Name: Qiana
Age: 17 turns
Gender: Female
Sexuality: heterosexual
Rank: Beasthandler Apprentice
Appearance: Qiana is a bit above average in height, reaching to five feet, seven inches (5'7"). In terms of proportions, most of her height is in her long legs; she's built in a way that she would have done rather well as a Runner. She’s not very built, but she has enough lean muscle to give her a toned physique, mostly from working with the animals in her parent’s stables for most of her life. Her hair, reaching to about the center of her back, is blonde; it was darker when she was younger, but being out in the sun for most of her life has bleached it to a much lighter shade. Her skin has also soaked up a good amount of sun, giving her a healthy golden tan. Qiana’s eyes are a light blue, much like the color of the sky on a bright and cloud-free day.
Her usual attire consists of the same basic types of clothing, though the actual clothing pieces themselves do vary. She’ll usually have a loose tunic to wear on her top half that reaches mid-thigh, the sleeves ranging from short-sleeve to elbow length (she doesn’t have many long-sleeves, having grown up in the South). Her trousers fit closely to her legs, as any baggy material would have been in the way when working with runners. Her boots are made of wherry-hide. They reach up to her mid-calf, and they have a very slight heel on them – this makes it easier to set her feet properly into the stirrup of a saddle, though many times she’ll simply ride a runner bareback, sometimes even foregoing a bridle and rein for their halter and lead rope.
Since most of her clothing was made by her or her mother, she’s always taken a strip of extra material from whatever tunic she was making and fashioned a band of cloth into a headband. It helps to keep her longer hair in check, and also to keep any sweat out of her eyes when she’s working with the animals on a particularly hot day.
Qiana has a slight limp to her step in her right leg. The limp is caused more by the shape of her shin bone, and doesn’t usually cause her any pain. Sometimes it will hurt a bit when there is a particularly violent storm coming, and sometimes in the bitter-cold months it will feel stiff, but for the most part it doesn’t cause discomfort.
Personality: Qiana has always had a very calm, water-flowing type of personality. She’s very amiable, always very gentle, and she also has a quiet way about her. Some of it is simply the way her personality naturally is, but her traits have only been honed and (somewhat) amplified into what she’s like today from learning how to properly work around runners. (To be loud or rambunctious could frighten the animals, and it’s best to be calm, gentle and well-leveled when around them.)
In some ways it could be said that she has a sort of mothering personality. She’s has a caretaker’s personality which suits her perfectly for the Beasthandler’s craft. When an animal (though she mostly works with runners) is frightened or injured, she’ll often hum or sing softly to them, or make other coo-ing, calming noises. She tends to act the same way around young children that she knows, and if she ever came to have a significant other she’d likely act in the same manner towards them – though likely with a bit more love and adoration in it.
She’s very loyal to those that she’s close to, and is not a very difficult person to befriend. Most of the time she retains her quiet demeanor, and there aren’t many in her life that have ever seen her angry or shouting – maybe a might bit cross, but never fully angry. Those that know her best would say that if someone were to see her angry, their best bet would be to get away.
Beneath the outer, visible layers of her personality is a hidden thread of insecurity that winds tightly through her being. It stems from past events in her childhood, and how she used to act. When she is in a completely new place she often will not seek out interaction with others, though if others come to talk to her she puts on a smile and is friendly with them as she is with those she already knows. In new places like that she seeks the comfort of animals, more specifically she seeks it with whatever runners are closest.
It has taken her a long time to learn how to properly interact with people, and most of what she learned about interacting with others she’d learned from spending time with runners. If her parents hadn’t made her go out into the Hold as she was growing, she might have still only known how to properly interact with the beasts.
History: Qiana grew up in Caspian Hold. Her parents were both Beasthandlers, and moved to Caspian to run the stables there. They rented out stalls, gave lessons, and also bred and sold runners. Qiana grew up working closely with her parents, and so with the runners. She’d always loved the great beasts, and when she was younger she often felt as though she belonged more with the runners instead of people. As she grew older her work with the runners continued, and under her parent’s tutelage she was a master at working with runners by the time she was in her mid-teens; her parents would sometimes call her a runner whisperer.
