Name: Yorisa
Age: 16
Gender: Female
Sexuality: Bisexual
Rank: Candidate
Appearance: Yori is a young woman who is of average stature, standing at 5'7", with no more apparent signs of growth. She has fleshed out into the woman she will be for the rest of her turns at the age of sixteen, not uncommon for some. Her build is slender and yet athletic, with her figure not lacking in curves where they are needed. She appears tall due to her longer legs and rather hourglass figure. She seems as though she were built to run, given her appearance. It helps that this is indeed what she does: she is a runner.
She sports long brunette hair and warm, milk chocolate brown eyes as is typical for many on Pern. Her hair is highlighted by lighter brown, but it seems to almost match the color of her eyes. At a closer look, however, the pupils are surrounded by a golden honey brown coloration, which give the otherwise single colored eyes a unique look. Full lips, arching eyebrows and a nose that is neither larger nor smaller complete her face. Her complexion always sports a tan, and it is a wonder not a burn. Still, she takes her precautions due to her choice of work as a runner, and takes care of her skin as best she can. She has feet that are perhaps considered larger for a woman, a size nine in Terran comparison. Still, they serve her purpose for them well, and she is quite agile upon them. Her hands are a fitting size for her, neither larger nor smaller, with healthy nails that do not often chip or break, and fingers that are deft at the tasks given them.
A piercing in each ear, as she very much enjoys wearing earrings, as well as bracelets, a necklace or two, and rings. She does not necessarily care for expensive jewelery, and is not extravagant in her wearing of said baubles. Still, she likes that which is unique, and exotic, in appearance. Her attire is always suited to the task at hand, though it is obvious she has a flare for stylizing her clothing. Skirts have become an impracticality for her, and are to be worn only when deemed appropriate. Shorts, a sturdy pair of wher hide boots built for lightness and comfort, as well as proper support, and a shirt are her regular ensemble.
Personality: Yori has a wonderful balance between a feminine sort of person, and a tomboy. She does not prefer the company of one gender over the other. Perhaps this is tied in with her open minded personality, her ability to judge people for who they are. She is not an argumentative sort of person. She is quite an adaptable individual who seeks to understand others, and to be accepting despite their inherent flaws or her personal misgivings. This is not to say she will get along with everyone. There are people who simply can not form a relationship due to conflicting personalities. Still, she is civil as she can be with such ones, simply choosing to deviate from the path of pursuing a relationship that goes beyond acquaintances with them.
She has not been able to decide where her preferences for romantic pursuits lie. She has found that both male and females hold traits that she finds attractive, though with females her personality tends to be more of a dominant type, and with males does not like to be in a relationship where she is anything less than on equal footing. She is a very proud young woman, who believes females are capable to do anything men are, and should be treated as equals, given respect where it is due.
Yorisa possesses a bit of a temper. She does her utmost to keep it under control, but if she feels insult is given her or one she cares for, or an issue on which she feels very strongly is being debated in a condescending manner, she tends to get more and more irate. As a person who often bottles her feelings rather than discusses them with others--part of her strength in wanting to deal with her own problems, and a weakness in that she does not seem to know when to accept help--it can turn into a dastardly display of ill temper, which does not simply stop at verbal arguments. This is something she needs to learn to deal with, and control. In part by allowing help where it is needed, and casting pride aside.
She is a very independent person. She takes her privacy very seriously, and enjoys her time alone. She expects that she is respected when she wishes to keep something to herself, or deal with it on her own terms. She does not like authority figures stepping beyond what she considers to be their rightful boundaries. She is more than willing to show respect to rank, but she is not someone that anyone ought to think will allow herself to be walked all over in the name of a rank. She is capable of caring for herself, more so than many, and knows her own self worth. She knows her strengths and chides herself for her weaknesses, always striving to better herself as a person, as a member of whatever community she is in. Thus far it has been a Hold, but she will take the same actions when entering her life in the Weyr.
