling in her stomach that she couldn’t quite identify. Then when Raska popped-up saying that the boy was right she shrugged, not seeming to care either way. “Yes, I do have Alias, not as if it makes much of a difference. I couldn’t really care or less as to what I have.” Alias’s head drooped, as if Tieler’s words had hurt her, which they likely had. Tieler actually felt guilty this time, but she knew that her mouth wasn’t something she ever tried to control. She really appreciated Raska standing by her, especially since the girl was her friend. As for Khris, she didn’t even know this shorty. “Be careful you don’t drown yourself, I’m sure the water will be reaching you soon enough,” she spat at him.

R'yo looked over to see who'd congratulated him, and saw a brownrider he recognized as being a transfer, though he couldn't quite remember his name. He smiled and nodded, saying, "thank you," before he heard Resith's mournful thought speech. *My clutchmates will be drowned?* The dragonet lifted his head up and looked at the sands, and R'yo could feel a sense of rising concern and half-panic from the dragonet. He looked helplessly at R'xis and then Wolf, when her congratulations registered and he saw her hand out in front of her.
He took it with a small smile, though it was hard to be happy for himself and his own impression if Resith's clutchmates were to drown! He could see the Candidates, trying to get the dragonets away from the edges. There was also one boy trying to kick sand up around two eggs that were closer to the edges. "Do you think they'll make it in time?" he asked the girl, realizing he was still holding on to Wolf's hand, while looking down at the horrifying scene below. He didn't know why he hadn't bothered to let go-perhaps he hadn't noticed, so he gently let his hand slide out of hers, and put it on Resith's neck.
~~~~~~
Tikal saw Khris go to help Kestrel, but then when the other boy ran to try and start barracading two eggs that were in more danger than the rest, he made up his mind. Two were better than one, he couldn't just stand there and do nothing. He ran over to where Khris was, and began doing what he was, only he didn't care that he wasn't supposed to touch the eggs. That was protocol, and he knew it. Sometimes life gave you situations where you had to throw protocol to the wind. "We can't afford to not touch them, Khris," he said to the other Candidate, looking him seriously in the eye. "There's no way that kicking sand up like this is more efficient than using your hands-so come on!" His tone was urgent, he bent over and began piling the sand up around the eggs, giving the smallest a slight shove up higher onto the growing pile, barracading the two as best he could by packing the wet sand around them in a sort of 'nest'. He was shocked at how much lighter that small egg seemed than the large, nearly gold-sized one. Imagine if that egg held a gold-what a tragedy that would be, no matter either way! He was aware that they were near to Kaith, who might not have otherwise appreciated the Candidates coming so close. But he knew that they had no options. The water was rushing in, starting to rise. Even their feeble efforts to barracade these two eggs would eventually become futile if they didn't hatch! The water was sweeping away at the bottom of their 'sand nest' and he found that it was all he could to to keep on packing in more wet sand!
~~~~~~
Kestrel could feel her knees almost shaking. Could the hatching have picked a worse day? She didn't think so. She could see Candidates running around, trying to make sure that the dragonets were drawn away from the entrance and edges. She could see Khris, who'd for a moment stood beside her, run off to try and 'save' the two eggs which were in danger of becoming flooded first. Then, Tikal joined him, and she herself still stood there in front of the stormy blue and peridot green, making sure that they didn't think of going past her...
~~~~~~
Kaiya didn't care that she looked like an idiot, she kept shouting and waving her arms at the dragonets, making sure attention was kept on the Candidates nearest the center. Her eyes watched the two remaining greens, mostly, but she wanted all the dragonets to focus their attention over where she and the majority of the others now stood. They mustn't go near the rising water!
~~~~~~
X'ion looked over when he heard a girl's voice addressing him and J'kiran, but he only nodded curtly and then looked back at the taller boy. He couldn't have been more surprised by J'kiran's answer. He actually wanted a brother? Why would anyone want someone like him for a sibling? He was the last type of 'brotherly' figure on Pern. But as he listened to what came next, he was flooded with a sense of relief. So, J'kiran was fostered too!
"You think having a brother is a good thing? Well, maybe you'd change your mind if you got to know me..." he said, eyes cold and tone derisive. He didn't think J'kiran knew anything about him. Besides, sounded like he just wanted answers about his past-not that he actually wanted X'ion as a brother for the sake of having him as one. Well, answers were something he did have a few of. He had a portrait. He had a note. Did J'kiran have a note, too? Maybe it was something like his...
"I'm sure they're fine," he said abruptly, and then, "you want answers, I might even not have the ones you even want. I've got a note. I've got a picture, and I've got what my own foster parents told me. If that's not good enough for you, nothing I can do about it," he said, crossing his arms over his chest. The thought that J'kiran might even want him as a brother despite how he viewed himself didn't seem to be registering as even a thought. He just figured J'kiran had some mental image of a nice, dependant and loving little brother. Well, he was none of those things. He was independant, and he wasn't sure anyone would find him all that nice. Besides, he didn't even know what being a brother meant to him, or was about. He had to admit, when he'd been considering that J'kiran was probably his brother, the only family he had that he could be in contact with, he'd felt something. However, he still didn't know what that something was.
