It was a beautiful day to be outside and walking around the Weyr's territories, especially the lake, where cool breezes accentuated the pleasant heat of the sun overhead in the cloudless skies. Kestrel had taken this opportunity to walk along the beaches by herself, only her Golden flitt, Roksha, to accompany her. She'd have invited Hasima along, but she'd not been able to find her almost constant companion, and so had decided it was high time she spent a day on her own. She enjoyed solitude as much as she liked the company of a single friend. She wasn't one for groups, and so therefore single friend merely implied that she'd rather be with someone one on one than in a group.
Roksha had been acting a little strange as of late. She'd been a bit more snippish than usual, and had constantly been preening herself and making strange noises to herself, flying off without notice only to blink back into sight in the very next moment. Kestrel had been flustered by her flitt's behavior. She'd never seen Roksha act this way before, and hoped that the flitt was all right, but the creature had been eating normally, and other than the strange behavior she seemed all right. Kestrel had noted during an oiling a couple of days ago that Roksha's hide looked brighter. Today in the sunlight, the young firelizard seemed to almost glow, and she was sure that it simply meant that Roksha was in great health.
Roksha had her tail wrapped tightly around Kestrel's neck, her head resting down the side of her shoulder. The firelizard gave the appearance of being sleeping, though Kestrel knew she was merely resting, enjoying the weather as much as she was. She smiled and then walked over to a large boulder, sitting herself down with a content sigh. However, a moment after she sat down, Roksha shot up off her shoulder, giving an unnaturally loud shriek that caused Kestrel to nearly fall off of the boulder. She'd heard that sound once before, and immediately began panicking mildly. She was alone, there was no one else here. Likely, she was safe from any person who might own any of the local flitts. Likely, it would only be wild ones...but there was no doubt that Roksha's cry had been a challenge-she was rising in her first flight!
Ooc: Everyone feel free to join in with wild flitts, both Browns and Bronzes, or even flitts of your own! ^^

A bronze firelizard had been sunning himself on the rocks beside the lake. His eyes were closed as he feigned sleep but he was alert of his surroundings and would go between if anything startled him. The bronze had once belonged to the eldest son of a Lord Holder. He had been called Frye but within days of the impression the spoiled son had yelled at the flitter for tearing up a shirt. Startled, Frye had betweened it to this lake and here he had stayed for a turn or so never returning to the brat.
Frye’s eyes opened, whirling red, as Roksha let out her challenge. The bronze stretched like a feline before leaping into the air to follow the gold beauty. This was not the first time he had risen to a queen’s challenge, he had tried to fly many a wild queen and green but never before had he been the one to catch them. Perhaps this would be the first.

As it turned out, it seemed that Frye was not the only fire lizard who was sunning himself by the lake. Sprawled out lazily in the grass nearby, a sleepy-looking flitt seemed quite content with the way he was spending the day. In all actuality, the brown fire lizard was a rather scrawny looking thing. He had never belonged to anyone and actually had very little contact with anyone that wasn't a fire lizard. Once or twice he would pop out of nowhere near a dragon and stayed for a few minutes, but that was about it.
Soon as he heard Roksha's cries, his head snapped upwards. Even though he wasn't the fastest thing, he had the delusional that he could easily catch the gold flitt. Eyes viciously whirled red as he pushed himself off of the ground, twisting his body as he pumped his wings up into the air. He cried back to the Queen, hardly noting the other fire lizard that had also heard the Queen's cry.

Birinj leapt from Christae's shoulder as she was writing in the Weyr ledger. Rhia had given her a list of Candidates and she was entering them into the Weyr's ledgers. Christae was startled as his talons digged into her shoulder. She was glad for the wher-hide padding that she had put on her tunic just for that purpose. The little bronze had been quite excitable when he was younger but Thank Faranth he had calmed in the few Turns she had had him. For him to take off so suddenly from a seemingly relaxed sleep, something had to be amiss. She walked to the door of her bowl-level office beneath her weyr and looked to see what was up.
One of the Candidates has a flitt that is having her mating flight. Kaith said idly. Christae sighed, she should have recognized the mixed emotions flowing from her bond with the little flitt. She was only glad that the resulting emotions were a lot less intense than those of a dragon's mating flight. She hoped that Rhia had warned the Candidates of what would happen if they became or got someone pregnant.
Birinj completely forgot about his mistress as he flew out to the lake to find his golden beauty. She was gorgeous. The sun did not hold a candle to her shining golden hide. He bugled his intentions to her and the other males. He would have her. He crooned silly love-nonsences to her as he flew towards her.