Loyalty and honesty are very important to Yorisa. So important, that there is nothing she despises and abhors more than a liar, a backstabber. She will never be the sort to sit by when idle gossip or rumors are being spoken. She will not subject herself to even lending an ear. If she has a problem with a person, she will go deal with it, face to face, the way she feels it ought to be done. If someone dares to speak ill of her behind her back, or about her friends and companions, that is something that will cause her to grow very angry. She expects to be shown the same courtesy and respect she shows others. There is no reason for lies or disloyalty.
It is safe to say that she is very mature for her sixteen Turns. Perhaps overly so, but she does not judge others based on their individual personal growth rates. She judges them by how they treat her, and treat others. If they are sincere people, or liars and no good friends to others. Yes, she does not judge others as she would not want to be judged, but she lets her morals aid in making decisions on what she would like for friends, or what sort of people she is dealing with. It has helped her to be a very good judge of character.
Yorisa can be very stubborn. It comes with pride, and is a weakness of hers that she needs to learn to develop into a strength. If she does not feel she is in the wrong, sometimes she may be blind to seeing that she actually should give leeway to what another is saying. She will cling to her stubborn belief that she is right, and will have to be forcibly shown she is not, oftentimes. She will, however, have the humility to apologize and be ashamed for her stubbornness once she has been shown the error of her ways.
She enjoys a wide variety of activities, both social and singular in nature. Time spent with desirable companions, outdoor activities such as swimming, exploration, traveling and climbing--be this trees or rock faces--are only a few. She has a vast love of riding runners, and of course of running. Something about running long distances brings a thrill to her heart like no other. It is a love that has put her into fine shape, and good health. She has phenominal cardiovascular capacity, and stamina that is unrivaled save by that of others who choose her calling. She does not have a head for mathematics, and yet reading and the sciences, mostly biological, are things which she enjoys and excels at. She is of average talent when it comes to singing or musical aspirations, and yet can play the pipes very well, as she has a pair she brings with her on her ventures. She is no raucous wherry when she chooses to sing, as she holds middling talent, but she has never pursued this beyond mere dalliances with such things. Therefore she is unlearned in this area and does not care, but will sing heartily to any ballad she enjoys.
It is the outdoors and outdoor activities that are her true love. Anything that can be done outdoors, the working of her hands be it to hunt, or gather food, or even chopping of wood, these things she enjoys. She can cook, sew and do other tasks suited to a home keeper. She can also hunt, tan hides and make lovely, wherry feather lined quilts, of fur or material. Her ability to make anything beyond sleeping furs is not practiced. She merely tinkers with other crafts, such as the arts, and yet she is very open to trying new things so her talents are varied, if unpracticed and only apprentice level at best, save for those she has delved into more deeply and gained affluence for.
History: Azvon hold is a bustling and lively place to grow up. This is where Yorisa was born, to a moderately well off family consisting of herself, her father and mother. Due to complications during Yorisa's birth, she was the only child carried to term. After two miscarriages early on in the pregnancy, Layla no longer carried any other children within her womb. Yorisa, thereby, became her parent's pride and joy. The only child they would ever have, they were determined to do right by her.
Azvon was a good place for the small family, who thrived under their selective crafts. Layla, as a jewelcrafter, made good marks, and was able to expand on her work in retrospects to the mediums used. Saving and budgeting allowed for the more costly jewels to be bought, and yet the woman did not limit herself to merely using that which cost more. No, she used mediums from clay, to wood and shells, as well as beads. These she crafted herself, the raw materials found or bought for a far lower price than expensive jewels. They sold just as well, to those who had a fine flair for style and accessories. Belts, necklaces, earrings and bracelets were made, as well as hair pieces and pins. Anything that could be expanded on, was. It was from her mother that Yorisa learned to be adaptable, and received her creativity.
Yorisa's father was a good man, who worked hard to provide for his wife and child. He works in the mine, about eight to ten hours of his day. The time he spends with his family has always been of the utmost importance, and he instilled in Yorisa the value of knowing what things were most important in life, and which took secondary precedence. His work ethics were rubbed off onto his daughter, and his logic, and kind heart were something all in Azvon knew and respected him for. He never shirked his duties to family or his work, and was good to all, treating all men--and women--as equals.
