Valkoran smiled and squeezed Jessa's hand back as they watched the Hatching. He couldn't believe it was happening either. Here they stood, away from their tiny hold, so far from where they'd once called home. And now they lived in the weyr, had places in its workings, and they stood as Candidates. Valkoran felt the luckiest he had ever been.
He watched as the two eggs he and Jessa had joked about hatched. They had wondered if the dragonets inside would be pink and purple, and Valkoran recalled that day with a grin. The pink one split neatly open to reveal-- well, what was that color? It took him a moment, but he placed it as a copper hatchling, and therefore probably female, as the last one had been. The purple egg shattered at the same moment, and out tumbled a deep brown dragonet who was quite clumsy. He got himself up and began to make his way through the Candidates; however, his clumsiness caused him to tumble into Jessa and knock her clear over. He stayed down on the Sands, crying.
V'koran, will you not help your Verith? Please? I am hungry and this girl knocked me down.
V'koran had been helping Jessa up when he froze. It was lucky Jessa was already balanced or she might have fallen back down, because he was in shock. But the shock quickly wore off as he realized that Verith was down, and was a little too upset to get back up himself. V'koran kneeled down in the hot sands and helped right the crying brown. Verith's eyes went rainbow as he looked into them, and he smiled the best smile ever.
Actually, I think you ran into her, but that's not important, he said to the hatchling. You're not hurt, I don't think. And I think she is okay. So let's go ea--
He stopped, and noticed that Jessa had Impressed the little copper hatchling. V'koran grinned at her and said, "She's beautiful. Should we go get them something to eat?"
Yes, let's eat, Verith said eagerly. He felt much better now that he was upright, and even hungrier.
----
Lanvon thought about C'adyn's question. "I don't know. I just want them all to hatch so I can see them," he finally replied with enthusiasm. He grinned at the bluerider, then watched as the first two Impressions were made, a brown to the male and a-- was that a bronze? To a girl? He turned to C'adyn, puzzled. "Did that girl just Impress a bronze?" he asked.

While everyone was admiring the copper and congratulating the two that Impressed, another egg hatched quietly on the sands. At first it was hard to tell that the egg had hatched at all. The dragonet looked almost exactly like the egg it had come from, so like the egg that the only way a person could tell that the dragonet was out was the whirling red eyes and the streaks of sea-green on the dragonet.
The egg that hatched was the aquamarine egg, the 16th egg Kaith had laid. The egg was the smallest one on the sands and the dragonet was no different. The dragonet is a tiny little creature. She is the smallest that a green can be without being termed a miniature. Her hide is a brilliant blue-green color, almost like aquamarine. There are small streaks of almost-invisible sea-green color throughout her hide. The color looks like soft ripples in a calm sea. Along the side of her face are streaks of sea-green. The sea-green emphasizes the elegant lines of her face and the jewel-like intensity of her whirling eyes.
The petite little thing sat where she had tumbled from the egg and then waddled off towards her mother. Her hide seemed to ripple as she walked and the bright color of her hide glowed in the light from hundreds of whirling dragon eyes and glows. She sat in front of the giant Queen. The dragonet wasn't even half the size of her mother's head. The Queen's sinuous neck bent and she nosed the little dragonet
Be easy my little one. Find your chosen the Queen said soothingly. The little green creeled. Her head swung towards Christae, standing near her dragon, but then Kaith's head gently pushed her away and she toddled off towards the Candidates.
She joined her blue brother in front of the Candidates. She sat and kept twisting her head from side to side, contemplating which person she wanted to be her rider. The blue paced restlessly in front of the boys. His chosen was not among them and he held no interest in the boys. The molten-orange bronze was still sitting on his rump creeling imperiously to be fed but not choosing anyone.
Christae watched with amused concern. Two of the dragonets had Impressed rather quickly but the first hatchling and two others were still on the sands creeling for their chosens. Would the blue and bronze go between because their chosens were not there? Where were the rest of the Candidates.
"Congratulations Jessa, V'koran. Your dragons are beautiful." And indeed they were. The little brown would be a fine beast one day once he overcame his hatchling ungainlyness and the copper was a gorgeous dainty little thing. Christae had to admit that the green almost beat the copper for beauty. The Weyrwoman decided that they were both equally beautiful.