A young Bronze flitt was enjoying the beautiful day, the sun glistening on his hide well he dove low over the lake-his wingtips dipping in to the water. Small ripples formed on the water's surface where he came in contact with the clear liquid. He hadn't at all been expecting the loud cry coming from the Golden Queen Roksha. He did a graceful one-eighty turn and pumped his wings, bringing himself closer and closer to where he saw her off in the distance. He crooned to her, his eyes whirring a purple lust. He ignored all the other pursuers, focusing on no one else but her; she was the object of his desire. Her beauty made him gather go ever onwards to where she was. He'd show the other flitts what a real Bronze was capable of!
He had only been in one flight prior to this, a Green flight, and he had not been the successor-rather a flighty Blue had. He hadn't made much sense of this, perhaps the Green simply preferred the Blue to him. He pushed these thoughts from his mind, the Green could not compare to what was now before his eyes. He'd do most anything to get to her, to have her as his own.

Roksha gave a gleeful sounding bugle as the first of her chasers appeared within her view. It was a bronze, and this pleased the little Queen greatly, for she liked bronzes very much indeed! Then as another and yet another joined in, making their advances upon her, she shot out into the trees like a little golden bullet, Kestrel's eyes barely able to follow her swift motions. Kestrel felt a bit woozy, and there was a sort of slow heated feeling rising through her blood. She gave a shiver, though not all too unpleasant, for though Roksha was not a dragon, the pair had a very close bond with one another and Kestrel had never experienced a flight of any kind before. She had to sit down for she was momentarily dizzy, and she looked around in a half-dazed stupor, looking for where Roksha had gone.
There were now three bronzes and a brown, and though the brown wasn't much to look at, he was still a contender and she still took pride in each of the flitts that had come to pursue her. She was feeling defiant and powerful, as her form cut through the air like a knife through butter. She wanted her first flighting to be a good one, and she would not give in easily to the croons and persuasions of her pursuers! Instead she issued forth a challenging cry, that seemed to say 'catch me if you think you can'! For all of Pern, that was precisely what it meant! She decided she would see which male took her fancy as the flight progressed, and there was something to be said for the brave little brown who dared try for her, a Queen worthy of many bronzes! So, as she darted away, she gave him a small bugle of encouragement, for any who pursued her was welcome, be they bronze or brown, however, not just any would be the victor!

Frye hissed at the other pursuers of Roksha, this Queen was his. The little bronze trailed the Queen into the tress only to be slowed down as he avoided the thick branches. He was stalled a bit by the branches of the tree but soon maneuvered his way back to close on Roksha’s golden tail. He sent a soft creel in her direction and pumped his wings harder to show that he was more than worthy of the Queen. The little firelizard’s eyes whirled faster as the flight continued. Never did his eyes stray from his prize even as the other firelizards were even with him in their chase for the Queen.
((Ack, short...))

The Bronze ignored Frye's hiss, watching the Bronze fall back as he attempted to successfully dodge the trees. This Bronze followed Roksha's swift motions, well a bit behind her since she was quite the speedy creature indeed! This didn't deter him although, if anything it made him more determined to catch her. Once the trees were farther and few between he glided underneath her, still feeling as if he had plenty of energy to spare. He responded to Roksha's challenge with a gentle croon, his eyes whirring faster. He continued to ignore all the others, not seeing them fit to compete with him! He knew that she wouldn't give up-not so early on anyways. He didn't chance it by making any sort of unwise move to anger her. He simply flew along with her, letting her know that he'd not let her leave his sight. When she was ready to end her games then he'd chance making a move. He flew around her, doing twists and spins to try and catch her eye; to try and entice her.
He rarely gave up, priding in himself for being both a good winner and loser. He knew he wouldn't recover so easily if he lost her, he had to prove himself, and he just had to. In his mind his life would only be bettered with her in it. Her magnificent golden hide only dragged more croons from his vocals, liking very much what he saw.

The brown flitt pumped his wings, trying to race the others in order to reach the Queen. He flew through the tree, but even though he was small he didn’t exactly have the best steering and ended up running into a number of branches. He tumbled downwards for a few seconds as he collided with a larger branch before correcting himself and moving out of the tree. It was pretty obvious the poor flitt stood no chance. He was a rather small brown while the others were big bronzes, and deep down he knew this. Of course he was to stubborn to admit this and kept going, dead last in the flight. He wailed sweet nothings towards the Queen, thinking that maybe that would make her choose him over all the other flitts. Which in reality, seemed pretty impossible.

