(( Sorry this post was long in coming but exams hit hard. But I passed english so all is good in the world ))
Sorcha looked up into Rhia's face, her own blank. She'd decide what she'd do. She didn't discount the advice but neither did she wholeheartedly like it. She followed the others but didn't do too much as most of her important items were in the cave. Including a hurt flitt, a pang of regret filled Sorcha again. She'd make it up to the blue somehow.

((That is fine))
Rhia waited patiently until all of the newly Impressed W'lings were in the Barracks and then went to a barrel of oil in the common area of the Barracks. "Ok, you have had time to find you things and now you will oil your dragons. Sorcha I need you an Lirlith to come here. Since she is injured I will help you oil her and use you as an example for the others. I will show you how to oil the dragonets and you will copy my example. Sorcha, I will oil Lirlith around where she was injured just to make sure no oil gets into those gashes. Tomorrow morning though I will expect you to do it yourself after all of the dragonets have been fed."

Sorcha bit the inside of her lip as Rhia spoke. There must be another motive to calling her out ... or maybe she was just worried about Lirlith. She couldn't always be looking for sinister motives but she didn't like the fact that she was being called to the front of the ... well class for lack of a better term. It was already bad enough thinking of living with the others without being sent to the front to be stared at.
Her face neutral, she went to the front. She stood to the side of Rhia and asked Lirlith to sit infront of the woman. The silver creature went happily, glad that /someone/ was going to take care of the iching in her hide.
Sorcha straightened slightly, not from something as wherryheaded as feeling like the teacher's pet, but because she wasn't going to be caught sulking. She kept her face impassive as she watched and listened to Rhia as the woman started teaching them how to oil dragonets properly.

Rhia asked Lirlith to angle herself so that her rider could see what the WLM was doing and then she turned to the class. She began talking, demonstrating on a section of Lirlith's uninjured hide.
"Dip your hands in the oil and begin rubbing on the dragonet's hide, preferrably in circular motions. That will stimulate the hide and make it shine as well as rubbing the oil. This prevents the hide from cracking and helps keep the hide soft while they are growing. Cracked hide is imperfect and imperfect hide can kill a dragon when they go between. Not to mention the fact that it makes unsightly blemishes and everyone will know that you don't take care of your dragon properly. Oil eases the itch and keeps their hide healthy."
"These dragons will have to be oiled daily, sometimes twice a day. From now on, you will eat, and sleep only after your dragons have been cared for. These dragons are your lifepartner. They protect you in Thread and in return we care for them and love them. Your dragon comes before all else, no exceptions. Once they get older they won't have to eat every day and they will not need to be oiled every day but while they are hatchlings, they need food and oil every day. Tomorrow we will also begin exercising them after they have slept off their breakfast."
"Dragonets eat, sleep, and complain about itching. For the next few sevendays, all you will be doing is feeding them, putting them down for their naps, and oiling them. When you are not doing that, you will be with me, learning how to be a dragonrider. Or you will be eating or sleeping yourselves. The leisure you had as a Candidate will basically be gone until your dragons are much older. You will complain, gripe, try to skip lessons, be exhausted, cranky, and mad at the world, especially me, but when you walk up to the WW to receive your rider's knots, you will be ready to take your place as a full rider and you will be proud."
She signaled to Sorcha to take over oiling Lirlith's front end and the side that had not been scratched. "Oil her but watch closely Sorcha." The brownrider began to oil carefully around the scratches. "If you get oil in these scratches she won't feel anything thanks to the numbweed but she could develop an infection. Be gentle here because the hide is tender."
A triangular head appeared in the doorway. The door was wide enough for half-grown dragons but it was barely wide enough to accomodate the large brown's head, especially considering the fact that the brown's eye was about as tall as a person and his head was several times bigger than his rider.
Greetings little ones. My regards to you and your riders. I am Mneith. Rhia is my rider. She and I will be teaching you. Respect her and me and do as you are told and one day some of you might be bigger than me. There was wry amusement in the brown's tone and warm welcome. I look forward to learning your names and getting to know you.
Rhia hadn't heard her dragon's greeting. "This big lump of hide is Mneith." Her voice was affectionate. "He will help teach you young dragonets how to be a dragon." She paused in her oiling long enough to pat the soil brown nose, leaving a bit of oil on the dark brown's hide. The dragon was about three or four turns out of W'linghood himself and so he understood better than some of the older dragons what the dragonets and their young riders felt.

