The Queen studied Jessalyn for a few more moments and then she moved her head away. Touch my eggs then child but see that you do not tarry long for your feet will become scorched and there are others who wait for their turn and I grow irritated.
Kaith moved back to where she had built a mound to rest herself on. She turned to scan her whirling gaze upon the eggs and the three people in the Hatching Cavern.

Her heart soared when Kaith gave her permission to touch the eggs and though she was excited and anxious to get on with it she remembered to give another curtsy and say, "Thank you so much, I'm honored." Then, as quickly as she could without seeming rude, Jessalyn made her way from Kaith toward the eggs.
As she reached the first egg, she let her fingers trail slowly and gently across the shell. It felt nothing like she thought it would and despite the heat soaking up through her feet she couldn't help but shiver with excitement. She progressed from egg to egg, most she let her fingers just trail across but there were a couple that caught her attention more than the others and she would lay her hand on them for a moment.
Before long she came to what she realized was the last egg and she sighed with dissappointment. If only they had all been allowed to experience this at once, all the candidates together. As it was, her time was over and she needed to go back to the other candidates. As she'd been told, Jessa once again thanked Kaith then backed out of the hatching cavern.
She smiled excitedly at Rhia as she passed and hurried back to the rest of the Candidates. The first set of eyes she sought were looking for her too and she went straight to Valkoran. "It was amazing!" she whispered excitedly

Valkoran watched as Jessa walked to the Hatching Grounds, feeling rather ill. She was the first female candidate, and everyone who knew anything about Kaith's stolen egg knew that the queen was convinced the thief was female. How would the queen react to a girl candidate? Valkoran's stomach felt rather tight as he watched his Jessalyn walk out of view.
Several minutes of agonizing later, Jessa walked back the way she had gone, glowing and all in one piece. Valkoran sighed in relief and then grinned as she walked straight in his direction, her eyes meant only for him. He couldn't help but slip an arm around her shoulder to give her a quick squeeze as she whispered how amazing it had been.
"I'm just glad you're safe," he whispered back, not betraying just how worried he'd been.

