Kaith lifted her head as a strange noise interrupted her nap. She scanned the cavern, looking for the source. She could hear the muted sounds of Weyr life from behind the cavern walls but those sounds were not what had interrupted her nap.
Tap, tap, tap.
The sound came again. Her jewel-faceted eyes swept the cavern again. She lifted her massive body so that she was sitting instead of lying down.
Tap, tap, tap tap.
The sound had a different cadence this time, and this time, Kaith knew what had awoken her. The egg was hatching.
The Queen hatches. It was a simple statement, spoken to the dragons of the Weyr and her rider, but it was one that caused such a flurry of activity that it was as if she had lit a fire with her words.
Christae dropped the charcoal stick that she had been writing with down onto her desk and rushed from the room to join her dragon in the Hatching Cavern. The dragons of the Weyr were humming on a deeper level than they had hummed before. They were welcoming a new dragon into the world. This time, though, they were welcoming a dragon that was their Queen, well, their Junior Queen. The humming vibrated the walls of the Weyr and alerted those that were not dragonriders to the impending arrival.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Rhia dismissed her Weyrling class and ran to the bell that had been set up on outside to summon the Candidates. She rang the bell, the loud peals resounding in the bowl and echoing in the entrances of the caverns.
Ebbeth, Akki will need to help the Candidates into their robes. Mneith called. Rhia was already running to the Kitchens to make sure that there was fresh meat available for the new Queen. There wouldn’t be a huge Hatching Feast, just a small celebration with the people of the Weyr.
The egg hatches. Mneith’s Mine requests you get the robes for the Candidates
If there was a door in the Female Candidate Barracks, Akki would have kicked it open for a very dramatic entrance. Instead she had to suffice with running through the curtain, her arms cradling the candidate robes that would be needed. “Up! Up! The egg is rocking about!” She yelled loudly, throwing the robes at the Candidates.
“Quickly put these on and then head out to the Sands. You all want to get out there before the Gold emerges from the egg!” She instructed, trying to rush the candidates. This was a big day for them, and for the Weyr, and she didn’t want to see anyone running late. “I will beat you with a stick if you’re late!” She warned with a sniff.
-----
Faine was rummaging through her stuff when the bluerider burst into the barracks and whipped the white robe at the girl. The robe wrapped itself around her head as Faine sat there, vaguely confused. What was going on? What egg?
Oh. Right.
That egg. Faine stood up, yanking the robe off of her head. She couldn’t go out with it on that way, that would be a fashion faux pas. She quickly thrust her arms into the sleeves, slightly terrified of the threats Akki was making. From what she heard about the girl, she didn’t doubt it that she would be beaten with a stick if she was late. Of course, her disorder kicked in at that very moment – the worst timing ever. She was forced to take off her candidate robe, put it back on, take it off and put it back on. She was actually pretty glad that she only did things in three’s – what if she was stuck putting it on twenty seven times or something?
The robes were on now though and would stay on this time. She quickly left the barracks and headed to the hatching cavern, deep humming echoing in her ears. It was weird, to be back on the sands again when it seemed like she had just gotten off them. The sands heat was uncomfortable on her feet but there was no time to worry about that. She approached Kaith and bowed three times. Hopefully the other two would appear soon, she felt awkward alone.
A gentle hum came from around the sands, as more dragons and their riders appeared. The sound quickly grew in excitement and fervor, and among the dragons to appear was the crash-landed green Daikalveth. The Weyr wall provided enough of a climbing advantage that, even with her torn wings, she was able to clambor up to watch. Oo, exciting!
Folding wings and perching atop a large, flat rock overlooking the sands, Daikalveth wiggled. It was exciting! Her rider, sadly, couldn't watch. So she would do it for her.
Rub it in some more, you overgrown boot. Eideen called from her cot in the infirmary.
~Do not worry, I intend to share. See the girl Admin's Note:
Her knees look like they will buckle out from under her.~ Daikalveth scanned the surroundings and sent the images, near real-time, to her resting rider. The red-head in robes made Eid smile slightly.
Give her some encouragement, will you? Eideen requested. And Daikalveth obliged. Head thrown back, the green gave a loud trumpet of joy and vigor, fanning wings. Talk about a cheer.
~~
Having heard the clamor, Dh'nen woke quickly from a nap and soothed the drowsy blue nearby. "I need to go watch. For Salina." Moving closer to Ez'ki, the scruffy bluerider shook his shoulder and covered his mouth with a hand. "The Gold Egg is hatching. Let's go cheer Salina on!" Tugging on appropriate clothing, Dh'nen waited at the opening of the makeshift barracks for Ez'ki.
Andilay had sat bolt upright when the bluerider invaded the make-shift Candidate barracks and shouted at them to get up. There was a moment of still asleep fuzziness in her mind before it was wiped aside by the red hurt of pain as the impression robe that had been tossed at her smacked her wounded arm.
Andilay winced, but grabbed the robe and put it on. Since they were in a hurry there was but time to brush her hair and then rush out with the other candidates... wait what was happening? Andilay blinked as her brain fully came online and glanced around and at herself. Oh, yes. The gold egg was hatching, carry on.
Once onto the hatching sands she noticed that the heat was again scorching, and that the seats for onlookers was slowly filling up. The impression of a gold was very important, very.... exciting. So logic dictates there would be many more people coming to watch.
Once before the great gold, Kaith, Andilay gave a very deep respectful swordswoman bow. She held it at it's lowest point for a few beats longer than normal then straightened and made her way to where the three candidates were supposed to go. One of the other candidates was already there, Faine, if she remembered correctly. A trumpet from a dragon further up the stands gave Andilay a small start. But it was a joyous occasion, and Andilay couldn't help a small bubble of apprehension and hope. Was she going to impress today?
Salina had been straightening her belongings and the small little area that was allowed to her. Akki came barreling in, baring white lumps that she tossed about and saying to hurry, hurry, hurry. Confused, Salina turned and caught a robe in the stomach. It thumped to floor and she grabbed at it, kneeling and looking at Akki as the other female fairly flew through her words.
The blonde’s heart sprinted into overdrive. White robes…Akki’s words…The Hatching! Salina gasped wildly and fairly flew out of her clothes in order to slide on the robe. She pulled it into place, belted it and hurriedly ran a comb through her hair before she was off, fairly sprinting through the corridors to the Sands. With every footstep, she grew all the more excited and anxious. She was terribly eager for the Hatching—she wanted to Impress, Faranth she wanted to Impress—but she also wanted to see who the Queen would pick if…if it wasn’t her. She was also hideously afraid that she would not Impress again and be crushed all over again.
She stopped at the threshold of the Sands, inhaling deeply. She gave herself a mental, two-second pep talk and then walked into the Sands, head held high, her shoulders back. She was here. She was ready. No matter what happened. That’s all that mattered. Salina approached Kaith and bowed deeply and respectfully to the Queen. She backed away, joining the other two females as they waited, as they hoped.
Eyes closed as Salina uttered a mental prayer to herself. Let her hatch strong, let her hatch healthy. And Faranth, guide her in who she should be with…Me or not. She inhaled deeply again, eyes opening. She scanned the spectators briefly, looking for Ez…and Dh’nen. She flushed lightly at the thought; settling herself, she turned back to look at the large egg they were all watching.
Tap, tap, tap, tap, tap.
The sound was getting more insistent but it could barely be heard over the excitement and the noise of the dragons humming.
The egg began to rock a bit, getting a bit harder as the tapping became more insistent.
CRACK!
With as loud a sound as it was, a person would think that there would be a huge crack in the egg. But no, the crack only ran halfway down the large, gleaming egg.
Tap, tap, tap This little Queen was methodical. Fracture lines appeared around the original crack and soon a small hole opened. A dark colored muzzle poked its way out. At least, it seemed dark. The hide was still wet so the true color of the dragonet within was hard to discern.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Kilzanth's wing nearly scraped the wall on the left side. P'rin mentally admonished him to stay more towards the center of the tunnel but the dragon had already corrected himself. A Queen was hatching. All the bronzes were hurrying to be there before she arrived.
P'rin could feel the vibrations from his dragon's hummings beneath his body. P'rin was excited but a little nervous, if that would be the word for it. This new Queen would be the Weyr's Junior. Would she and her rider abandon the Weyr later like Wolf did? P'rin didn't want to think about the young Queenrider that he had been growing rather attached to, well more than attached. That was in the past. She was gone, and not coming back now.
P'rin felt a little strange about the fact that the Jr. Ww would be younger than he was. Sometimes it felt strange to be a bronzerider, one who ranked higher than some, in a Weyr with older people ranked under him.
He slid off his dragon, for, while he was musing, the bronze had landed on the dragon tiers, one of the lower ones. He stood by his dragon in full riding gear, regretting not taking the time to change into something cooler.