Birinj knew that Frye was out of his league so he simply puffed his bronze chest up and crooned to the queen. He didn't bother to hide his contempt towards the wild ones. He was a haughty thing when he wanted to be. He spiraled in the air as he persued her, showing off his wingspan and gleaming hide. His mistress's little son Chiron loved to play with oil and the WW had just put that to constructive use. Kaith didn't complain about the patches of oil and oily handprints on her hide but Birinj was glad now that the child could reach all of him. He didn't want his hide to be patchy for his beautiful little queen.

Roksha could sense that one of her pursuers was falling very behind, and that two of the bronzes were closer to her than the third. All of a sudden, she shot up straight into the skies overhead, and shot back the way she'd come from, back towards the lake. She skimmed over the treetops, every now and then diving back into the branches and shooting to the left or right, so that her pursuers wouldn't know where she'd come up next. She took pride in her speed and agility, for a queen she was fast as well as having great stamina. She could hear the bronzes crooning to her, and listened to their tones with interest, for she liked a bronze who could croon well to her. She espied Birinj, and then the wild young bronze. She fancied them both at the moment, and began to wonder who wished to catch her more, who would manage to impress her enough to have her allow them to win. For in the end, she had no doubt that it was her choice. She was the fastest, the strongest, the most agile!
She liked the way Birinj and the other bronze were crooning, liked the way her three bronze competitors were trying so hard. However, she wondered if the third would lose her, seeing as how he'd had more problems with pursuing her through the trees than the other two. However, she'd only just begun, there was more than enough time for Frye to catch up with the other two.

The young Bronze's determination was not spoiled when Roksha sneakily starting speeding back the way she had come before making many a manoeuvre through the trees. He called out to her his compliments, her agility impressing him very much! A tinge of red was added to his eyes when he realized that Birinj was close as well. He kept above, doing an array of fancy spirals, coming around close to her every time she came out of the trees. His croons didn't cease, for he was singing his heart out to her. He rumbled amusedly while watching her, thinking that all the flitts in the chase could learn a thing or two from the way she performed in flight!
His wingtip nearly skimmed the top of one of the trees, and his heartbeat picked up; having thought he was going to crash. He shook his head back and forth, picking up speed. He flew right behind Roksha, coming up alongside her to confess more of his undying love for her. He knew how crushed he’d be if he didn’t win.

Frye followed Raska in her loop back. Seeing that she was going through the trees again and that one of the other bronzes was heading over the trees he went lower, to avoid the bulk of the branches. The height he was flying meant he only had to deal with the tree trunks and a rogue branch. However, he watched as Roksha was teasing the bronzes above the trees by appearing from the growth every now and then. Above the trees was definitely a better place to be.
With a creel he tucked his limbs closer to his body as he sped upwards bursting through the canopy ripping leaves along the way. It was a dumb maneuver to go under the trees and he had already been falling behind and was even more behind now. The bronze hurried to the last spot where Roksha had come up. Frye was not going to give up just yet.

Birinj bugled as his Queen dropped out of sight in the tops of the skybroom trees that grew so tall in the humid Southern weather. He wanted to keep her in his sights always! He didn't want some unworthy creature to touch her glorious hide. He tucked in his gleaming wings and dove down to try to find her. He stayed just above the tree tops looking for the slightest glint of her gleaming golden self. He saw that she was dodging from side to side. She was so clever, his beauty, but he would be cleverer. He stayed about in the middle of her darting, reserving his energy so that when she rose again he would be able to put on a burst of speed and catch her. He trilled in anticipation and then crooned to his love again. She was the most gorgeous of Queens, not even the great golden dragons Queen of the Weyr compared to her beauty.