Rhia smiled at Jessalyn. A bit of the tightness in her chest eased. The first female Candidate had come through and had left unscathed. That was a great sign.
The brownrider pulled from the bowl again. "Perin." She told the flitt. She sent the flitt with an image of the dark-haired Tanner lad and settled down to wait as the tiny silvery creature fllitted out.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Anassa let out an excited little sound as Jessa returned. "She wasn't mad at you Jessa?" The young Harper asked. "Look, the flitt is back. Who does she want this time?"
Gylfie hovered for a few agonizingly slow moments before lighting flitting to the tall, well-muscled lad with the blue-black hair. ~~~~~~~~~~~~
Perin had smiled at Kira when she turned her attention to him. She was pretty, that much he would admit but so were quite a few of the other female Candidates. "The egg is still missing and the eggs are less than a sevenday away from Hatching. A pleasure to meet you Kira."
Perin brushed a bit of his blue-black hair away from his face, fishing out a runner tail and pulling the smooth mass back behind his dark-skinned face. "You are lucky. I am not normally so garroulous. Most of the other lads are a bit more talkative than I am except for Kalor. He normally just sticks to himself." He glanced around and smiled when Jessa returned. He waved a congratulations at her.
"Looks like the Queen let Jessalyn touch the eggs. We will see who is next." He looked a bit surprised when the flitt hovered in front of him. He gulped and his face paled a bit under his tan. "Here goes nothing." He said softly. "Excuse me Kira, Hasima."
He made his way out to the Hatching Cavern, bowing to the bronzes as he had been instructed. He moved until he caught the Candidate Master's signal and bowed low before the enormous golden creature.
"Greetings to you my Queen. My most profound respects to you and your rider. My name is Perin and..." He broke off as the Queen snaked her head around and sniffed at him. "I..." He gulped. She was so big.
What is that smell on you?
"Smell? Forgive me Queen. I am a Master Tanner. I smell of hidework and cleaner. I was working on riding straps for a bluerider this morning."
I will inform my rider that I wish for new riding straps. Touch the eggs young Tanner and do not forget that I want new straps.
"N-n-no Queen. I will not forget and I would be honored." He bowed low again, mentally cursing himself for losing his composure. Her head was taller than he was not to mention her wings and body.
The egg shells were perfectly smooth and hard under his calloused hands. He marveled at the swirls of color. His pale blue eyes were wide with wonder and his face radiated happiness. One day soon he would watch these perfectly smooth eggs split open, revealing the tiny forms of the magnificent beasts that protected Pern. They would be theirs to nurture and raise to become the saviors of their planet. Perin felt a thrill run through his body at the thought of what that meant.
He caught the Candidate Master's nod and bowed low again before the Queen. "Thank you for this honor and I will begin preparing hide for your straps immediately." He backed out, bowing again before he left. He returned to the other Candidates.
"She is huge." He said with awe. "She wanted to know what that smell was on me..I forgot that I smell like hidework and then told me that she wanted new riding straps. Wow. Dragons are so intelligent."
He turned his head. The flitt was back yet again. This time she hovered uncertainly in front of the Candidates with the hide tucked in her claws. She obviously didn't know who she was looking for. She offered the hide to anyone who would take it. The strip of hide read Hasima but the flitt didn't know who she was.
Hali smiled with relief as the first girl came back. Good, the queen was being careful and not attacking wildly like she heard the gold had on the first day. Hali did not know, because she had been too afraid to leave the barracks. She watched as Perin left and came back. She smiled again as he complimented the queen on her size and intelligence.
Jakel noticed that the flitt was flying to no one in particular. He stepped forward to read the slip, then smiled. "Hasima, it's your turn." He said to his friend. Since she was normally shy he walked to her and gave her a light push toward the hatching sands, just in case.
"Good luck." Hasima stammered as the flitt landed before Perin, beckoning him towards the sands where he would see the Queen and touch the eggs. She fiddled with her hands but looked up when Perin came back, in a state of wonder, statings things about Kaith's height and how he was going to work on riding straps for her. She listened, nodded a few times and then her head snapped over to Jakel when he said she was next.
If her friend wasn't there, directing her towards the sands she would have backed up out of there so fast, but instead her feet were slowly understanding and going off on their own. She closed her eyes, squeezed Jakels hand for a second and made her way towards the sands.
The sand was hot, and it felt like her skin was melting away if she stood still which she did for a second before she registered the heat underneath her feet and forced herself to keep walking. She tried to breathe but it felt like something was blocking her mouth, suffocating her. She lifted her head and bowed slowly and almost stiffly to the bronzes before continue walking, heading towards Kaith.
Saying that Kaith was huge would be an understatement. She was past huge that was for sure, she was gargantuas. All the stuff she learned moments before rushed into her head at once and she paused before bowing quickly and deeply and stammered out, "G...G...Greetings my Queen.". She paused to take a deep breath and then continued, "I hope you and your rider are in good health. I'm...Hasima and I was wondering if I could have the honour of touching your eggs.". She straightened, breathing deeply as her nerves got to her but still she lifted her head to stare at the Queen.
Jakel laughed as Hasima tried to step backwards before he pushed her foreward. He smiled as she squeezed his hand and he squeezed back before giving her another light shove. He didn't say anything, but he had a mocking smile on his face, just like always.
"Go on Hasima. It isn't that bad." Perin reassured the girl. "She is suspicious but so far she hasn't been too agitated. You'll be fine. She will know you are innocent. She wasn't mean to Jessalyn. You'll be fine."
Perin watched the shy little thing. He hoped that Kaith would not take her shyness as nervousness because of guilt.
Anassa chewed on her fingernails as the other Candidates were called forward one by one to touch the eggs. She wondered if the Queen would refuse to let anyone go. Would it be her? Would the Queen think she stole the egg? What would happen? The young Harper was a bit apprehensive.
Touch the eggs and get out She said shortly.
((sorry guys....i have no inspiration at the moment))
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Kaith raised her head, her eyes whirling with annoyance. She resisted the urge to snap at the girl as she stuttered but her rider strode forward to place a calming hand on her hide. She could feel her rider willing her to remain calm and patient.

