Akum WeyrOn a planet, not that far way from the world of Pern, there once was a thriving society of human beings who had the ability to harness electricity. Though this world could sustain life in many of it's aspects, this world was nothing like the lush and beautiful world of Pern. This world, which was known as Akum, was almost the complete opposite of Pern in fact. Built a planet to harvest metals and electricity, Akum had very few forest lands and greenery. With most plant life growing in green houses and gases floating in the air, do to the power plants and such, Akum slowly started to slip into a state of global warming.
It was not long at all before the Scientists realized what was accuring on their planet and they quickly tried to think of a way to save the world that they called home. It did not take long at all before the planet itself made up it's mind for them and it choose destruction. Slowly, the world known as Akum started to freeze around it's great cities of metal and glass. Starting at the southern polar cap and spreading up words, the unnatural ice, that could not be melted by any means the Akumese new, creep up and around buildings, freeze the waters, and made the very air freeze. Snow storms became frequent in all the cities, that had not been eaten up by the icy by the first egg the world of Akum had become, and slowly the Akumese started to die off one by one, whether it be from getting caught in the ice or getting caught in the snow storms.
The world seemed to be lost to all and the destruction of the Akumese seemed to be unavoidable. At least, that was until something very unexpected accrued. Falling from the sky like meteors to the earth, twenty small objects hit the icy grounds all over Akum and the ice slowly started to melt around them. Not sure what to make of these new happenings, a group of Akumese scientists left the safety and warmth of their homes and started out towards where the objects had fallen in their prospective areas of the planet.

On arriving at the area where the object had fallen, the scientist, Uleon, was surprised to see what seemed to be light blue flames the shape of a large egg or stone, laying on the ground before him. But as he got closer to the object he realized they were not flames at all, but a solid object. Reaching down to pick up the object with his bare hands. He pulled back with a yelp of pain as the smell of burning flesh filled the air. Slowly the object started to rock on the now muddy ground beneath it and a bright glow started to emanate from the object. Suddenly the object stopped rocking, laid still for a moment, then exploded sending shards every which direction. But that was not the only thing that exploded out of the object, with a loud cry a small bird like creature, that seemed to be made out of blue flame, soared through the shards and into the air. Thus the first Fire-Bird of Akum was born.
It was after that time, the people that impressed to these creatures, /tried/ to fix their planet. But there where too many people that did not have the wonderful creatures. The planet slowly slid into destruction and the only option seemed to be to leaving the plant. It was then that the twenty that had impressed, and the ten that had impressed after the Gold Fire-Bird clutched, left Akum. They used what was left of their science, and found a way through the Oort Cloud, and made their way to pern. When they landed, the thirty people found themselves at a abandoned Weyr.
At first they knew not what they where getting themselves into when they sought shelter there. It was nearly two turns of living in that desolate sea side Weyr, when the Golden Dragoness, Aalynth, appeared on the Horizon. The Akumites didn't know what was happening, but when the Queen Dragon and her Rider, Ashlyn, started a Weyr there the Akumites where accepted into the Weyr. The dragon and the fire-birds seemed to get along and when it came time for the Queen Dragon to lay her clutch, she lay them along side the clutches of the fire-birds.
Thus Akum Weyr flourished, and the age of Fire-Birds began. But all was not good, for the DragonRiders of Akum Weyr, did not train for thread fall as they should. They believed it was gone for good, but they didn't know how wrong they where. Thread fell, and fell, and it decimated the Weyrs dragon population. A odd plague that killed winged beasts swept through the weyr, and this lowered the numbers even more. With many deaths of fire-birds, dragons, and watch-whers, the weyr found themselves loosing hope that the weyr would survive.
Their aging queen, Myndith, rose her last, and laid one last clutch. A golden egg lay in those lovely folds, and twenty other eggs. The clutched seemed healthy and hope returned with it’s coming. Thank the first egg, when the queen egg hatched, and so did all twenty of the other eggs. All impressed, filling the weyr with the Bronzes, Browns, Blues, and Greens it needed. But little did they know, thread was returning, and the young dragons where not equipped for such a thing. The last fighting wing of Akum took flight against thread, and perished. Leaving only the aging Weyrling Master, his dragon, and the twenty-one weyrlings.
All hope was seemed to be lost once again, the weyr was likely to fall into ruin. But that was until the most unusual sight came to the remaining people with in the weyr and the holds. A large dragon sized White Fire-bird flew through the air and ate the thread before it could fall upon the weyr and it’s holds. After her defeat of the thread, she went to the hatching sands of Akum Weyr and laid the largest clutch in the history of the Fire-birds. Then her glow started to dim rapidly and the White busted into ash, landing upon her fifty newly clutched eggs and those that had been observing the happenings.
The weyr and the holds mourned the dead, but slowly started to piece things back together again. The weyrling master took up both the training of the weyrlings and took charge of the weyr without question, even though he himself was suffering looses of his own. This had only been planned to be a temporary thing for him. Just until Iliana was ready to take up her position and a weyrleader was chosen. Two turns came and went without a sign of thread and the weyrlings were now considered full dragonriders. Everything seemed to be going well other then the fact that the only remaining gold in the weyr had not risen for her maiden flight yet and the weyr seemed all to empty. The weyr waited in anticipation for the gold to rise and produce a clutch to help make the weyrs stronger.