Finally the golden queen cleared the tops of the trees, diving down towards the lake in a graceful downwards arc, and then, tucking her wings against her body tightly, tail and body streamlining, she dove down into the cool depths of the lake, if only for a moment before she shot back out of the waters in a spray of droplets, gleaming golden reflections off of her glowing hide. Her long flight through and atop the trees had indeed taken their toll, but she wasn't ready to give in just yet!
The lake waters refreshed and cooled her lithe body, and she skimmed over the surface of the lake, so close to the water that she might have touched a wing, claw or tail tip to the surface at any time, marring the smooth waters underneath where she flew. Her reflection shimmered back at her when she chanced to look downwards, glancing once behind her now to see how close her pursuers were. Well, the third bronze had dropped far behind compared to the other two, and she couldn't see the brown anywhere in sight. She had not thought he'd last long, but she was a tad disappointed her third bronze contender was seemingly faltering in the pursuit. Well, no matter! Only the swiftest, cleverest and most agile bronze would win her today!
She was surprised at how close the flitt who was owned by someone in the Weyr was drawing, and sped up in an effort to shake him and the second bronze who was also quite close off. She darted out across the lake, not looking back, and therefore not sure how close the pair were now. With this new burst of speed she was giving a final display of her efforts to lose them, for she was almost ready to make a choice. Her flight had been a good one, and she decided to finish it off as wonderfully as it had started. So, with a burst of reserved speed and strength, she suddenly shot straight up into the air, climbing higher and higher still, her powerful wings propelling her as high as she could go. This would decide it, if either of the bronzes managed to find the strength to climb after her into the skies. She didn't look down, or back to see which would follow-she knew one or both would, they looked fine bronzes indeed! So, with another challenging cry to them, she kept climbing. She was aiming for the clouds themselves, though with each pump of her wings she could feel herself tiring.

Birinj didn't follow his Queen as she dove into the water. He knew she would surface soon, glistening with a sheen of water that made her golden hide shine even more than it already did, if that was possible.
Oh but she was glorious! She was a beauty that was rivaled by none, and so clever. He continued to croon loudly. He was tiring, but he could see that she was as well. He was still strong. His mistress often sent him on errands and he had built up his strength over the three or four Turns of his life. He was determined to win her. No other bronze was worthy of her fairness.
Birinj chirped in dismay as she put on a burst of speed and began to climb skyward. His golden beauty still did not see that he was the only one worthy of her. The bronze knew that he must not lose hope. Somehow he would convince her that he was the only one worthy. He follwed her skywards, pumping his wings furiously to catch up to her. He only hoped the flight didn't continue for much longer because he was using up his reserves of energy to fly quickly after her.

Frye swooped down towards the lake following his Queen. Though, it was looking more and more like one of the other two bronzes would be the one to catch her. He pushed forward with his last burst of speed. As Roksha dove into the lake he skimmed the surface letting his tail and legs brush the top of the water. The golden queen was still beneath the water when Frye dipped too far down into the water. He flipped forward into the water with an incredibly big splash for such a small creature. It was a few moments before he reappeared on the surface of the water, eyes following his lost prize. He creeled to her as he rose out of the water but it was all over. He was a young bronze, he hadn’t caught this queen but that would not stop him from chasing many others in the future. In an instant he was gone, betweened to another beach, far away.

Birinj bugled in triumph as yet another flitt dropped out of the flight. Frye was one less bronze that he had to worry about trying to claim his beauty.
OOC: don't worry about me Kestrel. I'll be able to check in a bit more than I thought.

The young Bronze kept on her, in pursuit of his truest desire. He watched her when she dove down in to the water, she having come up rather quickly, especially since he had been so close by. The spray of the water was now glistening on his hide as well. He crooned out to her as she shot up through the skies, realizing that he too was finding his energy not so plentiful as it had been. He didn't hesitate to follow her, knowing that he had to prove himself. She was all he had, the only company to keep him from retreating to a life of loneliness once more. His croons filled the air as he attempted to raise the volume over Birinj, following behind Roksha with his tail lashing out from side to side. He didn't hold back, going as fast as his wings permitted him.
He pulled his wings in to his sides some so that he'd shoot up at a more rapid pace, close in behind her. He wished to catch her oh so badly! He didn't pay any attention to Birinj but creeled a sort-of short lived victory when he noticed that Frye had gone. He knew that the flitt hadn't been as stealthy as him, oh no, that was surely it! He also didn't see the brown near by either, which gave him even more confidence now that he had only one more competitor to contend with. Did he really have a chance of winning?

Everything might have worked out in the younger Bronze's favor, who knew who might have caught her if it wasn't for the interference of a much larger creature. A dragon suddenly blinked out of between over the lake-over the Golden flitt who was caught so much by surprise that her descent skywards was halted completely, and she gave a shriek of frustration as she had to suddenly back-wing, causing what happened next to occur.
Birinj had been the closest pursuer thus far, and since he was climbing upwards after her, she, having stopped completely dead-and in fact even taking a stride in the air backwards-had him suddenly crash into her. In all fairness, he'd technically been the one to catch her, and she didn't find that she minded overmuch. The flight had been very good for a first one, and she crooned to the older Bronze who had won her, twining her tail with his.
Ooc: ^^ Yay Birinj, and thanks to those who participated.
