Her mind was still spinning, whirling, sloshing about from the events that had happened in the last hour or two. Shock was still her closest companion and the reality of what had truly happened had not yet set in. It took a while before you realized your life had changed, changed all because one single entity, some chance or twist of fate that decided that now was your time, that you were being given a chance, that the mother of all opportunities was yours to take if you played your cards right, if you were good, if karma decided not to bite you where it hurt. There were so many external factors that could have changed what happened. There were so many unrealized instances and moments that had led you to where you stood right then, that led you to the one time that really mattered, to the one moment that truly counted.
And this had been hers.
The last Hatching and the tragedy that had stemmed from it was gone. It had been blown away, annihilated and completely forgotten upon the Sands but an hour gone. It was not as if the shadow was still upon her, it was not as if she still remembered. She no longer had moments of such intense fear that she shuddered from it, nauseous, almost physically sick from the memories. She no longer remembered the hideous fear that plagued her, the fear that she would become the laughingstock of all of Dark Moon, that she would spend her life alone and dragonless, her dream unfulfilled and broken. No, she didn't remember at all, she didn't remember any of it. It was as if it had never happened. All because of one moment, one circumstance, one creature, one soul.
Deoneth.
Salina felt giddy when she remembered her Impression, when she realized she was Dark Moon's newest Weyrwoman, junior though she might be. She felt as if she were dreaming when she remembered her gold, when she remembered everything that had happened on the Sands. It was brilliant. And now she was wishing to celebrate with the other person who mattered the most in her life: Ez'ki.

The gold had impressed, and it had impressed to his best friend he could have ever asked for. And he couldn’t be happier at that moment in time. He felt giddy for her. Even Garisath was showing signs of his bonded’s over excitement increasing his own.
He’d come when she asked for him, and he knew it would be just their celebration, the weyr would celebrate also, but, they were to have a certain celebration, in the oldest fashion they knew.
Ez looked dashing as always, bangles and adornments not complete without that dented and aged enamel bangle.
“Salinaaaaa” He chimed through to her, as he walked in – he wasn’t scared of what he’d see, he’d seen it all before, and she knew it too, she might slap him on the arm, or verbally rebuke him, but she’d never actually throw him out, there was little point.
He jumped through to her all full of grins and smiles and wild happiness. He was giddy through the glee within him. “Congrats again, my junior Weyrwoman.” He bowed, and pulled her into a hug, almost crushing her to him. “You’ve done so well Sassie, I’m so very happy for you,” He beamed idly, looking totally awed and astounded. “You’re so deserving…” He added in complete absence of himself for a few moments while he acted the fool.

Salina huffed a sigh as her best friend wandered with little ado into the makeshift weyrling barracks. Her things had been moved by the drudges and she was now in her own little room, getting ready for the Weyr's celebration of their newest Queen. But first, she'd wanted to celebrate for Ez. Her sigh was not for his presence, it was for it being at a very inopportune time. Or perhaps it was better now than it would have been ten seconds earlier.
The weyrling Weyrwoman settled snug white trousers at her waist, deftly zipping and buttoning. She was grabbed in a hug and completely drawn into his happiness and wild glow. Salina laughed, pulling away, beaming. She looked radiant, so absolutely and completely happy that she seemed to glow. She wore all white, from the snug trousers that encased her legs to the loose white shirt she wore that gleamed with golden embroidery.
"Hey now!" She tapped the brown weyrling in his stomach, head tipped back so she could see him. "Don't be getting all strange on me now, Weyrling Ezieki." Her face turned serious but the wild happiness was there in her eyes, making them gleam and glitter. "I'm still Salina. Never worry about that."
The next second she was squealing, hugging him hard round the waist, unable to contain herself. "Ez, can you believe it! I can hardly believe it! I've been thinking about it over and over again and I just can't believe it! I keep thinking I'm dreaming!" She squealed again and hugged him once more. "Oh, Ez." She beamed. "Thank you. Thank you so much, darling." She cupped his cheek, her mouth replacing it in a swift kiss. "It's all because of you."