People were pouring into the hatching cavern, it was clear that this egg held an important status in the Weyr. Waeith entered the cavern, quickly and as silently as he could as he landed on one of the dragon tiers - humming along with the others. He was now a part of the Weyr and was excited about the gold that would hatch from the egg.
V’ian took a seat on the stands, staring at the somewhat lonely looking three candidates. He was used to seeing a fair number of people out there, especially when it was a Queen egg but because of its late timing there were only a handful out there. He sat beside Hasima and nodded to the girl slightly, not really knowing her but he had sat near her the last time also. It only seemed polite.
Here it comes Waeith said, excitement obvious in his voice as he noticed the muzzle poke out from the container.
----
Faine bit on her lip, trying to stop herself from laughing. Her thoughts were churning right now and she couldn’t help but think that with all the tapping that maybe the Queen inside had Faine’s disorder and had to do something a certain number of times. The thought was amusing and made the red head feel a bit better.
She shot quick grins at the two girls as they joined her on the sands. It was less nerve-wracking when they were all there; at least that way all eyes weren’t simply on one person for the time being. She looked away from her fellow candidates and stared at the stands – trying to see how many people she knew up there. She recognized a couple but most of the people there were older, full riders already. She didn’t know of any full riders except for the WeyrWoman, WeyrlingMaster and CandidateMaster.
She stopped scanning the stands though as the audible crack reached her ears. The egg was beginning to break. Her green eyes gazed at it, a small hole appearing as a muzzle poked out slightly. This was pretty exciting actually, being able to see a gold dragon so close up.