Hasima listened carefully, burning every word that left Rhia's mouth into her mind, making sure she would never forget this precious information they were being given. She unknowingly flinched at the between part and how imperfect hide could kill a dragon, and looked down at Rimith, vowing to never let that happen to the tiny yellow.
She couldn't imagine herself ignoring Rimith's needs, there would be too much guilt on her mind to function in life if she did. She couldn't even being to imagine her ignoring the yellow hide as it grew itchy and began to crack. Lost in her thoughts she barely felt Rimith nudge her slightly with her body, but heard the dragon ask curiously, My hide is starting to itch, can we begin oiling it now? Or do we have to wait? Hasima frowned slightly, not exactly sure and said quietly to the older brown rider, "Are...we allowed to begin now?".
Rimith squeaked slightly as the large brown head appeared but she quited down and stood still as she listened to Mneith's greeting. Greetings back to you Mneith She crooned back to the brown, feeling the need to repsond back quickly to the older dragon to show her respect towards him.

Rhia looked up, a bit startled. She had been about to continue with her lesson when the quiet voice spoke out. "Oh, of course! How silly of me. I should have known you were waiting for my signal to begin. Forgive me. This is my first real lesson as WLM and I hadn't realized that you would wait for my signal on that. Yes, begin oiling them. Thank you Hasima, is it? For telling me that."
Mneith tried to turn his head a bit to see the tiny dragonet a bit better. The golden dragonet was almost big enough to touch her head to her rider's knee and she was the biggest. The little yellow was less than half the size of the young Queen.
You are a pretty one aren't you. The brown crooned back. I have never seen such a color as you. I thank you for your greetings little one. Would you tell me your name?

She blushed furiously, feeling bad for interrupting Rhia, whom looked quite startled that she had said anything at all which was okay, Hasima herself was startled that she spoke out herself. She nodded numbly, yes, that was her name and shyly said thanks for answering the question before she looked at Rimith, who was in the middle of a conversation. The girl didn't want to interrupt, she could wait for however long was needed.
Rimith's eyes whirled happily as she heard the large dragons compliment before cocking her head to the side and asked with curiousity and honest innocence, Is that a good thing that you have not seen a color like mine? Or a bad one? Happiness seemed to radiate from the small, yellow hide as she began to reply to his question. I am Rimith, and my rider is Hasima.
She was glad that she had picked Hasima as her chosen, she liked the girls shyness and her patience. She liked that she knew she didn't have to be rushed, but the yellow was simply too kind to keep someone waiting for too long. She excused herself from Mneith and turned back to Hasima and crooned that she was ready to be oiled.
Hasima placed her hands in the oil and knelt down beside the small dragonet, slowly rubbing the oil into the yellow hide in the circular motions that were suggested. She didn't want to go to quickly, she didn't want to miss a single spot and she knew that Rimith wouldn't mind that she was taking a bit. The yellow wanted to stop the itching, and to gleam for the feast, even Hasima knew that. She continued to oil the dragon, but listened for Rhia's next words, ready to memorize them.

J'kel, Jorath, Hali, and Orylith both listened closely to the words spoken by there new teacher. When she finished, J'kel looked around. He couldn't find Wolf and this disappointed him a bit. He hadn't gotten to congratulate her yet on impressing a queen or finding her brother. He had already congratulated Hasima, and Akki was already a full rider. Mine, I am so itchy. Couldn't you look for them later? Like, after you oil my hide? The medium young blue questioned. J'kel looked down and remembered what Rhia said about caring for your dragon first. "Of course. Sorry, I forgot." He rubbed his head sheepishly. J'kel bent down and began to oil the dragons hide as best as he could.
*************************
Hali turned around to pull the oil closer. When she turned back, she saw Orylith walking off. "Not again." The new green-rider mumbled. She followed Orylith who had walked over to Rimith. The green noticed Rimith was talking to the large brown, so she too turned to the brown. Hello. I am Orylith. The small green said quickly. She wanted to be part of the conversation too. Hali sighed. She knelt beside Orylith and began to oil the green's hide. You know. It is not polite to interrupt someone else's conversation. Hali said to the hatchling. Orylith turned her head to her bonded. It is okay mine. They don't mind, do you? Orylith asked, turning back to the large brown and little yellow.

It is a good thing youngling. I am certainly pleased to meet you Rimith and your rider as well. The brown twisted his head a bit more when a green began speaking to him. Well met young Orylith. The brown included Kalor when he spoke again. I do not mind the interruption W'ling rider of Orylith. In fact I want to learn all of the dragonets' names and your green is excused for interrupting.
Rhia finished oiling the injured part of Lirlith's silvery hide and began walking around to see how her charges were doing. They were on time. The dragonets would have a candlemark and a half to sleep if the riders kept up this pace.