Ez grinned fiercely, almost as though this was his own impression all over again. “Well then Sassie, you should know, junior weyrwoman-to-be or otherwise, it’s Ez’ki now. But Ez’s still fine by me.” He smiled and winked as he took a seat on her bunk.
“I know I know Sassie! Jees,” He laughed, sinking into her cot as though it were his own. Wiping the kiss from his cheek, “and junior werywoman, you should not be doing that, you got me a rather large scale hiding for that last time, before all of this, and I’ll not have that again.” He laughed harmlessly, “Believe it Sassie, because you’re living this for the rest of your life – all being well.” He grinned.
She was infectious, as always. He beamed over at her, “Remember to breathe in your excitement will you Sassie, last thing we want is a new gold hatchling betweening because her bonded lost her breath to excitement, and as always, you’re very, very welcome. Just remember it when I play up and I’m sent to you with my tail between my legs alright?” He laughed, for the situation was inevitable. He would be rebuked, he always was! It was just part of his make up, part of his genetics that jut called for trouble. He yawned and looked over at her. Still grinning in a Cheshire fashion.

Salina waved one hand airily, her motions wide and large due to her happiness. She looked almost punch drunk, high off of her own happiness. "Oh, bother that," she laughed. "That was a real kiss then and as far as I'm aware, you're allowed to give people kisses on the cheeks."
She felt a huge thrill race through her. She'd be living this for the rest of her life. She almost felt like hugging herself and spinning around, laughing with her rampant giddiness. She was no longer shy, quiet and unassuming, not in this moment, not when the most amazing thing to have happened to her was finally sinking in.
Eyes rolled skyward as her spirits soared. "Oh, Ez, I probably won't be senior Weyrwoman until I'm old enough to not be able to use it. By then, there will be at least two other junior Weyrwomans and even they might be too old to really use any sort of power." She laughed, running her fingers through his crimson hair as she stood before him. She patted his cheek, eyes flashing wickedness. "But I will remember. I will remember that Ez'ki was the one who convinced me to Stand once more. And thank Faranth he did!"

”Thank Faranth indeed. Now, Sassie, please sit down before the excitement gives you a hernia.” He looked at her and laughed, “You know I’m so happy for you Sassie, you’ve always been born for something like this, and you almost lost your faith, almost, almost.” He shook his head, to imagine, that she would lose her faith, that she almost didn’t stand for she thought she wouldn’t be able to bear it. He smiked and looked at her mighty satisfied.
“She’s a grand creature, she is, Deoneth,” He nodded, then shrugged, ”Not that I know a great deal about gold hatchlings, but she looks like a strong one, she beats the hid off any of the bronzes that hatched at mine – but then, she’s a gold! The only one who could almost compare to her? Maybe Garisath, when he’s not busy chasing flutterbys.” He laughed and shook his head “For a brown, who are meant to be collected, he is remarkably scatterbrained.” He remarked with fondness, looking at Sassie, she looked odd, he couldn’t figure her mood at the moment, it was like she was volatile. Absolutely not herself, but excitement done that to a person.
“What is it Sassie?”

She did as she was bid, flopping down beside him, still grinning like a wherry. How could she not? The most amazing thing had happened to her, the most amazing thing to have ever happened to her had occurred today.
"Thank you, Ez." She inhaled, trying to calm herself down, trying to make certain that she could truly thank him and thank him for what he was saying, not because of the overwhelming vestiges of emotion that still overrode her system. "This is why I keep you around, so you can say things like that." She winked.
And then she sighed with pure delight, a look of bliss crossing her face. Her smile turned dreamy, her eyes faraway. The gold was out inspecting with stern order from her bonded to come back...any time now. "She's just gorgeous, isn't she? I haven't seen another gold with her coloring..." Pride was there, in her eyes, in her voice. "And yes, only Garisath has any chance of equaling her." She laughed and turned to look at her best friend. "What's what, Ez?" she asked, not sure what he was getting at. She had her ideas but...it was always best to be sure.