Salina's gaze was settled firmly on the Egg before her--this was her chance, this was her future, this was her hope. She'd been left Standing at the Hatching just a few days prior...but it was for something bigger, it was for something better. She saw that now; she saw it loud and clear.
This could be the threshold of a new beginning.
The Egg began to rock and the blonde girl bit at her lip, nearly trembling with excitement. The moment would soon be upon them. Soon, either she or one of the two girls she stood beside would be bonded for life with the creature everyone had gathered to watch. They were watching their future, their own hope. They were watching the Hatching of their newest Queen.
The Weyr had been devestated when Wolf and her Queen had left. They had been left with only Kaith to repopulate a Weyr that was descending into something of ghost town. But now...Now they had hope. Now, they had something tangible in which to believe. They chose to believe in this little Queen. And her newest rider...whoever it may be.
There was a huge crack that made Salina jump a little. Eyes glued to the Egg, she saw how the noise had indicated a line that went halfway through the oval object. The occupant encased within tapped and tapped at the thin membrane separating her from the world. Trying to get out, trying to find her rider.
A muzzle appeared, causing a shallow gasp to fall from Salina's lips. She took a tentative half-step forward, blinking to make sure she had seen it right. It was there, some small part of this tiny creature had made its way through. And Faranth, it was a miracle.

The Queen determinedly worked her way through the membrane and the dark, rose gold of her hide could be seen, a few shades darker than it would be when she was dry. She let out a soft chirp that was filled with both frustration and stubbornness. She wanted out. She was hungry, she wanted her chosen, and she wanted to be dry. She was a Queen, that's for sure. Stubborn, pig headed, and all too regal. She managed to get one of her taloned forefeet out next to her muzzle and the crack down the egg split open even more. Finally, the egg cracked from one end to the other, splitting neatly in half. The inside of the shell was riddled with tiny cracks where the Queen had clawed and headbutted to create an opening but the egg had been tough and the only imperfection in the halves was the hole where her nose had stuck through. She sat on the egg shards for a few moments, fanning her wings out to dry. She was a dark, rose gold with some variations that were becoming more obvious as her hide dried. She lifted her wedge-shaped head and let out a bugle of triumph. She was free. Now it was time to find her chosen. She sniffed disdainfully. Only three girls to choose from. That was somewhat disappointing to the little Queen. She did have a healthy sense of vanity after all. She was a Queen. She took the bronze's adoring croons as her due. This was normal, not some over inflated ego.