*X'ion, I want to go away from here, too!* came the pleading mental tones of Azaranth. X'ion nodded, and was rather glad that J'kiran piped up with the question he might have otherwise added. R'yo had taken his brown to the stands-was that a good place to go? It was certainly safe up there, unlike the sands...
~~~~~~
Raska snickered at Tieler's words to Khris, and then said with an eyebrow quirked, "burn, shorty, burn..." It wasn't meant as an offensive statement to Khris, but what Tieler said had certainly been harsh enough to warrent her saying it. She shrugged it off and then said more quietly, "you'd better hope none of them drown, bud. What if one of ours is in there? Even if it's not-not exactly something I want to see happen, y'know?" She frowned, looking over at the eggs and then the dragonets. "Even if they aren't ours, no sharding way I wanna' see it happen." She glanced over at Khris, then back at Tieler, sighing heavily and crossing her arms. Seemed others were trying to actually stop the dragonets from going near the entrance. Then, Khris took off and she rolled her eyes. "Boys-always trying to play heroes," she said. She'd never admit she rather admired the way others were running around trying to save the dragons. She glanced over at Tieler and said with a wry smirk, "maybe we oughtta' try and do something to help 'em out?" she jerked her head to the very center of the sands, where Kaiya stood waving her arms. "We should get our hides over there. Might get those wherry-headed dragonet's attentions." She didn't wait on an answer. She just walked over to where Kaiya was, shooting her a dirty look. The girl looked like a total moron. No acocunting for some people though, she supposed!
Sorcha rung her hands worriedly, couldn't the queen just nudge them closer to the middle? Then again the eggs were suppose to be fragile because of all the rocking. It would be better to risk injuring them to have them die in the water. Then again, there was still a little time.
Calm down, I'm sure Kaith wouldn't allow any of her young to be hurt. The moonstreak continued to hum with the rest of them, but despite her soothing words she worried as well.
Sorcha nodded, it'd be fine. In addition to Kaith, it seemed the Candidates were helping. At least they were all making their way towards the middle now.
~~~~~~~~~
Satnee glanced to the side when she noticed her feet getting wet. Apparently it was flooding past the sand bags. Though she was loath to do it, she moved forward to mingle with the dragon riders in order to get further in the Sands. She almost wished there were more Sand bags, but she didn't really want to save them did she? Stupid dragons. Then again they were just babies really .... Satnee shook her head. Her getting more bags or not wouldn't make a difference. If all those Candidates and dragons couldn't do something it wasn't her fault either.
~~~~~~~
Move towards the eggs? Awesome! Kallan made his way towards the middle with the rest. Anytime he could, he'd trail his fingers a breath above the eggs the passed liking the forbidden thrill of it. He immediately sobered when he remembered why they were doing this. He glanced at the two eggs closest to the water and the boys trying to help them. He smiled, doing something was better than standing here. With his ever cheery mindset he ran towards the two eggs to help pack the one Tikal wasn't working on. "Hey," he expelled in a huff as he kneeled next to the egg, "Any other plan if this doesn't work?"
~~~~~
K'nest watched the whole event with a growing feeling of helplessness. There just wasn't any way he could help. Anything thing just seemed too outlandish or wouldn't help the situation much. He glanced at the girls trying to corral the dragonets and the boys pushing up sand. A barricade
Mine? Did you say something? A blue wedge-shaped head leaned close to K'nest and he smiled. The blue was never phsically or mentally far. No, ah, I was just wondering if a dragon could help. You know, become a barricade like those Candidates are doing. Perhaps stopper the opening of the Hatching Sands with their body? But there are too many people in the way, they'd have to move first .... I don't know, it's probably a stupid and desparate idea. It'd have to be a big dragon. He shook his head and resigned himself to watching this unfold.
I'll tell Kaith K'nest winced, he didn't really want the Gold knowing what a dimglow he was, but the blue was always eager to help. He should have known better than to say anything.

Shino ran towards the hatching sands. He was late again... he couldn't afford to be late. Though he had been busy talking with the new Weyrleader. As he came to the hatching sands, he saw the flood of people inside. He gasped, realizing how many people were there. As he came it, he looked around, breathing hard from running there. He wanted to know exactly what was going on. His eyes fell on the hatchlings and then he knew exactly what was going on. He sighed and shook his head. He was late again. It always happened. He either never impressed, or he was late to it. It really unnerved him how unfortunate and pathetic he could be.
As he came up to the group, he looked down, nervous. He didn't know what they would think of him for being late. He tried not to, but it ended up happening anyways. As he looked up, he saw people that he hadn't seen before. Newly impressed and old partners. A lot of people were gathered for this, and he felt sort of left out.
