Character:
Name: Exarin (Ex- are- in)
Age: Twenty Two Turns
Gender: Male
Sexuality: Heterosexual
Rank: Tunnelcat Handler for Dark Moon Weyr
Appearance:
It would be hard to sum up Exarin’s in one word but if you had too then there was a good chance that the word you would choose is ‘awkward’ or ‘lanky’. He’s a taller fellow; he had a growth spurt at a young age and at twelve turns he was already 5’6. He finished growing at sixteen turns, a lengthy 5’11. He was comfortable with his height; he simply liked the view up there. Short people were stuck staring at the back of people’s heads but not him! He could happily peer over others. Perhaps his height wouldn’t be so noticeable if he was a bigger man but Exarin was anything but.
Exarin was definitely considered to be svelte. He was no dragonrider, he didn’t have the same amount of muscles as them. Actually, he was pretty sure he didn’t really have any muscles at all. His job title didn’t involve any heavy lifting so if he flexed for you, you wouldn’t see very much. He actually had the tendency to simply forget that he should eat. Exarin was often seeing moving about; following his tunnelcats and such – he was practically burning calories that simply didn’t exist. He’s accepted the fact that his weight and height don’t exactly match one and another and simply says he ‘owns the skinny look’.
His eyes were an unusual color – a cloudy blue. Actually, maybe they weren’t all that unusual considering that he was blind. Originally he was born with nice, deep blue eyes but as he grew older his vision grew worse. His cataracts eventually took over and he lost all his sight, causing his eyes to become milky. He does have the unnerving habit of keeping his eyes open because he was originally born with vision – keeping his eyes open was what he was used too. Exarin will often just stare in front of him, creeping quite a few people out. Every now and then he will realize that it’s probably eerie to see him just staring and he’ll remember to keep his eyes shut.
The handler’s hair is a simple brunette color and nothing overly exciting, to be honest. His haircut is a rather funny thing – it’s rather choppy and all over the place considering he cuts it himself if he can’t find someone to do it for him. Hair cutting is a tricky thing when you’re blind.
Personality:
Exarin is the type of guy that likes to push his limits. It was funny because when he was younger, he was so cautious – making sure he never fell and scraped his knee or anything like that. It was when he became blind that he started taking more chances. He didn’t like being held back by his lack of vision; he tested to see how far he could go. He had the annoyingly optimistic view of ‘If there’s a wall in your way, break it down’.
However, this doesn’t necessarily apply to everything. When he meets someone new, he still acts a bit hesitant. It’s nothing personal – he’s just had one too many people lead him somewhere unknown and then ditch him. People would take bets to see if he would find his way back or not. Exarin never really did anything about it since he was not the type to be all for confrontation. He was certainly not a fighter - his thin wrists would probably break if he managed to hit someone. He has the typical nuturing personality. You need to have it when you’re raised with two tunnelcat breeders and a bunch of younger siblings. He’s a sucker for little kids and for any sort of animal, he wouldn’t deny it if you ask him. He often wonders if he likes them more than adults because they don’t take that pitying ‘Oh, you’re blind’ tone with him. It’s the little things like that he appreciates.
He’s generally a happy person – telling stories and cracking jokes. He has no problem poking fun at himself and is blissfully unaware of any awkward situations it causes when he makes a blind joke. People rarely know if they should laugh or not. He’s a rather touchy-feely guy; he relies on his other senses so it’s not uncommon for him to lay a hand on your arm. Every now and then he’ll ask if he can touch someone’s face so he could at least try to picture what they looked like.
In all though, he’s your typical ready to have fun twenty year old boy.
History:
Exarin’s parents have that sickly sweet and sappy tale of how they met; they were both born and raised at Lokan Hold and grew up as best friends. Eventually over time they simply fell in love with each other and their family began. Exarin actually wasn’t a fan of that story, protesting that people can’t have such a perfect life like that one. He claimed that it painted an unrealistic dream for people. His parents just told him to shut up when he said things like that.
