Several generations have passed since the last time thread was a danger to Evariste Hold, and famine had struck their farming hard. Though they usually had plenty of crops, storms from the mountains ruined over half of their usual crop, and disease spread among their herdbeasts. Evariste regularly tithed to both Vanadium Weyr and Illyria Weyr, usually having plenty to share between the two small Weyrs, but this time they gave only a small amount to each Weyr. Illyria was more sympathetic to the hold, and agreed to accept the small portion because of the famine and disease, but Vanadium Weyr demanded everything they were due- and warned Illyria if Evariste wouldn't supply it, then they expected Illyria to give them the rest. Tension crept between the two Weyrs, which were once powerful allies, and a rift began to form as Illyria refused to share anything they needed to feed their own Weyr.
The crafty Vanadium Weyrwoman devised a plot to steal the Lord Holder's daughter, therefore forcing them to send more food, and framed Illyria for the kidnapping. Meanwhile, Illyria was sending riders out to ask other Holds for small amounts of food, to keep their Weyr alive. The dragons were already suffering from the small amount of herdbeasts, and thread was quickly approaching. Illyria Weyr was scarcely able to defend their own Weyr, while Vanadium Weyr, where the dragons were eating better because Vanadium had "stolen" the Lord Holder's daughter out of Illyria and returned her, which caused the Lord Holder to give them more generous portions by taking away any new herdbeasts and crop out of the tithe that would have gone to Illyria, was able to defend Evariste from thread as well as their own Weyr.
Slowly the Weyrs recovered from the famine, but gossip broke out about Vanadium's involvement in the kidnappings, and Evariste grew suspicious. Tensions are high between both Weyrs and Evariste, who remains neutral but un-trusting of both Illyria and Vanadium. Meanwhile, Illyria is left to pick up the pieces of their badly suffering Weyr, and Vanadium has grown ever more hostile toward the distressed Weyr. With an all out war threatening to occur at any moment, a hold caught in the middle refusing to pick sides, and two upcoming hatchings, the future is uncertain for the Weyrs and their inhabitants.