Beautiful. That was the word. Awe inspiring beauty that shone on the sands. Of course her regal demeanor and stubbornness just added to her queenly pride. And her coloring! Ohh, how it reminded her of the fondly polished hilts of so many of her sharp friends. Andilay was quite sure that the queen could be just as deadly.
Andilay smiled as the queen sat upon her shell shards, looking upon the vastness of the hatching sands and all those who were transfixed upon her wonder. She felt as if all three of them were undergoing a deep scrutiny, as if to find which one of them were actually worthy of the shining gold. Perhaps it would be her? Andilay felt that if she was chosen she had the strength and will to be a good junior weyrwoman, and her laoyalties had always been to someone other than herself. She would not mind to be suddenly responsible for so much more... she could take it.
((This is such a failpost...))

Ooc|| FAINE REJECTS YOUR PM HAWK
It was interesting to see everyone’s reactions to the gold dragon. She could hear Salina’s slight gasp and she could see Andilay in the corner of her, completely awed by the dragon. Unfortunately, Faine wasn’t like other people. Sure she was awed by the dragon and everything, but she was also thinking about if she were a dragon. A bright red dragon! Ha!
These were the jumbled thoughts of someone who didn’t sleep much the night before.
She shook her head slightly, trying to focus. The dragon in front of her was quite regal looking – a perfect combination of dark and light golds. Actually it was slightly odd, Faine never knew there were so many variations of one color and yet there they were, all in one dragon. Part of Faine wanted to crouch down on the sand, waggle her fingers and make soft ‘Come here’ noises just so she could pet the gold. But she knew the critter was not a canine or a feline but an intelligent beast so she decided against that idea. She had images of her fingers being snapped off.
She cast a look at Andilay for a moment before letting her eyes settle back on to the dragon. If the gold was going to maul someone, Faine was hoping it would be her. Andilay had enough maulings in the past sevendays, the poor girl!

Salina gasped audibly when the Egg split and the Queen was once and for all finally revealed. She had to be in the top ten most beautiful things that the blonde had ever seen. No, that wasn't right. She was in the top five, the top three! Shells, that wasn't right. She was the single most beautiful thing Salina had ever seen in all her life. What were sunsets compared to this magnificent creature? What were moonlit strolls and beautiful vistas and mountains compared to this little beauty?
She was magnificent, truly magnificent. And so proud! Salina could see that even now. She was regal and proud and beautiful. So many adjectives ran through the girl's head that she felt slightly dizzy from it all. She wished, vaguely, that the Queen could have Hatched at a real Hatching but this was better, this was much better. This was all for her and that was right. She was a Queen after all.
And now the moment was upon her, Salina felt no nerves, she felt no sickness. She felt an overwhelming sense of majesty. She felt like time was hanging in the balance now, breath held, as the future combined with the present in a twisting, snakelike past that had so many outcomes, so many variations.
But only one would happen.
Eyes closed as she inhaled, releasing all her negativity and fear. There could be none of that. She didn't want to think she'd been afraid when something this fantastic happened to her. Whether she Impressed or not, it was fantastic. And she wanted to be as positive as possible now so she could remember it.