Exarin was born a turn after his parents got together and was the first born. Over the next few turns it seemed like babies were coming out of nowhere. By the time his parents finally agreed to stop having kids, they were a family of six. However, his parents were the kind of people who liked taking care of others and watching them grow. Instead of breaking their promise not to have any more kids, they turned to animals. Almost immediately the pair became tunnelcat breeders, everyone in the family helping out to take care of the little critters. Life was good for Exarin, it was as simple as that.
When he was six turns old, his vision began to become a little fuzzy. That was the beginning of it all; every turn after that it just got worse and worse until it simply disappeared altogether at the age of twelve. The cause was cataracts – an unusual thing to see in someone so young. It took Exarin two turns to accept the fact that he wasn’t ever going to see again. In those two turns he was dependant on everyone – he always had to have someone by his side. He finally grew sick of it though – he didn’t want to be rely on his parents all of his life. He eventually took over, trying to memorize every twist and turn inside Lokan Hold so he could navigate his way through it.
Things took an interesting turn over time though. The tunnelcats that his family raised seemed to be suddenly aware that something was different about Exarin which gave his parents an idea. It took a while but eventually the tunnelcats were trained to become a guide for the boy – their squeaks and chirps would tell him if he was going to walk into a wall or anything. He could follow their voices and know that he wouldn’t fall down any stairs. It was an interesting connection between tunnelcats and Exarin that started his optimistic personality of succeeding at everything.
At nineteen Turns he wanted to test his limits. His parent’s tunnelcats had a litter and he received two of the kits to be his new guides. Exarin packed up his bags and the three went to a bigger hold – Kalanre Hold. It posed a bigger challenge, it was a whole new layout to memorize and adapt too. It took longer than Exarin would have looked but they managed it. With that accomplished, he was now looking for something bigger and better. Exarin set his eyes (Haha) on Dark Moon Weyr. He had heard a rumor about some tunnelsnakes becoming out of control there and realized that maybe he could help out with that. His helpful duo were quite the tunnelsnake catchers, you see.
A turn after moving to Kalanre, Exarin was leaving it. His destination was Dark Moon with transfer papers in hand and tunnelcats at his feet.
Family: Rinar – Father
Kalexa – Mother
Xandra – Daughter – Second oldest
Lerina – Daughter – Third oldest
Arka – Daughter - youngest
Pets:
Name: Lirea (Leer- Ah)
Gender: Female
Age: Two Turns
Species: Tunnelcat (Ferret)
Appearance: Lirea has longer fur than most tunnelcats – giving her a rather feminine appearance. Or at least as feminine as a tunnelcat can look. Her fur is mostly white, everything except for her legs and one tip of the ear. She doesn’t have that infamous mask that most others have, but instead has black legs that makes it look like she’s wearing boots. The top of her right ear is also black. She’s a small tunnelcat, just a little bit over one foot and is a rather skinny thing.
Description: Between her and Tiano, she’s the more dominant one of the group. She has no problem bossing the other tunnelcat around or nipping at him slightly when he goes off on his own. In terms of Exarin, she’s the mother figure. She’ll make sure that the lad doesn’t run into anything, running in front of him and chirping. She’ll even brush herself against his legs in order to steer him in the right direction.
Name: Tiano (Tee-an-oh)
Gender: Male
Age: Two Turns
Species: Tunnelcat (Ferret)
Appearance: Tiano looks more like your stereotypical tunnelcat. He has shorter, coarse hair compared to Lirea. His face is painted with the dark brown mask that circles his black eyes. The top of his head is brown, which extends to his mid-back. His lower back is all white except for his two back legs, which have the brown boots that are similar to Lirea’s.
Description: Tiano understands that they are guiding Exarin and loves doing his task but he also gets distracted fairly easily. He can’t help it; he’ll be chittering away at his owner and then will be running off to go examine what that thing in the corner is. He’s quite loyal to Exarin and is smitten by Lirea and her tough-love ways. He’ll always try to fight off anything that’s threatening to the other tunnelcat but it’s normally Lirea who chases the ‘enemy’ off.
