Rukai Weyr
Rukai Weyr
It started with a simple act of defiance during the Sixth Pass. A tiny tenacious grey who bristled at rules and restrictions disappeared from Aerten Weyr one sunny afternoon. What they discovered was paradise.
Deep in the south lay the paradise that few dared to dream of and a site for a weyr that had never been fathomed. What the grey dragon and her rider discovered was a massive fissure near an old volcano. Exploring further the pair found the fissure to be in the roof of a massive cavern. Thosands of smaller caves branched off of the main as well as tunnels. A softly glowing natural moss cung to many of the surfaces, giving the cavern a light of its own. Why, a whole wing would have room to go between from here.
This was the kind of place that would give the whers the freedom to roam so much farther during the day, and still provide a safe haven from thread. The surrounding terrain could provide grazing lands for stock and the lush jungles could be harvested for their delicate fruits. The most distinct feature of this dreamlike paradise was the cove with it's obsidian-sanded beach, something any dragon would be able to recognize and arrive over.
From this chance discovery sprouted talks of actually slipping away to make this place a home. "Rukai" the grey called it, insisting in naming it herself in a rather territorial manner. None argued the case and thus, paradise now had a name. Action came forth from idea and a number of riders banded together, creating this new weyr. Most of the foundation came from Aerten Weyr, though people from all over Pern gave support and ventured south.
Rukai had hardly found its feet when everything was torn out from underneath them. Mavaranth, the junior queen from Fort Weyr, had hardly enough time to see her clutch break shell and pair off before the murder of her dear rider that sent her between, leaving Rukai without a Weyrwoman. Rukai found itself in the iron grip of Skay'den, an idealistic greenrider who's sanity was questionable. The Weyr saw more loss than gain under Skay'den's reign. Their Steward was put out of commission and a number of riders were lost, including the weyrling queen who was Rukai's last hope. The wherhandlers ushered most of the weyrlings deep into the mines in hopes of protecting the young riders.
Brutality seemed to be a common factor that united Skay'den's group of followers. Many were left with both physical and emotional scars the were evidence of the greenrider's reign. Somehow the population endured... all the way until the dawn of the day that saw Skay'den finally slit his own throat. Both a madman and a genius... he was dead, freeing Rukai.
Since then, the Weyr has pulled together to stabilize itself and rebuild after Skay'den. Ezri and her golden Cirruth, injured by a wher attack in their home of High Reaches have come south to recuperate from their injuries and many hope the goldrider will make a new home and bring hope to Rukai. It's a new dawn for the southern paradise. Eggs are soon to hatch and when Cirruth matures, her flight will decide Rukai's first Weyrleader.
Now Rukai seeks to rebuild; mold and claim their future. Support from the north is vital to their survival and the call is out for riders from all over Pern as well as candidate for the eggs that will hatch soon and the eggs that will come in the future. Each individual is critical to the survival of the Weyr in the South.
Join us now and claim your piece of paradise. Thread is still a threat and all hands are called upon to protect their home. Whers are the eyes of the night, poised and ready to do their part in protecting Rukai. But will it be enough? Venture South and see for yourself...