Hasima's eye twitched involuntarily as the dragon seemed to have begun to lose her patience quicker than expected, but somehow remembered to quickly bow and say, "Thank you my Queen.". A image flashed into her head, something that involved her being in Kaiths jaws, but she remembered that Perin said that Kaith wasn't mean to Jessalyn, so maybe other than that quick snap-like thing that the dragon said to her it would be all right.
She stepped away from the large Queen and went over to the first egg and reached out, her hand trembling slightly at her anxiety and excitement that rushed over her all over once, and let her fingers trace over the egg for a moment, marvelling over the flawness of the egg before moving to the next one. She moved through them rather quickly actually, she got too absorbed into looking at them with awe and was silently thanking every moving thing for allowing this to happen to her, her, something that no one expected.
She paused for a second as she reached the last egg, but lifted her hand from the smooth, hard surface as she left the eggs, wishing silently she could spend a lifetime with them. She thanked Kaith again, quietly because her mind was wandering back to how the egg felt underneath her large hands and headed back to the other candidates. She reached the table she was sitting at and said quietlu and breathlessly, "It was...amazing, no better than amazing. Magnificent.".

Jakel laughed at Hasima's reaction. "See!" He insisted that he was right. "It was a good thing you went after all the." His normal broad grin covered his face. His eyes darted around for Gilfie as he waited impatiently to see who was next.

She watched him as he smiled back. When he was called next she waved him a goodbye and shouted, "Good luck!" She looked over to Hasima after watching him walk away and onto the sands but by the time she was going to say something she too left. She watched as Perin then Hasima came back out one after the other then wondered who would be next. She sat back a little and gave a bit of a sigh, though not one too noticable.

Post by Wolf on Oct 13, 2006 16:03:42 GMT -5
(( OOC| Hrm, here I go then. I'll place both Wolf and Roxis in as if they had come while the instructions were being given out. I would've obviously been here earlier but... circumstances wouldn't allow it. ))
This was the day, the day she had been hoping and dreaming wouldn't come too fast while she was still breathing it all in. Wolf entered the Lower Caverns as the Candidate Master began speaking. She tried to remember why she hadn't come as early as every one else had but it really slipped her mind. All she could remember was being extremely tired this morning, and that weird dream... Either way, she had made it in one piece. Her eyes diverted to Jakel, her heart skipping a beat as the boy sat there excitedly. They had both been speaking of this day in previous conversations, both with much excitement and disbelief. She headed over to him slowly, her gaze steady while still focusing up on the words of the Candidate Master. 'This is it... but can I do it? I've always dreamed of this yet-' her thoughts faded as the Candidates were instructed to write there names down up on a piece of hide, given by Rhia. Wolf grabbed a piece, looking down at it, not seeming to move for a moment's time. 'This is really happening...' She took a deep breath, exhaling calmly although she found the simple task difficult to achieve. Quickly she wrote her name down, knowing that tardiness and being slow to follow commands wouldn't be acceptable. As her thoughts continued to flow she placed the hide in the bowl, looking to Christae with a warm smile. 'I was lucky enough to see Kaith before all this, both her and Christae took such good care of me.' She smirked lightly to herself as she looked back on her first day of being at Dark Moon Weyr. As Candidates lined-up behind Rhia to await there turn up on the sands Wolf did the same, appearing pale as a ghost once she heard that Jakel was the first to touch the eggs. She felt her entire body stiffen as both of her hands tied together, coming up under her chin. Her eyes closed firmly shut and the girl bit her lip. 'Please let him be okay, please...' Her concern for one of her best friends was not unneeded, Kaith was extremely powerful and the fact that one of her eggs had been stolen was the closest thing to a nightmare come true for her. The thought of one of Kaith's eggs having been stolen rattled her immensely, it was hard for her even now to think of what may have happened to it. 'Focus on good things, focus on the present.' She knew once she focused on depressing things she had a hard time turning away from those thoughts/feelings. Her mind went back to when Jakel had been so thrilled to be first, knocking over the chair he had been seated on. This brought laughs from her, though she must've looked weird (standing there laughing at what would appear to be nothing). ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Roxis came in around the same time as Wolf, grabbing one of the available seats as he watched the Candidate Master intently. He couldn't believe what was happening either. Coming to this Weyr and becoming a Candidate were both unexpected yet, touching the Golden Queen's eggs? Now that was surely a fine privilege he thought he could only ever dream of having. His blue eyes quickly observed the Candidates around him, nodding to Wolf as an acknowledgment of the girls presence. 'She must be overjoyed... This is her dream... I can't believe I'm lucky enough to be here when it happens for her,' he thought, though no one around would know as to why. Showing respect for the Weyrleader and Weyrwoman was understandable, even more so for there great beasts. They had all been Weyrlings once, obviously remembering the hardships and pleasantries that got them to where they are now. He hadn't heard about one of Kaith's eggs being stolen, rather oblivious to most of life's occurrences. Roxis was always best described as a creator of his own world. Although he found himself liking this chosen way of life better the personality trait itself was a potential downfall. 'Compliment Kaith,' he repeated in his head a couple of times, already practicing silently different compliments he could dish out to make her feel less agitated about him touching her eggs. He wasted no time in writing his name down up on the piece of hide being given out. His own writing wasn't all that neat but he hadn't really been focusing on what it looked like, more what it was for. As he placed it in the bowl, a courageousness overcame him, something he only felt when about to experience something grand for the first time. He tried to be one of the first in the line-up, glancing at Wolf every now and then so he could see where she was to keep his eye on her sharply. As Jakel was chosen first to head-up he said, "congratulations," aloud. He ran a hand through his short, thick, blond hair.