~~~~~~~~~~~~ Rhia watched the hatchings with a keen eye. She had a healer at her side waiting. She remembered the last hatching. A boy had been killed and the Weyrwoman injured. She only hoped that the little bronze did not attack. The little blue seemed agitated as well. The beautiful little green looked curious. The WLM turned her attention to the newly Impressed dragonriders.
"Jessalyn, V'koran, come this way with your dragons." The WLM had bowls of food set out with various portions of meat in them. She picked a large bowl for the copper and a slightly smaller bowl for the brown. "Congratulations. V'koran your brown is a fine fellow. He will be nice and strong. Jessa, she is gorgeous. You are lucky. She is only the second copper on Pern. You need to feed them slowly. Do not let them gorge themseves or you will be up all night with them complaining about their stomachs. Make them chew their food or they will choke. They might bite their tongues so be warned. I have numbweed but the initial shock of it will be a bit much."
She smiled warmly even though she was lecturing them. She remembered the day that she had Impressed Mneith. She had been told the same words by her own WLM, an ageing greenrider that had gone between a few sevendays after their graduation to Senior W'lings. "What are their names?" She asked.
Jessa had been watching the first two hatchlings rather excitedly after she had seen the blue she fancied hadn't hatched when two more eggs gave up their occupants. The first was a very small bronze? What? It took Jessa a moment to remember that there were female dragons called coppers and she figured that must be what the rosy colored hatchling was. She only spared the brown that hatched a quick glance before turning her attention back to the other hatchlings and eggs.
Unfortunately for Jessa's butt and her pride, that was a mistake. If she had been watching the brown she would have seen him stumble and she would have been able to avoid being knocked flat on her rear by him. She let out a pain-filled "oomf" as she landed hard on the sands and gawked at the brown that was sprawled first on her then on the sands.
Valkoran had just managed to help her to her feet when suddenly he was kneeling in the sand helping the brown to his feet and Jessa realized what likely had happened. Smiling like a fool, she completely missed the approach of the little copper until her voice sounded in Jessa's mind. Baffled and more than a little shocked at the voice in her head, Jessa turned slowly until her gaze met that of the rosy-copper hatchling. Letting her mind follow down the conection to the hatchling's mind, Jessa asked shyly, Feed -my- Aylith? Then, excitedly she answered, Of course I'll feed you!
Kneeling down in the sands next to her soulmate, Jessa wrapped her arms around Aylith's delicate neck and hugged her as tightly as she dared and she told the dragonet, Never in my wildest dreams did I actually think I would be worthy of such a creature as you! Then she stood back up and bowed respectfully to both Kaith and her rider and announced proudly, "Her name is Aylith!"
After announcing her dragon's name, Jessa turned her attention back to her best friend and smiled gloriously at him. When he suggested they go feed their new charges, she nodded in agreement and Aylith mirrored her brother's eagerness and said, Food would be wonderful!
~~~~~
When Lanvon spoke to him finally, C'adyn had to pull his eyes away from the hatchlings and the eggs. Two had already impressed and he was incredibly proud as he always was when a dragonet found it's soulmate. Hearing what Lanvon said, C'adyn smiled broadly and answered, "I know what you mean." At Lanvon's question about the "bronze" impressing to a girl, C'adyn looked back to the sands and smirked a bit. Watching the two hatchlings leaving the sands to go get fed he told Lanvon, "We have a few unusual colors here at Dark Moon. I'm not exactly sure what caused the change but there are rumors and speculations. Anyway, that isn't a bronze, its a female copper so its not as odd a pairing as it may look."
Before he could comment on the rosy colored copper, a fifth egg hatched and he oggled at the sight of the green it produced. "Wow! Look at her!" he said excitedly and sent to Hith as well. The blue, C'adyn could tell, was sizing her up as he did with all greens. One day she will be quite the beauty, Hith told his rider in no uncertain terms. C'adyn had to agree.
~~~~~
After agreeing to feed the hatchlings, Jessa had walked with Valkoran as they'd led their dragonets over to where the WLM waited for them and all the other new pairs. The fact that they were the first two, and had Impressed at almost the same instant hadn't escaped Jessa's noticed and she was smiling the whole way.
Once they reached Rhia and the WLM explained what they were supposed to do, Jessa got down to work. The fact that Rhia gave her a bigger bowl than she gave V'koran made her eyes bug a little bit. Her dragon was going to be bigger than a brown?
