The Wildlands of Pern
Aivas succeeded in the Ninth Pass, his grand master plan of diverting the Red Star worked, and Thread never fell to terrorize Pern again. The riders over the following decades and centuries abandoned the Weyrs to become holders, crafters, and many of them starwatchers. Their own crafthall dedicated to sky watching and guarding the skies became what most dragonriders were known for. Small groups still held the Weyrs open to keep the sands ready for clutching queens. So life went on, settling the Southern Continent and the altering of life for all those people for hundreds of years.
Until, in the late spring season of 3381, it all came crashing down.
A series of events led to the dragons exhausting themselves telekinetically protecting the planet from asteroids that were approaching dangerously close, but one got through and slammed into the sea. The tidal wave that followed was bad enough, but the asteroid had hit right on a plate divide under the sea. The Ring Islands errupted, spewing so much ash into the air that the sky disappeared behind it for an entire year in an event known as the Year of Black Sky.
Plant life died out extensively as did animal life. Shortly afterwards the people and even the dragons of Pern began to die, from lack of food and the older ones starving themselves for the sake of the young children and weyrlings that had the misfortune to come into Pern at that time. Life became by the first egg for many as the plains, the forests, the bogs and swamps became morasses of festering putrid rotting matter. Many holds completely died out.
It is now 3386, five years after that fateful impact and four after the sky returned. It is a cooler, much harsher Pern. There are less than two dozen dragons left alive and only two queens, gathered in what used to be known as Fort Weyr. Many of the people still alive are gathering in Fort Hold and Fort Weyr, the first of the true holds and weyrs. They come together for protection and to rebuild in this dusty, colder, and far less hospitable world. Freak electrical and dust storms are common, and who knows what lies out in the mucks of the old swamps and forests. Fort Hold and Weyr are still mostly normal, but what about elsewhere?
The old goldrider, caretaker of the sands, Brietta, has more than played her part. She was key in bringing the remaining riders from the Northern and Southern continents together in one location and in trying to help save as many as she could. Her queen, Janinth, surprised everyone by rising long after it was thought she would still be fertile and producing a clutch of twelve eggs, including a queen egg. But what will come of those who remain, and try to carve new life in what has become the Wildlands of Pern?