“No problems Sassie.” He relaxed back and stared off at the ceiling. Contented and still awash with glee. “Oh yep, personal Compliment service, that’s me. No fears Sassie, I’m here just to make you feel better” He winked at her and laughed airily. She was so full of joy. So ecstatic, euphoric even. He felt proud somewhere deep down, but he wouldn’t tell her that, that’d be too sentimental. Ez wasn’t too prolific at sentimental.
“She is, she’s very gorgeous, and as to her colour? I could not comment! I’ve but seen the one queen that resides in this weyr, and one in Telgar, no more and no less, well other than her ladyship down there.” He cooed over to the dragon. He beamed as she too complimented Garisath, “Sure he’s no bronze, but he’s got the heart of the Rukbat.” He grinned foolishly, and looked over at her, laughing suddenly, realising just how much of a wherry he must seem right about then.
Whe she replied with “What’s what, Ez?” he realised the suspicion he’d seen in her eyes had been imaginary. His eyes widened for a fleeting moment, revealing some sort of guilt, then he looked away, back off to the space that was somewhere beyond the ceiling. “Oh nothing Sassie, I just thought you gave me a look, other than blissful excitement. That’s all my dear, nothing more, but I’m wrong.” He grinned, but it wasn’t quite as exerting as it had been prior to his comment. The edge seemed dulled, dulled by whatever was going through the brown weyrlings head.
“Garisath’s a good lad… he really is.” He tried returning to the former conversation, as though it might distract her, his mind wasn’t even quite recognising that the best way to have distracted her, would have been to have mentioned her fine bonded, and just how magnificent she was. There was something in his head, and undoubtedly, as close as they were, she’d notice it.

"That's right," she teased. "Your entire goal in life is to do nothing but compliment me and make sure that I'm always happy." Gray eyes rolled with her high spirits. She just couldn't control it. How could she? After utter devastation, she was gifted with something she'd only dreamed of ever having.
All the girls there had dreamed of me, in one way or another. Deoneth put in her two marks, head rising regally from her paws. I picked Salina-mine for a reason.
Salina almost cooed with happiness to hear Deo's voice in her mind. She was so far gone with happiness at the moment that she seemed an entirely different person. Gone was logic and any inhibition. She was nothing short of wildly ecstatic.
"Thank you." She beamed, looking down at Deoneth once more. The gold was preening from Ez's compliments, her neck arched and her wings half-spread. She was all the regal Queen, brilliant with her self-pride.
Despite her wild happiness from her Impression, she knew Ez well enough to recognize when something was plaguing him. She also knew when he was lying. He always tried to be overly casual and play it off nonchalantly, as if nothing at all were going wrong. Too bad for him she knew him too well. Salina and Deoneth shared twin looks of exasperation.
You will soon learn, my dear, that men think they are the epitome of perfection. Deoneth eyed the brown and his rider thoughtfully, her eyes whirling slowly and thoughtfully. He seems well enough...If he harms Salina-mine... No, no. Deoneth, he's fine. He's a friend. A very good friend. I watch either way.
Golden head shook as the girl mentally laughed. It was an amazing thing to have this, to have something so miraculous. The wild happiness speared through her again. It was difficult to control it, but master it she did. Salina looked at Ez, nodding her agreement for his thoughts on his brown. She bit her lip, debating.
And she took the leap.
"Ez." Her voice was soft, gentle. She wasn't sure what effect her words were going to make. She hoped it only made small ripples in the lake of their friendship. "I know what you're thinking about." How could she not? She'd once had that same look on her face. Another time. Another place. After that, any else who had that same look was a kindred spirit. "You're thinking about R'fael, aren't you?" she whispered.
Salina knew.

