R'dal had just finished some errands and decided to walk out to this lake he had heard so much about. Why not see it? He was one to admire natural beauty and besides that Nira and himself had good memories of their first meeting at a lake, it was at another weyr ofcourse but it was a lake. He looked over it, it was indeed something to behold. He was not up for swimming or anything but just looking out over it. He heard of some of the things that happened at this lake. It seemed a focal point of the weyr. He rested near the lake. He removed his boots and allowed the waters edge to lap at his feet. He gave a sigh as he reminised over old memories and even some newer ones.

A young girl, well actually it looked like a boy, headed for the lake. She expected it to be empty around now and really needed a break from the bustle of Weyr life. She didn't think she would be working this much or this hard, and she was only a candidate. A slender hand wiped her slightly sweaty forehead.
She would've washed up but all of the washing tubs (I forgot what they are called) were filled up by other boys. How difficult this was! It was much easier to pretend to be male when she was back with the group. Then again, it probably wasn't as dangerous to be exposed in the Weyr, then back with the renegades. It couldn't be, because her father's friends would kill her. There was nothing more dangerous than death.
Hali finally came into view of the lake. At first glance it seemed empty, but she then caught sight of another. She didn't recognize the man, so it must have been one of the riders. She sighed, because she was hoping to be alone. She was thinking about turning and leaving, but if the man had seen her, he would think she was trying to evade him or something and that was rude. Instead she walked toward the unfamiliar man. He was much larger than Hali, but she was still a teen, so she could just be mistaken for a lanky boy or something. Besides, not all men had muscles.
"Umm...hi." Hali said in the boy's voice she had been practicing with her father before she was taken here. She sometimes still practiced when she was alone, but had no one to tell her if she was doing it right.

R'dal hadn't noticed the lad as he approached. "Oh hello there. My name is R'dal of brown Elith. Who might you be young lad?", he asked him, outstretching his hand to shake his and smiled. R'dal always had time to meet and greet others. He was a social, hearty man who enjoyed life.

"I am Kalor, a new candidate." Hali replied respectfully. She bowed slightly as she spoke. Even though she hadn't heard much about dragon-riders, she knew they protected the land by destroying thread. Well, that was what she had heard anyways. She had never seen thread, neither had her father.
She looked wearily at his hand before extending her own. She shook it lightly before taking it back. "What are you doing?" She asked, noticing that he was alone. She knew it might be a rude question, but R'dal seemed like a nice enough man.

"Just thinking", he replied to her. He looked over the lake then replied, "I heard so many good things about this place and all the events that took place here. Social gathers, falling in love, first kisses, people meeting for the first time. I decided to check it out, see what made this such a focal point of the weyr. I felt like reminising and it just seemed this infamous lake was the spot", he said. "And what brings you here? Surely you came here for more than to just chat it up with some old giant like me", he said with a laugh.

Hali blushed lightly when the man mentioned falling in love and first kisses. It had never occurred to her, until now, that under disguise that could never happen with her. Even if she fell in love with someone, there was no way they would return the love, unless they were secretly gay.
She then realized that R'dal had asked her a question. "Uhh...just a little tired. I thought I would just rest here a bit." Hali realized she was still standing. She sat down next to R'dal, but kept her boots on. "If you don't mind." She said quickly.

"Oh I don't mind a bit. I've had quite a day today myself", he said. He paused then asked, "You seemed distracted. Is something wrong? Something you need to get off your chest or something", he asked her, not realizing how much of a pun that really was as he thought this candidate really was a boy, but in all actuality this candidate was a girl pretending to be a boy and did a good job of it too as R'dal didn't suspect for a moment.

Hali looked at R'dal. Oh yes. These bandages are quite itchy. She joked with herself. "Nothing is wrong." She replied simply. "I was just thinking about...my family." She said after a short pause. "You know, just wondering about how my father is doing, and what he is doing." She said distantly, as if falling into a memory.

"Ah. I have often seen many a candidate reminising about their family. So you were close to your father? What about the rest of your family? Your mother or siblings?", he asked her.

"I don't have any sibling. And my mother..." Hali paused. ..was murdered by my father's friends and are threatening to kill me too if they discover I am female! She practically shouted in her head, but her face remained calm. "My mother passed away, while I was young." She said, her voice was calm and unwavering. "Do you have any family? I mean, I know you can get separated from family," Hali paused and coughed because her voice had faltered, "when you become a rider." She continued.

"Oh sorry to hear that. Well atleast you still had your father", he said to her. "Me? Yes I have family. They train runners, all of them alive and well. But I have a new family now. I have my weyrmate Nira and her dragon and a dragon of my own. The brown Elith", he said to her. "Have you met Nira?", he asked her.

Hali was about to shake her head no, but she caught herself. "Once, but it was very brief. She searched me, but had to leave quickly." Hali explained. She didn't really think the woman had a Weyrmate. Actually, she considered very little abou the woman when they first met.
((I will add more later.))