Once Qiana was older her parents offered to send her to a Beasthandler Hall to continue her learning of the craft, but Qiana refused; she was happy to remain at the stables where she’d grown up and continue working with the runners. Since they were really the only beasts she’d ever had a chance to work with in her training, she remained at the level of apprentice. Qiana didn’t much mind. She did like other animals, and even without training her gentle nature often made her rather adept at working with beasts of all kinds, but she had a soft spot for runners.
Since she was very young, it was clear to her parents that Qiana had difficulty in socializing with people. In the early stages of her life she would even try and avoid interacting with her own parents too much, and instead would seclude herself in the barn (standing outside the stall doors when she was too young to handle the runners). As she grew older and her parents introduced her to working with the runners, Qiana became more accepting of her parents interaction, and her socialization seemed to continue growing the more they taught her about handling the animals.
When she was just about six turns of age, Qiana was standing in the wrong place at the wrong time. Her father was working with a difficult, unbroken runner that they had just received, and Qiana walked by the entrance of it’s opened stall just as it brought it’s back legs out to kick. One of the beast’s hooves landed on her right shin, snapping the young bone quite cleanly. It was set well enough and it did heal, but the bone was misshapen from the incident enough to give Qiana somewhat of a limp.
After the incident she retreated back into herself again, even from the runners that had been her only steady interaction in her earlier years. However, her fascination and love of the animals could only be held off by fear for so long, and by the time she’d reached 8 turns in age she was poking her head back into her parent’s work. Despite her leg, her parents began to teach her to ride. It was mildly difficult in the beginning for her to keep her legs set in the right position, and she fell off a few times. There were a few more injuries (broken arms, bruises, etc) but they healed without another incident like her leg, and Qiana had built up a determination to ride that kept her getting back on.
She’d never felt as though she quite fit with other people, but the runners had always been quiet and accepting of her. Riding was just another way to get close to something – someone – that was so accepting of her awkward ways, and Qiana longed for that connection enough to keep at it. The determination paid off, and by the time she was thirteen turns in age Qiana was riding almost as well as her parents. They were certain that in a few more years she would be one of the best riders they’d seen.
In her fifteenth turn, her parents decided they wanted to give her a special gift, though it would not technically ‘arrive’ until she turned sixteen. They told her they wanted her to choose which horses to breed together, and the resulting foal or filly would be hers to keep. Qiana was ecstatic that the news of having a runner to call her own, and even more eager at the idea of having another living thing that she could feel so close to. She chose her favorite stallion and mare from the runners they had, and lavished the mare with attention during her gestation. Within a sevenday of her sixteenth turnday, the mare gave birth to a lovely buckskin filly; Qiana named her Meadowsweet. She still made sure to take care of the other runners in their stables, but for many months her attention was focused on the filly.
Since Meadowsweet had been born so closely to Qiana’s own sixteenth turnday, by the time Qiana was turning seventeen the filly was a yearling mare and Qiana was ready to start her training. Since she’d been so close to the yearling from the moment of her birth, it didn’t take long at all to saddlebreak her – though both Meadowsweet and Qiana seemed to prefer riding bareback.
Qiana remained at the home she’d grown up in next to the stables with her Mother and Father. She spent her days doing the chores in the stables, though she still preferred to keep to herself enough that she left her parents to direct any lessons. A good amount of her chores were spent running errands for her parents. They had been sending her out on smaller errands since she was young in hopes of helping her learn to socialize with others; Qiana had protested at first, but her parents had been stoic in their decision and insisted that it would be good for her in the long run.
Now that she was older, Qiana’s parents had left her with the responsibility of taking care of all the errands that needed to be run outside of the stable. She would buy groceries for the house, and negotiate with traders for supplies for the animals. The constant exposure that her parents had been sure to give her had helped Qiana learn how to interact with others, and she found herself comfortable enough to return any interaction that others would initiate with her. Often times her chores would bring her to mingle through Capsian hold and get to know better the other people that lived there. Now that she’d grown used to the Hold and its inhabitants, Qiana even found herself initiating conversation on her own. Of course, whenever she had free time, it was often spent in the stables, or riding her Meadowsweet.
Pets: Meadowsweet, a buckskin bay yearling mare that Qiana bred and raised herself.

Other Information: I would like her to be Searched as a candidate in time, but I was hoping to roleplay her at least for some time in the Hold itself. When she gets searched, she'll definitely be wanting to bring Meadowsweet with her.