This is the family Yorisa was born into. It is of no wonder that she learned much from these kinds of parents, and grew into a well rounded individual. Even from a young age, she was encouraged to try as many things as possible, and to ask as many questions as she could think of. She was always asking questions, and 'why' or 'how' were amongst them quite frequently. No question was ever a stupid question, and her parents seemed to have endless patience and love for her. Perhaps they were a bit lenient with her, and hence she developed a few quirks that they worked with her to resolve. They were careful to not spoil her, to teach her the value of earning things. Still, she had a temper which never completely dissipated. Still, they knew it would be something she would need to work hard on herself. They could not rectify all her problems forever.
As a child, Yorisa always had many friends. Earlier, she was not so selective. She would befriend anyone, and eventually she had to learn what kind of association was beneficial to her, and which was not. She grew the ability to be able to judge this for herself, with her parent's instilling morality and good judgment into her. She came to dislike people who were selfish, or lazy. She mostly did not like liars and those who gossiped behind other people's backs. Her father in mother believed in treating others as you would be treated, and so did their young daughter. Thus, the friends she made grew to respect her, and close bonds were formed with male and female friends alike.
Yorisa enjoyed so many activities and things that her parents were a little concerned she would not be able to decide on a craft for herself. She seemed to love riding runners and being around them. She also loved to help her mother in her work, but enjoyed being out of doors more. She was always running everywhere, and people would comment on the speed in which she completed errands and got from place to place. Even then, she had very good stamina, and was active to a larger degree than most. When she turned twelve Turns of age, she could not decide on a craft. Her parents, ever understanding, gave her a turn in which to decide what she would like to do with herself.
It was during this turn that Yorisa began to realize that there were some females she would view the same as some males. Crushes developed on both genders, and she became confused. Many Hold bound individuals looked down upon such a thing. So, she spoke to her parents about it, wondering if there was something the matter with her. Her parents, being less hide bound than many others, spoke to her in a mature manner, and let her know that her sexuality was something she would need to discover for herself. It was not to say her father or mother were pleased to discover this. They both would have liked for her to marry and have a family of her own, someday. Still, they respected their daughter enough to let her make her own decision on something so personal. They would not hinder her choice, and would support her. She could not have realized, then, how fortunate she was since she was not Weyr bred, but Hold bred.
At thirteen Turns, she decided that she would like to be a runner. It was not what her parents had hoped for, once again. Yet, they had always given her room to be her own person, and both knew she loved to run. They told her they would support her decision, once again. So it was she found her place in life, for how she loved to run! She got to travel and be independent, which she valued very highly. She learned to cook, and sew, as well as hunt. She learned about defending herself, be it with knife or fists. She took a whole turn to study these things that would aid her in what she had chosen to do. Finally, when she was ready, she officially became a runner for Azvon Hold. Her parents were proud of her determination to do so, and agreed that she had chosen something she loved, and that was most important.
By fifteen turns, Yorisa was aware that she preferred both genders. Not one, nor the other, but both. She had debated over it for three Turns, before deciding that this was the case. By then, she was aware of the feelings of many in the Hold towards this, and had the sense to keep it to herself, unless she was sure that those whom she told did not mind such things. She also learned that in a Weyr, there were people who actually preferred members of the same gender, or both, as she did. She was quite pleased to hear that there was somewhere this was more acceptable, but was content to stay at the Hold. However, fate had other plans in mind for the young woman who had grown to have pride in herself, and had a good set of morals. She had never quite overcome her temper, but at least she kept at it, which was what counted. Fate decided that while visiting Dark Moon Weyr with a message, she be Searched by a greenrider. Searched, just as a hatching was coming up.
She had never even considered this as a possibility for herself. It was a complete and utter shock to her, and her reaction was to simply stare. Never before then had she been speechless. Still, rather than accept right away, she contacted her parents, and let them know. She was unsure what to do, but they encouraged her to at least try. Try everything once, and so she would. Depending on what happened, she might try again. Only time would tell. Still, in her mind, she would try this once, for now, and that was that. The greenrider took her to fetch some belongings, and she found herself at Dark Moon Weyr, wondering what else fate had in mind for her.