Belior awoke hearing Akki’s loud voice carry to the boys temporary barracks. He cocked his head to the side listening to what she was so excited about. Then he heard the familiar hum announcing the hatching. This was going to be exciting; even if he wasn’t on the Sands at least he’d be there to watch! Tumbling out of his bed he quickly found his clothing and raced to the Hatching Ground he didn’t want to miss a moment. It was just one egg and what if she hatched and chose quickly?
-- Marletta had been in the Dining Cavern when Issaeyith told her, She’s hatching! The Weyrling was surprised at how excited her little green sounded about the Hatching of the new Gold dragon of Dark Moon Weyr. Certainly she shower Kaith respect but the green had hinted that she did not enjoy the haughtiness of the larger colors, especially Gold and Bronze. Marletta jumped to her feet ready to hurry to the Stands to watch the Hatching.
Take something to eat you only just got here and it’s no good to go without breakfast Issaeyith scolded her rider. Marletta acquiesced and grabbed a red fruit to eat on the way to the Sands. She arrived at the Stands and hurried up three levels to sit on the third row she didn’t think very many people would be brought in to view this hatching even if this was a gold dragon. Marletta wanted to be closer to this hatching and have a better spot.
-- Sh’rel awoke in his Weyr to the humming of his Rolaranth. The brown’s humming was almost deafening in their weyr as it reverberated off the stone walls. Rolaranth glided down to the Weyr Bowl and Sh’rel quickly hopped off to head to watch the Hatching. Thanks, Rol. The brown rider strode to the Hatching Sands he spotted Belior up in the Stands and went to join the boy. The pair’s eyes fell upon the little Gold dragon as she emerged from her shell. “Well isn’t she a beauty?” Sh’rel murmured with a soft smile on his face.

The Queen finally stood, picking her way delicately through the shards of her egg. She moved towards the Candidates, passing by each one, as if she was studying them. Her eyes whirled idly red as she sat and pondered each girl for a while.
She passed Salina first and then moved on to Faine. She sat in front of the girl for longer than she had Salina but then she moved on to Andilay.
After she had inspected Andilay, her gaze turned to the gathering crowd, as if she could find her chosen from those watching but then she turned away again. She would not be rushed even though Kaith was urging her to choose so she could be cared for.

When Kaith sent out the statement that the queen egg was hatching, Soranith and Relina slowly made their way to the sands. Relina was well aware that her friend, Faine, would be there to try to Impress and so Relina wanted to be there for her, whether she Impressed or not, though she was confused as to what she would do if Faine did not Impress.
What if she does not Impress? How would I go about making her feel better? I have no clue how to be nice and comforting. Relina said as they approached the edge of the sands. Soranith calmly walked beside her and sat down when they stopped moving.
You are being nice by being here. You are showing support for your friend. Soranith replied as the little queen hatched and looked over the three candidates.
Ok, but wha do I do if she does not Impress? Relina desperately asked her dragon.
You'll know when the time comes, I'm sure, for now, let us watch and see what happens, mine. Soranith soothed. Relina watched the little queen looked for her chosen. Relina secretly hoped that Faine would Impress, she truly deserved it for being kind to her no matter how much hostility Relina countered with. For once, Relina felt like she had made a friend, a true friend who was like her. True, she had Zorn, and now Soranith, and they were wonderful to her, but she longed for human companionship for as long as she could remember.
You'll Impress, Faine, I know you will. If not this queen, then another in the next hatching. Relina willed. Soranith secretly relayed this message to Faine, knowing her riders words would give Faine confidence and thus, pleasing her rider, for she knew Relina wanted to call out to Faine and root for her, but she was unsure of the consequences of doing so.

The little Queen sat regally on her rump after walking back to one of the girls she had already inspected. She lifted her wings, allowing the variation of rose shades to show. They were nearly dry now.
Salina, your Deoneth is here. You needn't have worried. I was simply not ready for you last time. I hope you will forgive me, but you should have known I would be waiting for you another time. Her voice was mildly reprimanding, but so full of love that not even the most temperamental of people could take offence.
The rose gold of her hide was a bright contrast to the jewel-faceted whirlings of her now, rainbow colored eyes. She gazed adoringly up at Salina, her Chosen. Now the Junior Weyrwoman of Dark Moon Weyr.
You'll feed me now. Please. The please was almost added as an afterthought. She knew instinctively that politeness softens a command, so she was going to mind her manners. The rainbows were slow to fade to red from her eyes but as the rapture of her finding her Chosen became a little less new, the hunger pressed to the forefront.

