(OoC: Alright, so I read up a little on Pern, so I hope this isn’t too bad. Forgive the references to real-world objects like doorways and the like. I realize they don’t necessarily exist in this world, but I wanted some real-world references so everyone could get a feel for his height, appearance, personality, etc. Enjoy!)
Name: Civulen (Civu)
Phonetic: SEE-vous-len.
Age: 17
Gender: Male
Sexuality: Hetero
Rank: Apprentice Seaman/Candidate
Appearance:
Civu is around 6‘1, tall enough to be considered attractive by those who look for height, but not so tall as to be hitting his head on any doorways or anything. He has naturally wavy brown hair that is just long enough to get in his eyes at the wrong times, causing the necessity for him to push it out of the way.
His grey eyes are solid enough to keep most people away, but when someone actually looks into them, as opposed to judging him flat out, they can see a real person underneath, with a past and emotions and a lot of other things that just aren’t at the surface.
Having come from a fisherman hall in Northern, Civu is in very good shape. Standing on the deck of a ship, forced to fight for balance while, at the same time, needing to be agile enough to keep control of the rigging and the fishing nets will develop core, leg, and arm strength in anyone, and Civu has benefited from the experience tremendously. He has very good balance and faster reflexes than a lot of people.
All that said, there is still something about the new candidate that is off-putting to most people. He just gives off the vibe of a loner who doesn’t care about what others think. Ironically, this is being used as a segue to...
Personality: In conjunction with the ending of his appearance, Civu is a loner. He gets along best either on his own or with a few other people. This harkens back to his four years in the Fisherman crafthall, when he’d be on a small fishing vessel with a crew of no more than five.
Further, he has a tendency to improvise in situations. On a ship, anything can happen, and one learns that, sometimes, you need to rely on wit and instinct, because you might not always have the time to ask someone else what to do. Because of this, Civu has learned to -usually- react without thought, and do whatever he thinks is best in the situation. Yes, this has gotten him in trouble in the past, but he doesn’t tend to care.
That’s another thing about the boy. He doesn't necessarily care about the approval of others, but he does, on a deeper level, want to help people. As the lead fisherman on his ship, he developed the want and need to protect the fisherman who went out with him into the stormy waters surrounding Tillek, and that has burned itself into his personality. He almost has a need to be a hero, doing stupid things to save those people he's charged with.
History: Born in the brutal world of the Northern continent, at Tillek Hold, Civulen was almost destined from birth to be put into the Fishing Hall. His father, a Fisherman himself, knew the ins and outs of the sea, and even though Tillek, as well as the peninsula it resided on, was often pounded by harsh, salty rains and the cold sea, he loved it there.
When Civu was seven, his mother, who had always been a frail woman, took ill with pneumonia, and passed away. When she died, Civu’s father, who had been a charismatic, gregarious personality, seemed to die in personality. He stopped having gatherings in his home, stopped going out to the Hold and entertaining all manners of folk with his wild sea stories, and lost a lot of weight. Civu being a child, he didn’t understand what was going on with the man, and just took it in stride.
His father never really recovered from the blow of his mother’s death. Suddenly stone-faced and eternally solemn, he did his job with a grim determination, going out onto the sea for almost a turn at a time, leaving his only son in the care of some lady at the Hold. Because of this story growing up, Civu was never close to his father, nor did he have the basic fundamentals of childhood that lead to a mentally-healthy adult.
As he grew up, Civu started operating more and more on his own, driven by the silent self-reliance of his father as an idol to look up to, an unbreakable boulder in a fierce rainstorm, never giving an inch. That’s what he strove to become. Though he developed his “sea legs” as a child, the boy began his apprenticeship in the Fisherman crafthall at the age of 13.
Over the next almost-four turns, Civu flourished, just as his father did. The ocean is life, and you have to hold on for dear life if you have a chance to survive it. Terrible seastorms and the constant rocking taught quick reflexes, and quicker thinking. A lot of his mates died on those trips, swept off the ship by a sudden gust, ripped away in the undertow. The sea is life, and life is a horror story.
Despite being an apprentice, Civu had proven his skill enough to be trusted to start leading fishing expeditions further and further from Tillek, as the waters surrounding the Hold were losing fish. One day, close to the Southern continent, he found himself and his crew in the middle of a hurricane. While they were able to ride it out, the crew came out from the lower deck in the morning to find that their ship was leaking from multiple points. Making a quick decision, the Fisherman set the ship to dock at Southern Hold.
Over the next few sevendays, the crew was hard at work repairing the damages to the ship. During this time, a dragon appeared overhead, and lowered itself to where they were working. Most of the crew was enthralled, having never seen a dragon outside of the few times High Reaches Weyr had defended the Hold.
Turns out, the pair was searching for new candidates for Dark Moon Weyr. Civu had never really known that much about the fabled Dragonriders, but was insisted to go by his crew, who assured him with a great amount of friendly ribbing that, when he failed, they would let him come back. Cornered by a dare, and having never been the type to back down, Civu climbed up onto the dragon with the Searchrider, and off he went.