Malenie stood and watched as each Candidate walked into the Hatching Grounds, and then exited, with a proud grin on their face. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath. When would her name be called? She was glad that she wasn't called first. That would mean she would have to set the standard for all of the Candidates to come before her. No, that was just too nerve racking. Malenie was never really one to started trends, though she always wanted to at Boll. More of follow them, with her own twist thrown in. She knew that she would never be able to be the first one to touch the eggs. What would happen if she did something wrong? Kaith would more than likely bellow at her. Christae, and Sh'iron would usher her out of the sands, and then because of her, none of the Candidates would be bale to touch the eggs. She would be hated for the rest of the days until the Hatching. No longer would she be able to walk into the female Candidate barracks, and want to chat with everyone there. She would be shunned for what she did. Nike wouldn't even have time to listen to her. What, with Ruanth, her Healing duties, and her upcoming child. But the white ride always had an open ear for Malenie when she needed one. And Malenie the same for her foster sister. Would Nike's grandparents listen? They were all so nice to her, but they wouldn't understand. None of them had stood at a Hatching before as a Candidate. After all, this one would be their first one to watch. Malenie swallowed hard, and let out her breath.
There was no reason for her to worry as she was. There was no reason for her to get worked up about things that may not happen. She would keep her eyes on Kaith the whole time. And Christae and Sh'iron. After all, she really didn't want to upset the Weyrleader, and Weyrwoman. That may ruin her chance at Impressing. She would be careful of every step that she took, and every touch of the eggs. She would be sure that she would touch the eggs that only Kaith wished her to touch. She would do the best that she could not harm the eggs in any way. Nakum chittered from her should. The little brown, then rubbed his head against Malenie's cheek. Once he was sure that His was calmed down, he winked /between/ more than likely to be with Ruanth, and the mob of firelizards that were always with her.
Malenie smiled. "That little brown was able to calm me down, think of what my dragon will do!' The girl thought as she looked after her little friend. Yes, she would be alright. Though she would have to watch her step.

Gylfie appeared again. The silvery green flitt hovered, peering at each Candidate, dismissing each one. She once again held a slip of parchment in her claws. She extended her claw. It was obvious that she only knew a few Candidates.
Anassa stepped forward and took the slip of parchment from the flitt. The creature chirped impatiently. "Valkoran, you are next." She said after reading the slip of paper.

Valkoran went from sharing a smile with Jessa to staring in less than a second. His stomach dropped, and he dropped Jessalynn's hand at the same time. He gave her a last smile, and walked forward, taking a steadying breath. He really did not want to stir up Kaith's wrath.
He took the steps along the passageway and into the cavern. He paused for a second before he remembered what to do. He bowed to the bronzes, who let him pass as Rhia had promised, and carefully walked into-- but not too far into-- the Hatching Grounds.
Kaith was normally a big dragon, being a queen and all. But today, she positively loomed over the eggs, her mental presence lending her size she didn't really have. Valkoran suppressed the urge to swallow hard. He bowed deeply.
"Good day, Queen Kaith," he ventured, "I am Valkoran. I hope that you and your rider are healthy and well." He paused. " I have come to ask for a chance to touch your beautiful eggs." He waited tensely for her reply, relaxing only when he remembered that Jess ahad come through alright, and her face passed through his mind.