When Rhia asked the dragonet's names, it shook Jessa out of her shock and she smiled proudly as she answered, "This is Aylith WLM." Then she turned and began to feed the hungry copper.
Tired. Thats the only thought that registered with the candidate with a watchwher's name; and such a mouthful too. Rifenjesk. Still, tired; she though to herself. Though it was bewildering since she never needed much rest before to feel awake and capable. 'Must be all the excitement,' she told herself, as she pulled the traditional white garb over her head. Patchy, fraying, but still white: and thats all she really cared about at the moment, aside from where in Pern her other sandal went.
Retrieving it from under fallen clothing she shoved it on her foot and sprinted down a corridor searching for a dragon rider. Her shoulder was tugged by a repulsive looking man. He shuddered with fear though he said 'Come.' as calmly as he could. A green dragon was waiting, matching only in appearance to her rider. "Hold tight and we shall hurry, lass." He said in a gruff sort of way. Rifenjesk scarcely nodded before she was plunged to the rushing wind from wing flaps of the green beast for a few heartbeats.
1... 2... 3...
They were just above the hatching-grounds. "Get a move on!" Said the man. Rifenjesk said "Thank you-..." She faltered at remembering his name. ~ I'pod he is. I am Scrandanfibrith. Go. Good Luck.~
What a curious thing it was to have a dragon talk to you. She shook herself from the eerily wonderful feeling and made her way to the semi-circle of girl candidates keeping out of the way of the others, though she still had quite the view.
I'pod however was located in a portion of the stands, where a short twisted man, would have a few difficulties at seeing. His mouth curled with a growl as he stood on his toes, scarcely able to few. But it was something. He felt Scrandanfibrith telling him to calm down. With a sigh he watched the candidates a moment, then his eyes traveled to the eggs, again brought to his own hatching memories in the moment. He regressed, feeling joy and adoration and with a comforting notion; he did calm himself and did enjoy the speculation.
Jakel yawned lazily and opened his eyes. He looked around with his tired eyes and noticed that there was only one person still in the barracks, and he looked like he was having a nightmare. Jakel shrugged and began to wonder where everyone was. It wasn't until then that the candidate heard the deep humming of the hatching. He began to freak out. How long had that been going on? Everyone was gone except for that one boy! He quickly changed into a white robe and threw one a pair of sandals. He ran out of the barracks, completely forgetting about the other candidate.
He saw only one dragon still by the barracks. It was a large green with a female rider standing there, and amazingly, she looked patient. Unknown to the candidate, this was because the green-rider was having her dragon relay all of the hatching events to her. "There you are! The green-rider said worriedly. Hurry, hurry. Eggs have hatched and impressed." She said quickly. Jakel nodded and mounted the dragon. Afterward, the rider mounted her bonded in front of him and he held onto her waist. "My name is Nira, rider of green Siarath. Hold on tight." She introduced herself.
The green flapped her wings and they all left the ground. She went quickly, so that none of the hatchlings went between waiting for this candidate. They landed near the sands. Jakel jumped off. "Are there anymore candidates?" Nira questioned the boy.
"Yeah, there is one more." He said quickly and ran toward the hatching. He tripped and landed on his face. The scorching sands burned his bare skin. He quickly jumped to his feet and ran toward the hatching. He saw hatchlings on the sands. Keeping his distance he bowed to the queen and joined the remaining males.
******************************************
Hali clenched her teeth. She had to wait for all of the boys to leave so that she could change but one candidate was taking forever to wake. As he stirred she closed his eyes. She listened to the bed squeaking beneath his weight. A few minutes later she heard hurried steps leave the room. She carefully opened her eyes and looked around. Good, there were none left. She got up to get ready. She brushed her short hair. Hali bandaged her chest and slipped on the white robes and sandals. She looked at herself to make sure you couldn't see the bandages through the robes. She then hurried outside.
As she got there she saw a large green land. "You are the last correct?" The green-rider asked. Worry was obvious in her voice.
Hali nodded before mounting the dragon. The three hurried to the sands. Hali rushed over to the hatching. She bowed to the queen and stood by the remaining boys. Suddenly, it hit her. What if the hatchling knew she was a girl? What if it got angry at her? She shook her head. She would have to just hope for the best.