Smile having faded from his lips, he was pensive. Ez sat in the silence, his mind whirring, not noticing anything that should have been happening, silence didn’t happen between friends sharing glee. He was consumed in his mind for a few moments, folding his hands together behind his head as he looked at the ceiling of the room, in his own world.
But then her voice broke the silence of his thoughts, she was lesser, less excited, less joyous, and he had to say he was thankful in a mean manner, and then looked at her, he didn’t move, just hummed a response as she called him, and said she knew what he was thinking about, but he wasn’t listening, he was absent still, the next thing Ez caught was “…R’fael aren’t you?”
His head jerked in her direction, guilt riddled him for a moment or so, and then he coughed and looked back at the ceiling, “Nope, don’t know what you’re talking- Oh there’s hardly a point” He sat up and looked at her, slightly pained, but not by something physical.
“you know me to well Salina, far far too well, and sometimes I wonder if it’s a curse as opposed to a blessing tha4t I took time to befriend you as opposed to just sleep with you.” He added casually, a comment made certainly not for the first time, and in a way it was a compliment, Ez was more picky about his friends as opposed to his partners (slightly backward as it might be) He sighed and looked at her.
“I’m bad Sassie… I shouldn’t be allowed this at all… I’m so sorely tempted…” He shook his head, rubbing over his face as he lay back down, hands pressing his cheeks and mouth white beneath them as he stared into the ceiling. He sighed and looked at her, “I should have told you sooner… I know, and you know I would but we’ve had no time together since my hatching, since your hatching…” He shrugged and looked might torn up before her.

Salina nearly laughed at the look of guilt that crossed the brown weyrling’s face. He looked like a child caught sneaking treats from the kitchen or someone caught with someone they shouldn’t be with. Of course, even then, Ez probably wouldn’t feel guilty. That alone stopped the laughter.
She did grin though, an exasperated grin as she reached out and tugged on his vivid hair gently. “It is a blessing, you wherry. Else you wouldn’t be subject to my dazzling wit, good humor and advice.” They both knew that if they’d bedded each other, they would never have talked again. Strangely, it bothered neither of them. Things had worked out in their favor.
The gold weyrling leaned against the wall, arms crossed over her chest as she looked at him, the humor and seriousness mixing in her pale face. “I know,” she murmured. “We haven’t had much time. And I’ve known for a while.” She shrugged, just throwing it out there. She might have been a bit high from her Impression yet. “And who wouldn’t be tempted? Half the Weyr would like to get their hands on him.” Salina sighed and glanced at Ez. “And my best friend did, didn’t tell me the details and now…” Her head shook as she hesitated. Dare she? She knew Ez would not be angry with her but other things could happen. She didn’t want him to sever this tie if it meant this much to him. “And now, that same best friend is not acting the same at all. I think it’s safe to say he’s developed a bit of a crush.”
And Faranth help her if he did get angry. She’d box his ears and tell him to stop being a wherry.

He flew into a bit of a panic, “No! no I do not I do not have a crush on him? Why would I? I mean he’s just not, I mean he’s not for me, or whatever, he’s not my taste, I don’t do the prolonged wanting thing, I don’t do the pain, thing or the lingering affections, shared glances that just too sharding cute!” He was getting angry now.
And in his momentary rage he just realised that he had signed the document confirming the allegation of his crush.
“ohhhkay – I know I’m not myself… but I can’t be. I’m not allowed, like you I’ve got this baby dragon, who’s going to be mentally scarred and think I hate him for the rest of his life if I do. And Garisath mans to much to me for me to fritter it away like that.” He shrugged, and looked abnormally deflated. “I don’t really wan’t to talk about it Sassie… If you asked me before, I would have told you, you know I would, lets jut suffice to say, he’d never been with a guy before, but it was good. And I’ve got this taste for this drug, that’s just not available right now. And if I come out of Weyrlinghood, and it’s not available? Or he’s changed his mind, my drug’s changed it’s mind? I’m not sure I’ll cope. Because I can’t flirt properly, because without my intentions behind it, it feels like I’m flogging a dead runner.” He looked sad.
“I’m sorry, I know I’m a fool. And I can get another guy as easy as that” He snapped his fingers as though to irritate, “Or girl, whatever. But, you know it’s one of my rules – once bitten, twice shy, I rarely go back for more… but he’s making it worse…” He paused, sighed and looked at her, lips grimaced for a moment, “Though, one thing you …don’t know, is that the night of my impression? He came to my room. He didn’t do anything. But… it just made everything worse. I was avoiding him, like he was firehead made man. But, he cornered me, and well… it just made it hurt more Sassie… I think I’m broken. And I can’t fix it till Garisath’s older. Shells.” He cursed, but there was no effort behind it. He felt very unlike himself. Very. Very unlike himself.
