Aarora watched the Weyrling's and Candidate's crowd around, listening to the instructions given by Rhia. She stood alongside the women, her arms hanging loosely at her sides. She was taking in all the faces around her, wondering which ones she'd be in charge of. It felt weird, working with these teenagers all by herself, not that she hadn’t done it before, it’s just that back at High Reaches Weyr she’d known literally everyone. Now, here, she knew next to no one. The only Candidate she’d be introduced to was Seth, and that’s because she’d brought the lad here herself. No matter, this was a perfect opportunity to get to know some of them. When Rhia was done speaking she nodded to the Weyrling Master/Candidate Master, “Well, that’s that then. I’ll get these kids working, don’t you worry.” She went off in the direction of the South side of the Weyr bowl, waving an arm to those behind her that were meant to follow.
She was glancing back over her shoulder to make sure at least one or two had started after her. When she turned her head back around, a boy had popped up at her side. An immediate smile appeared on her face, and she reached a hand over to ruffle the boy’s hair. “Seth, you’re going to work hard, aren’t you sweetie?” He nodded, quickening his pace,
“Oh, you bet!” He didn’t seem to mind that his hair was now a bit of a mess, feeling close to the Assistant Candidate Master. She made him feel safe, and most importantly loved, so how could he not? She was like his part-time mother or something. He shook his head back and forth, knowing he had to focus on cleaning up now. He wanted to earn his keep as best he could. Everyone was taking part in this clean up, he’d never dare shirk his responsibilities, not now.
“I’m sure you’ll have most of the work done in no time,” she told him, watching him race off to pick up a piece of rubble. Her mouth turned down a bit, hoping that he’d be able to manage; he was only thirteen after all. Give the boy some credit Aar, she thought to herself, stopping once she’d gone far enough. She surveyed the area, wondering if anyone had any questions. She’d be right here if they did.
You’ve always been good with kids. Don’t think I haven’t noticed.
You always notice Rasth. She smiled sweetly, eyeing her dragon, who was still on the heights.
Its my job too, Rasth replied, her tone loving.
