hat are Whers?Whers are the creation of Wind Blossom Ping who was attempting to create even more magnificent dragons then Kitti Ping. The creatures that hatched were similar to dragons but still grotesquely different. Their hides are similar to dragons and come in the same shades of colors with their muscles hideously stretching out. Their wings are in fact functioning but are too small to be of use except for when temperatures dropped at night allowing the Whers to glide for a short amount of time. Whers are very sensitive to light therefore are considered nocturnal. Whers don’t see light but have infrared vision instead though their eyes will still churn with the basic mood-colors that dragons experience. Their noses are also highly sensitive.
When a Wher is fully grown they can grow to the size of a large herdbeast but size varies with the color of their hide. They are more or less all muscle and can weight between six and eight hundred pounds. Despite their bulk and the fact they only have two toes per foot Whers are very fast creatures.
Whers can not verbally communicate as well as dragons. At best they have a vocabulary that a small child will have. Words strung about, incomplete sentences and the like. Because of this their handlers can feel the emotions that they are feeling, an easier way to communicate.

her ImpressionsLike their dragon counterparts, Whers Impress at birth. They Impress to whoever feeds them when they are hatched until they are full. The people they Impress too will often cut themselves and allow the Wher to lick the blood. Lick, however, is the nice way to say it. Whers will often bite their bonded and drain blood from the open wound. It’s believed that this helps deepen the bond between the two and even prevents the Wher from attacking the handler later on in life.
Wher names always end in ‘sk’ and may have their name vaguely similar to incredibly close to their handler. It depends on how deep their connection is to one and another. A handler named Jilke may have a Wher named Jisk if they do not have a deep connection. However if a deep connection is there then the Wher may have the name Jilkesk. When the Wher is fully bonded they will become very protective of their partner. They will do anything and everything to protect said person even if it means killing another human.

uties of a WherWhers are often given few duties and these duties are not very glamorous ones. They are often used as the ‘guard dog’ of the Weyr.
They can be trained to recognize people of the Weyr or Hold they are in. Because of this they often keep watch and will make a loud sound to announce the presence of a stranger. Some people will train their Whers to directly attack any strangers that approach.
Mines are often on the list for Wher eggs. Since Whers have such sensitive noses they often work in mines and are used to sense bad air pockets below the ground. Because these creatures are also nocturnal, the lack of light in the mine doesn’t bother them at all and they are ideal workers.

her Mating andClutchesSince Whers have wings that can not support their bodies in the air for very long, they do not have any Flights. Instead they go into a Run which is more or less an on land version of a Flight. The male whers will chase after the female and the winner is the one who can successfully outrun her. The Run may also contain a bit of jumping and gliding also.
Wher eggs are not considered beautiful, differing from their dragon counterparts. They are not smooth but instead bumpy, dented and just look malformed in general. A Wher’s clutched may be anywhere between five to twenty with the lower numbers being far more common. A fair number of these eggs will not hatch at all, the Wher dead inside of it for a variety of reasons.