******************************************
Finally done, Nira went over to the stands to watch the rest of the hatching. Siarath went over to her perch.
Miya had been in the stands, watching everything.
((Sorry it took so long. I am glad that none of the hatchlings died in the wait.))
Sorcha let herself be lead into the Hatching sands. She would have been surprised that they let her in there but she was past caring at the moment. Her blue eyes were dull. She didn't even perk up with the flitt popped from between to croon softly on her shoulder.
She barely saw the eggs hatch for her eyes had traveled down to look at her arms. Smooth, unbroken skin. Slightly browned from the skin. If only it was darker, flowing. Her brow knitted...not now. She wouldn't further ruin the happy occasion. She would just wait for it to end. She'd slip away. A nasty way to die, betweening. She'd rather the pain...maybe a cliff? With these morbid musing within her mind she barely saw the eggs turn into dragonets that moved around. Sorcha sighed and did her duty to watch.
~~~~~~~~~
Kinest grumbled as more vibrations and rumblings started. He threw his pillow again but this time it continued. He leaned up to glare but there wasn't any one left in the barracks. It took a few minutes for the rumblings to process through Kinest's sleep slowed brain.
HATCHING! A kid-like smile pasted itself on Kinest's face as he raced out of the barracks. And back in. It wouldn't do to arrive only in your underpants. He growled and make a mess of covers and clothes as he searched for the Candidate Robes he'd be given along with the chores. With the room left covered in clothes and covers he left, hopping as he fitted his other sandal on. He arrived in the line as Lira came back for another Candidate.
She smiled and held out a hand. Kinest smiled back and took the hand eagerly, ready for a flight to send him to the Hatching. There wasn't much that got the little boy excited but he'd been hanging around for weeks listening to the talk of Hatching and now wasn't going to miss it 'cause he was shy.
~~~~~~~~~~
Lira smiled and looked back at the broadly grinning boy, deciding to leave him in peace. Usually she was there to calm and console the anxcious Candidates but the boy seemed fine so she let him be. Her eyes darted amoung the dragons glad that she wasn't the dragon. Trying to weave amoung that chaos. She shook her head, after two rounds they were finally able to land. She got off the dragon only in time to see the lad jump off and go towards the Hatching Sands, his bedhair flying widly in the wind.
Lira chuckled, remembering her own feelings at going to the Hatching that produced Avith. She hadn't been so hyper but it'd been a special day. The green launched towards the rafters to add her humming to the other voices and Lira weaved around the landing dragons and people to get a seat in the stands.
~~~~~~~~~
Kinest pouted a little as he saw that a blue was already hatched and two others had already Impressed. He pretty much missed the next hatching as he moved to get to the Candidate circle and his view was obstructed. He settled in to stand and watch the rest though, not wanting to miss anymore. He rubbed his eyes, waking them up a little more before smiling. It was only then that he caught sight of the gold. His smile faltered a bit...he'd forgotten to bow to her. He shrugged and bowed a bit there, not wanting to go back from his spot. She'd forgive him he reasoned.
~~~~~~~~
S'dim sighed as it seemed most, if not all, of the Candidates had been relayed to the Hatching Sands. Between his trips he'd managed to keep up with the progress of the hatching but was glad to finally sit down to watch it. His blue hummed with the rest and watched the hatchlings move about. His eyes whirled an even faster color, The egg is back! S'dim smiled seeing that it was so. No wonder the queen looked so happy. He hadn't seen her anger but it was a happy occasion so he hadn't noticed before now. Now everything was perfect. He clapped politely as the two Impressed. A copper and brown, good. Strong colors to fill the Weyr's ranks for fighting thread.
(( You don't have to rush the Impression. I won't be back for a while anyway -shrugs- I'll read it all and reply when I get back ))
The hatchlings seemed so disoriented when they hatched. You wanted to run and help them, to reassure them that everything would be fine. Unfortunately that was exactly what they were not supposed to do.
Pilan gritted his teeth and held still, waiting and letting the hatchlings try to get their wings out of the way or cry in the shell without help. It did let him watch everything, that was the one good thing about following the instructions he had been given.
He let out a relieved cheer at the first impressions. It was happening! This was what was supposed to happen and two of the candidates had been chosen. He managed to not jump up and down and clap like he was ten turns old, but oh did he want to!