((I am so sorry, I've been tres busy with all this schoolwork. I've hardly had time to sleep!))
V'koran followed the others into the barracks, where he quickly found his and Verith's place. He nervously checked the uncased scrolls to make sure they hadn't been crushed or torn. When he was satisfied that none of them had been harmed, he inspected Verith's couch. It doesn't look very comfortable, he said to the brown, who had curled up on it.
It is. I will like very much sleeping here. But I itch right now. Can we fix that? The brown got up and fidgeted.
Yes, of course, let's go, V'koran said hurriedly, checking to see that Verith hadn't started scratching his hide again. He found a spot near Rhia and listened carefully to her instructions, beginning to oil Verith and using the circular motions she recommended.
That feels so much better, Verith crooned, relieved from that horrible itching. Then he said, I am Verith, but to whom, V'koran didn't know.
----
L'von trailed behind the other male candidates into the barracks, where he found his designated bed. There wasn't much to see there, as he didn't have much, so he took the offered oil to use on Zalith.
Hurry up, she said, I itch so much and we were already slow getting in here. She planted herself in front of L'von and stared at him so intensely that he froze for a moment. Realizing that she was startling her lifemate, she nuzzled his knee and said, I didn't mean to be so demanding, but I do itch so.
L'von nodded and quickly dipped his hand in the oil, rubbing it carefully and lovingly into Zalith's multicolored hide.
Hello Mneith, I am green Zalith, the dragonet said conversationally to the brown. My rider is L'von.

Lirlith eagerly moved as Rhia directed and hummed quietly while the oil was applied. She tilted towards the brownrider's hands as they slowly moved down her small hide. Her many fauceted eyes had been whirling a slow contented blue until Rhia told Sorcha to oil Lirlith's hide, after that they went to red. It seems Sorcha still had reservations about touching the beautiful dragonet infront of her.
~Oil me now~ -But ...- ~But nothing! I will not stand for this any longer.~
With a baby growl she moved like a streaking comet for Sorcha's legs. Sorcha let out a cry, more from surprise than from anything else.
~There, now we are even. Now, if you please, oil me NOW!~ The dragonet said forcefully. Almost like Sorcha was the child and Lirlith the adult.
Sorcha felt warmth trickling down her legs. Lirlith had scratched her, they weren't that deep but the pain and ferocity of it had almost scared her. She ignored the blood slipping down her leg and knelt down beside Lirlith. For some reason Lirlith getting back at her made her feel better. They were even, they could start over again. It was alright now. She could deal with the rest now.
She rubbed her hands to warm the oil before rubbing, tentively at first, in circles on Lirlith's hide.
~~~~~~
K'nest held out a hand for Temesth to wait while he got some oil. He turned around, with oil in hand, only to see the little blue right behind him.
~I just wanted to make sure you were coming back ... there are so many other dragonets here. Bigger, better ones.~ It seemed the timid blue had the same feelings as on the Sands. That maybe K'nest didn't like or want him. He was bewildered with how to make the blue understand he was thrilled to have a dragon any at all.
~Maybe you did want just /any/ dragon. You probably would have went with another. ~ K'nest sighed and shook his head, falling back to silence, his one defense. Which did nothing to allay his little one's fears.
K'nest glanced at the others before applying himself to the task. He rubbed in small circles that slowly grew larger as he worked. He moved slowly and steadily over Temesth's hide.
Well met Verith and Zalith. You are pretty little things. I shall enjoy when you rise. Rhia would have tanned his hide if she had heard him but his rider was more concerned with showing a new dragonrider how to oil his dragon's hide.
Rhia had been walking through the dragonrider pairs and when she heard Sorcha's cry. She turned and her eyes widened when she saw that the dragonet had scratched Sorcha.
Mneith I need your help with a dragonet.
Excuse me little ones. What is wrong love?
Sorcha's Lirlith hurt her. You need to tell her that you do not hurt your rider.
I will. Lirlith, you do not harm your rider. What she did before was out of confusion. You do not deliberately hurt your rider. His voice was stern.
"Sorcha, I need to tend to those scratches. Like a flitt, you don't know what is on a dragon's claws." The brownrider had already gone to the emergency kit kept in the Barrack and returned with redwort and numbweed.
Sorcha shook her head, "I'm fine and I'm not done with Lirlith yet. Didn't you just say dragon care came before all else? I'll finish her and then clean up." She slowly went over the other's hide, liking the fact that it turned seemingly dull hide brighter. It was rather interesting to watch really. Almost like when you had dusty hands and let water trickle over it.
No, you don't harm you rider. I will if she needs it. And she needed it. She was refusing to oil me so I moved her along to the right decision. And, plus, she's not really harmed. Just more understanding of her place. This was just broadcasted to the huge brown and not Sorcha, who would have bristled at the thought of being 'put in her place'. Her tone was pleased that she'd manuevered Sorcha to the right move. If this was any indicator of things to come, they'd have many an arguement once Sorcha got over her guilt.
~~~~~~~~
K'nest smiled at the little blue. It hadn't taken him all that long to rub down the blue, considering its' size. He wondered how long it might take when it grew larger. It was a daunting task, he was glad Temesth wouldn't grow to a size like Mneith, or worse Kaith and Reinth. He wondered how they did it. It seemed a lot of dragon flesh to take care of.
The silvery blue gave him a draconic grin before curling up. It had been quite a day, breaking free of the egg, waiting, being fed, and this oiling. He thought it a good idea to nap soon. But he didn't want to let K'nest out of his sight. Who knows, the boy might not come back. It /had/ taken him so long to get to the Sands. Perhaps he hadn't wanted him? He fixed his dilema by moving to fall asleep on K'nest's lap. Now he could nap and make sure K'nest stayed with him.