The gold chooses another. Soranith informed Relina. Relina sighed and closed her eyes. She was really hopeful for Faine, but she knew Faine's dragon would come soon. She swallowed once and looked at Soranith, then back to the sands.
Let us greet Faine. Relina commanded. Soranith snorted and followed Relina as they walked around the edge of the sands till they stood near the area Relina knew Faine would walk. She stopped and crossed her arms and turned her head to face Faine, not saying anything, but giving an understanding nod.
OOC: I do not intend to have Soranith speak to others often, only when it's imperative to my part of the plot, which won't be often. Sorry if I looked like I rushed, didn't mean to.

The Queen passed before her prospective mates like a master would before his pupils. Salina felt the scrutinizing eyes of the little beauty and felt the judgment that formed because of it. She was nearly trembling in nervous anxiety, in anticipation. She was so terribly excited...so nervous...
Salina bit her lip as the Queen lingered before her. This could be it...this could be her moment...The little beauty moved on and Salina felt a stab. This could be another girl's moment. The instant where her future changed. The Queen sat longer in front of Faine and the blonde girl felt terrible pricklings of fear. Flashbacks of her last Hatching flashed before her and she nearly swayed, nauseous. The Queen moved on to Andilay and Salina nearly exhaled in relief but it wasn't over. Andilay could be chosen. Her chance was not that great. One in three. Better than some. Worse than others.
She reminded herself to breathe, watching as the Queen looked toward the Stands. A great stab of dread hit her. If the Queen didn't find her bonded...Either in those before her or those watching...No. No no no.
As she was internally freaking out, the Queen sat. In front of her. Salina was startled from her mentally ranting. She looked the Queen, met the beautiful rainbow eyes directed her way...and fell into them.
It was like tumbling headfirst into unconditional love. She was wrapped in all the colors, embraced by them and such happiness infused her that tears cascaded down her face in sheets. Salina knelt, not caring about the heat from the Sands. How could she, when she was here with Deoneth?
Deoneth...She reached out to cradle the wedge shaped head. It felt right. It all felt right. The girl beamed as she stroked the smooth, damp scales. It was supposed to be right. It was supposed to be like this. Salina sighed happily, scratching the Queen's eyeridge.
All right, darling. You will get food. I'll make sure it's the best. Lips curved and Salina stood, hand on Deoneth's head. When she stood, she looked different. She moved with a confidence that, a few days ago, she'd lost. And more. She looked radiant, happy. And as she moved away off the Sands with Deoneth, Dark Moon's new junior Queen, she looked right.

Andilay watched as the queen paused before each candidate, seeming to weigh her options. A twitch of the mouth when the queen scanned the crowd. Who was hers? Andilay had aways thought that dragons impressed in instinct. That something in them pulled them to their bonded. She also figured that hatching into a world you have never seen before may cause your instincts to need some recalibration time.
But the little golden one knew, and went to plop down in front of.... Salina. Andilay saw a bit of the rainbow swirls from her perspective of the impression. If she was honest with herself, she was a little sad, and disappointed. The queen was not hers, but Salina's.
Her mood lifted quickly though as she noticed the glow go back into the girl. She had seemed so weak and fragile; like if someone was to touch her to harshly she would break. Now, the girl was radiant, and Andilay did not mind basking in that glow of joy. If anything, it was what she had to look froward too.

Faine stared back at the golden dragon as it sat in front of her. It was an odd feeling, being looked over by such a young creature. The dragon turned away to inspect Andilay and Faine felt body relax slightly. Which was odd because she wasn’t even aware that she had been tense.
Her eyes were still on the golden dragon when a voice entered her head. She blinked, quite confused. It certainly wasn’t from the gold! She wasn’t quite sure what was going on. She raised her head so she could peer at the stands. In a matter of seconds her eyes found Relina. Oh! Okay, that made sense then. The message had been from Soranith! She flashed the pair a large, beaming smile. She was glad that she had befriended Relina and that the girl was breaking out of her shell. When she focused back on the Queen she realized that it was over.
Salina had Impressed.
She wasn’t disappointed. Nope, not her. There were tons of responsibilities that came with that dragon and Salina looked so…well, happy. She simply couldn’t feel bitter towards the girl even if she wanted too. She grinned, “Congratulations!” before winking slightly at Andilay.
“Next time we’ll rock the sands, right?”