((I'm on a brand new xmas present computer, please be patient of typos and such. I have days of fiddling ahead to get everything adjusted.))
Hasima stood quietly, her body shaking with nerves just slightly but there was also shivers of excitement mixed in with that. She watched as eggs cracked, shattered and broke to reveal dragonets of all size and colour. Despite her anxiety, she watched with wonder as each new draognet appeared. 'Oh, how they are so wonderful, and their colours are amazing.' Was the thought that occured in Hasima's mind, varely registering as excitement took over.
She watched as candidates Impressed to wonderful dragonets, and she weakly smiled to them as her congratulations. She watched as some dragonets struggled against the shells that contained them, and sub-conciously wanted to go help them because she knew what it was like to need help but not get any. But her legs stood still, necer taking a step to help one of them. She scanned around her, seeing who was left. But there was a question that still lingered deep down, would she Impress?
The little blue saw a few more Candidates enter. He creeled and then stumbled over to them to investigate. He sniffed at Kalor for a bit but then turned away. This one wasn't His. Where was he? He knew that his chosen was not with the girls. He had looked at them already. He had no interest in the females.
He sat down, creeling with hunger. He rose again and passed Pilan. He paused for a bit but then moved on. Finally he felt something for one of the boys. He was one of the new arrivals. The silver flecked blue was certain of it.
K'nest, K'nest, why did you hide from your Temesth for so long? I was beginning to think you did not want me. Do you want me? Temesth walked to where K'nest stood and walked into him, knocking the boy down. The dragonet sat on the boy's chest. Please say you want me. I have waited so long for you. He creeled his hunger.
Wolf watched as the hatchlings broke out of there eggs, everything was happening so quickly. Her head was spinning, focusing on the female dragon's up on the sands. She noticed that the Green's were likely to be plentiful. What if she impressed a Green? She felt awful, thinking negatively about a hatchling that could very well be her new partner. 'A dragon is a dragon and I'll gladly impress any with pride,' she beamed. A meat bag was firmly strapped to her side for whatever dragon she impressed. She knew that her bonded would pick her out from the other's because it was meant to be, not because she bared meat. They were not flitt's. She could see Hasima was nervous, beginning to worry for the girl. "It'll be okay," she said quietly to her, placing a hand on her arm. "This day is a day to be happy." The smile that had once lighted Wolf's face was still present, going to show that she was taking her own advice. She watched the dragon's intently, ignoring the feeling of fear that were trying to creep up on her. Not fear of the beautiful hatchlings before her but the fear that she would not impress. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Roxis watched as the hatching commenced, the hatchlings breaking from there shells with sheer eagerness to greet the world. His eyes automatically fixed up on the Bronze hatchling, remembering his dreams of long ago of being a Bronze rider. For a moment he seemed to be searching the stands for Akki knowing that in a sense what he impressed affected any potential relationship he was able to have with her. A fist formed at his side, taking in soothing breath's to calm himself. Both of his arms were now loosely at his sides, waiting and watching.... what would happen? It seemed like time was passing so slowly (to him) as the hatchlings observed the choice's they had before them, attempting to pin point there life partners.
Rifenjesk turned her head like a small confused canine. Such a beatiful little creature, though impressed to the lad across the way. Yes, she could tell. There was no way anyone could confuse that look of wonder plastered across that lads face. She pushed her bangs from her eyes to see better, keeping a firm gaze on the rocking ages. It felt like ages on the hot and sticky sands, but would it be worth it? Her thoughts reeled around her head, thinking of the future, if now, and perhaps of the past. She glanced to the clutchmother and furrowed her brow. Wondering what that dragon must mean to the Weyrwoman. She shuddered involuntarily, and folded her arms over her chest. Seconds seemed to creep by as hours as she watched, curiousty filled.
Anassa looked hopeful when then little copper passed in front of her. She was a bit disappointed when the rose colored beauty passed her by and went to the fallen Jessalyn. "Congratulations V'koran and Jessalyn." She saw after that the little blue had knocked Kinest over and was sitting on his chest. She bit back a laugh. There would be a song about this. The young Harper heard the melody in her mind. The bronze was still wandering around creeling for his chosen. Anassa knew that the bronze would not go to her. Girls NEVER Impressed bronzes.