But before Dyamoth could take her maiden flight, two new transfers came to the weyr and excitement came with their coming. These two transfers were surprisingly both Whiteriders and even more surprising, one was male and one was female. But that wasn’t the only oddity about this pair of transfers. The real odd thing about them was that the female White was egg heavy. With this knowledge, search riders were sent to find new candidates for the eggs that would come from the white and the two white riders were gifted with temporary leadership over the Weyr and not long after the arrival of the transfers, White Hopeth went to the hatching sands and laid a clutch of ten eggs. The Weyr was in high spirits with the dragon clutch laying beside the Fire-bird eggs once again.
Soon it was time for the hatching of Hopeth‘s clutch. The Weyr was filled with the humming of dragons as the eggs began to shake and crack. The stands quickly started to fill with the bystanders and the dragon ledges started to accumulate dragons upon them. The candidates walked out on to the sands, showed their respects to the clutch mother and waited in there lines for the hatchlings to inspect them. Finally the first shell fell from the first hatchling to revile a Brown hatchling. A good sign if not the best. Things seemed to be going well. Until a very odd looking blue dragon tumbled out of one of the eggs. But this was no ordinary blue dragon. The first thing they noticed was the odd swirls of silver all across it‘s hide. The next thing they noticed was that the dragon was indeed a female which no blue dragon was.
This was not the only odd dragon in this clutch though. Two other odd dragons hatched from this clutch. The second oddity to hatch was the most shocking of all of, what they have come to call, mutations. Hatching from the biggest egg in the clutch, this large hatchling was a surprising mixture of black and purple. It’s main base being as black as the darkest night and the inner membrane of it’s wings were a drak purple. This dragon also had swirls on it, but they were not silver like his odd clutch sister’s. These swirls were the same purple as the under membrane of it’s wings. The final difference of this mutation was a long purple mane that stretched from the top of it’s head to about two-thirds down it’s neck. The third to hatch seemed to be nothing more then a white at first glance, but taking a closer look at it, this dragon shared the silver swirls that the blue had. Another thing that was noticeable about this female hatchling was it‘s size. Being quite a bit bigger then a white hatchling and with no need in help with it‘s hatching, it was obvious this was no ordinary white.
Not sure what to make of these new dragons, the Weyr recognized them as new types of dragons and they were given the names of Celestial, Eclipse, and Lunar. The Weyr quickly accepted the mutated dragons and decided to watch them closely as they grew. A harper was assigned to make records of these dragons with the help of the dragons‘ life partners. It was about this time when the fire-bird eggs on the hatching sands started to hum when certain people walked near them. With no recorded information on such a thing, the people that noticed this happening just ignored it. That is, until a curious Weyrbrat got a little to big for his trousers and decided he wanted a better look at the flame looking eggs upon the sands. The child waited until the watch was distracted and advanced upon the eggs.
It was as he neared the eggs at a humming seemed to emanate from one or more of the eggs. Curious as children are, the weyrbrat walked over to one of the humming eggs and poked it with the tip of his finger. Once the weyrbrat touch the egg, the weyrbrat, surprised by the burning sensation that had filled his finger on touching the egg, jumped away from the egg with a cry of painful surprise. It was at that moment that the watchman‘s attention was grabbed. But it was already to late. The egg the child had touched started to glow brightly and shake. Then it went emotionless and dull for only a moment. The next moment, the egg exploded sending shards and a bright light flying in every direction. Then, from the light came a bright gold flaming bird. The first hatchling from the enormous clutch of fire-bird eggs. Once they realized what the humming meant and that the Fire-birds were indeed ready to hatch, two fire-bird eggs were carefully sent to each of the Holds as a gift of good faith. After this, five more people with in the Weyr impressed to these creatures leaving twenty-five fire-birds on the sands.
Many interesting events had started happening with in the weyr sense the arrival of the Whiteriders in the weyr, but the weyr was still to empty to be a true defense against thread and the hope to change that came with Gold Dyamoth and her maiden flight which had still yet to happen. The people started to worry that something was wrong with the young queen dragon. But this fear seemed to be nothing more then that as the radiantly glowing took to the air for her maiden flight. Having few dragons capable of chasing the queen, it was thought that the flight would be fast, but the queen wouldn‘t have that. She flew her chasers hard and in the end choose Bronze Tarnith to be her mate.
With the two new leaders of the weyr getting used to their new positions, the weyr waited to see what kind of leaders they would be. But has time went by, time for Dyamoth clutching came nearer and nearer. Finally the day came when the queen dragon took to the sands and laid a clutch of fourteen eggs which all seemed to contain life with in them. There was no queen egg within this clutch, but this was not a disappoint meant do to the weyrs greater need for fighting dragons. The people couldn't have been more pleased with the Gold's first clutch.
However, with such a small clutch, the Holds that tithed to Akum Weyr began to fear that the weyrs fighting power was not strong enough to fight the threat of thread. Even with the assistance of the fire-birds. With this, doubt started to grow within some of the Lord Holders and with that, many of the holdfolk followed their lead. With this new doubt inplanted in the minds of the Holdfolk, relations between the weyr and the holds became rougher then they have ever been before. Fearful rumors of at least one of the much needed Holds considering breaking away from Akum Weyr, has reached the ears of those on every part of the weyr's territories.
It was not until Splinter Wood Hold started to refuse searchriders to search their Hold for candidates that they realized just how much trouble the weyr was in. With such lack of belief in their ability to fight the threat of thread, what will happen to the weyr? Will it slowly start to fall apart? Or will the leadership of the weyr find a way to build trust again with the Holds? And what of Dyamoth's clutch? With the holds turning against the weyr, will they find all of the candidates needed for the clutch before it's to late? Only time will tell.