Mneith's eyes flashed red
You are under the tutelage of my rider and I until the day you and your rider have earned your place with us by receiving your Riders knots, and even then I am your senion and Weyrlingmaster. You will listen to what I say and not sass me youngster. I can knock you end over end with the tip of my tail. Next time your rider neglects you, you will inform me and Rhia shall deal with her. She is still confused. Your rider has been through much and it is not your place to chastize her. You are to love her unconditionally.
Rhia listened and then tried not to smile as she heard the dragon muttering to himself about how youngsters were full of too many ideas these days. You aren't that much older than they are love.
Maybe not but I know a lot more.
Rhia sent an amused thought and then turned her attention back to Sorcha. "You will do as I say. Yes your dragon comes first but you can continue to oil her while I tend to those scratches. Besides, her hide will not burst in the few minutes it will take me to clean those scratches."

Rhia finished up with the dragonets and their riders and then called for attention. "You have an hour to get ready and for your dragons to nap. You will all be waiting for me when I return in one hour for inspection. Dress in your best Gather clothes. If you don't have any see me in my Weyr. I am on the third tiers of weyrs and Mneith will be on his ledge. If you ask politely he will come down to get you. I will leave my riding straps on for you. Don't be afraid to come to me. We have clothes to give to you if you don't have Gather clothes. We will go to the feast afterward."
Mneith pulled his head out of the door as his rider strode out.

J'kel stood up as he finished oiling the blue and jade dragon. He glanced around and frowned a bit. He didn't see Wolf. Maybe she was just behind someone. He really wanted to congratulate her. He decided he was going to have to wait until the feast to talk to her. With another glance his mouth pulled into a large smile.
Mine! I am tired. Can we go. I don't itch anymore. Jorath complained.
"All right. Come on." J'kel turned around and walked towards the male barracks. He got on his knees and searched through the clothes in his trunk while Jorath wandered over to his couch. He yawned again and closed his many faceted eyes.
************************
Hali sighed. As long as the brown said it was okay, then she wouldn't argue. She stood up when she finished. She listened to what the Weyrlingmaster had to say and hurriedly walked after the brown-rider, looking back to make sure that Orylith was following.
"Excuse, me. Weyrlingmaster, I don't have any gather clothes." She said in a deep voice. There never really was a need to get nice clothing. She had never gone anywhere nice, and all her clothes always had gotten dirty.

Hasima listened quietly and oiled Rimith who crooned happily, glad that the itching had ceased. She looked up as she heard something about Gathering clothes and bit her lip. She didn't have anything nice to wear, her parents couldn't afford anything pretty and no one at Ista cared to much about her family to offer to lend the girl stuff for when she was searched and taken here. Maybe Akki had something she could borrow, she knew the girl better than Rhia and would feel bad if she borrowed something from the brown rider and then ripped it somewhere.
But what if the blue rider didn't have anything she could borrow? Or she couldn't find her before the Gathering started? Just asked her if you can borrow some, she seems nice and her dragon is very nice. They will not mind if you do so. Rimith offered helpfully, though her words were slightly slurred as sleep claimed over her. She looked at Rhia and said quietly, "Um, excuse me, I hate to be a bother. But, uhm, I don't have any Gather clothes either. Would it be alright if I borrowed some for you? I'll try to keep them in perfect condition. Promise.".

The moonstreak was going to argue this point but decided not to. She was too tired. Maybe after her nap she'd tell the brown what this was all about. He was smart, he might actually get it if /she/ explained it properly.
Sorcha sighed and let herself be administered to. She wondered if her gather clothes were still in the tree. She shook her head. She wasn't sure she wanted to go back there. She supposed she would have to though, she couldn't exactly send the flitt to go get it now could she? She wrinkled her nose and sighed. Maybe she'd take a nap with Lirlith.