Aww, a bronze. And compeltly bypassed in the moment of the blue's impression time. Rifenjesk sighed fondly, though she was keen not to get attached as some would say. She too know of bronzes, and which gender they impressed. Didn't they all? She rocked on her feet on the sands, with a hopeful smile tugging to her lips, and an aura about her as was around all candidates. Excitement, as always. She shivered with it, and embraced its feeling. She wished well to the small bronze, and hoping its and soon to be bonded many turns of good fortune. She turned her glance back to the eggs, maybe, just maybe hope would lie in within.
The next egg broke. The egg was the purple lightning egg. The egg cracked, but just enough so that a dark, silvery green head could poke out. This green's head had a strip of purple lightning running down the front to the nose. There were small spots of purple under the green's eyes and the tips of her head knobs were purple as well. She creeled and rocked her egg some more. She wound up rolling her egg a bit. She landed with her head down. Luckily she had ducked her head back into the egg. She kept tapping against the shell. It was almost comical to see her struggle. Finally part of the egg cracked open and her tail stuck out. She rocked again and she was able to move enough so that she could stick her head out of the first hole. Her tail was the same dark silvery green as her head and the underside of her tail was a greenish purple. She looked rather absurd but cute with her head and tail sticking out of the egg. She let out a creel of hunger that drew an "Awww from the watching crowd."
Wolf watched as the purple-lightning egg rocked back and forth. As the head of the hatchling and the tail of the hatchling came out of the egg she couldn't help but laugh. The sight was very comical indeed. She watched, wondering if it'd be able to relieve itself from the rest of the shell that was around it's body. It's creel for hunger set her eyes sparkling, though she still watched the rest of the hatchlings as well. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Roxis continued to watch the Bronze hatchling, though he noticed the purple-lightning egg was rocking. As the hatchling partly hatched he was one of those that gave an "awww..." He admired the female's beauty before his eyes magnetically drew back to the Bronze. He began to fret some, though he didn't let it show. He didn't care much of what color he impressed, only that he did. Thoughts of Akki were hard to keep away at a time like this, though he wasn't even bothering to try. Thought's of Ebbeth made him chuckle, wondering if his hatchling would be anything like the fun Blue.
Hasima turned her attention, watching the purple egg crack, only to reveal a dragonet's head. It, well she because of the colour, looked oddly humourus as she tried to push her way out of the egg. Without even realizing it, a grin broke out across his face as the dragonet made noises, wanting food. She wanted to go out and help every single dragon out of his or her own shell, tell them it's okay to get stuck and recieve help. But she didn't, what she was told from Akki stayed in her mind. She knew what to do and what not to do, it stuck in her head. Finally, she remembered something.
Jakel let out a small chuckle as the blue ran over a fellow candidate. Hali covered her mouth and stifled a gasp. She thought it was going to hurt him, but realized that the blue was simply making an eager impression.It just plopped its butt down on Kinest's chest and stared into the boy's eyes.
Jakel's and Hali's attention went back to the eggs as one began to rock furiously. Jakel watched impatiently for the struggling dragonet to break free. One whole broke and it's tail popped out. Then it's head popped out. Jakel starting laughing, but he tried to hold it back as best as he could. Nevertheless he continued to lightly laugh. Hali looked at the creature with adoration. It was so cute. It looked like a dragon with an egg body, since the head and tail were sticking out.
A green! Rifenjesk gave a soft sigh at its adorable appearance. Rifenjesk streched her limbs as though stiff from time. A green, and with purple, too. Beautiful. She rocked on her feet, keeping an eye on the green dragonette. Almost dreamlike she watched her, the eggs, and all in between though not as important. People, sometimes made her unease.
The green continued to struggle to get out of her egg. The egg rocked and rocked. A few more cracks appeared but not enough to free the rest of the dragonette's body. One leg stuck out in addition to her head and tail but nothing more. Her aquamarine sister creeled and trundled over to her as if to help. After a time, the purplish green dragonette slumped down in her egg and cried piteously.
Kaith crooned to her daughter. Call your chosen my dear one. The green raised her purple streaked head and creeled again. She twisted her head as much as she could with the egg shell and peered at the Candidates, weighing them and trying to see her chosen. She could feel her there but she could only see her bonded out of the corner of her whirling red eyes.
