Caspian Hold, for the most part, had gotten used to seeing a tunnelcat wander around. Kanor was rather well trained and never seemed to cause too much trouble so nobody really minded him.
Of course, now Kanor was pushing his boundaries just a bit. Rukbat was starting to set, the sky turning a darker and darker blue with every moment that passed. The tunnelcat had left the corridors of the Hold and was now in the fields, darting in and out of the legs of runners. None of the runners seemed to mind him; as long as he didn’t get underneath their feet when they moved, of course. So it wasn’t that tiny little critter than sent majority of runners crying out loudly.
That would have been Ejinsk. The large bronze had woken up and immediately set off and trying to find his furry little friend. He followed the scent of Kanor through the Hold and finally was lumbered towards the fields now. The wind had picked up slightly and within seconds the scent of wher had reached the runners and more or less sent them into a frenzy. Ejinsk sat on his bottom heavily and stared at the runners, unsure of what to do.
Kanor flattened himself against the ground, darting out of the way of hooves. How was the bronze supposed to reach his friend now?
Oops.

Qiana was a bit late getting the last of the chores done in the barn for the night. She'd already refilled water buckets for the night and was sweeping out the aisle between all the stalls of any excess hay or etc. The girl might've finished it all earlier, but she'd been out for most of the afternoon getting groceries for her parents - they'd been booked with lessons and runner-training all day. She put the broom back and was just stepping out of the barn to head inside when the sound of frantic runners came from the pasture. Without giving a second thought as to what may have been causing the commotion, Qiana was running through the barn to head through the pasture-side door.
With dark closing in and Qiana's attention focused immediately on the runners, she didn't notice the bronze wher somewhere off but near the fields. Ignoring the gate, Qiana grabbed the fence and clambered over; she stood on it momentarily to look out over the panicking runners, looking for a certain coat that should stick out even in the dark. As soon as she'd spotted it, Qiana jumped off the fence, into the field, and ran towards the outskirts of the frantic herd. She clapped, then brought her fingers up to her mouth to give a sharp whistle. It took a few repetitions, but the noise managed to break through the chaos and soon enough a buckskin mare made it's way over.
"Hushh, shh. Easy," Qiana murmured to her runner. She pet the mare's nose a few times, then made her way around to her side - making sure to keep her hand firmly but gently along the runner's coat. She grabbed hold of the mane tightly, then pulled herself up and onto her Meadowsweet's back. A tug of the mane and a tap of her heels and she was wheeling the mare around to run towards the herd. Runners followed runners - if she could get their attention and get them following Meadowsweet, she could get them to stop, and get them calm.
Then she could figure out what on Pern had them so riled up![/size]

It was that ‘Oops’ Ejinsk had sent that stirred Ejinic from his sleep. He cracked on eye open, expecting to see the large lump of bronze practically beside him.
However, he saw nothing. Immediately he threw off the furs and jumped out of his bed. It was too early for Ejinsk! Sure, it was sunset but this was his wher – that thing slept until midnight. “Shard it, Ejinsk! Where are you?” He called out, as if the wher was just simply playing hide and seek. He quickly pulled on some pants and took off out of his room, a shirt clutched in his hand as he bolted down the corridors; searching for the familiar color of bronze. It was never a good sign when the wher wasn’t there - last time this had happened he had managed to get into the kitchens and cause a fuss.
Thankfully though, Ejinsk was sending images of scared runners into the man’s mind. There was also a few pictures of Kanor, practically curled up in a ball and stiff from fear. “The pasture.” He mumbled, quickly turning and taking the corridor to his right.
Within seconds Ejinic was beside his bronze, frowning. “What did you do?” He groaned, seeing the runners kick up a fuss at his presence. Ejinsk peered at his bonded, a look of apology plastered all over his face. He looked out at the field, placed two fingers into his mouth and gave a loud, sharp whistle. Kanor’s ears picked up slightly as he uncurled himself and bolted towards his owner – careful to dodge the hooves of the animals around him. The tiny creature reached Ejinic, nails latching onto the mans pants as he climbed up him.
Ejinic winced slightly when the tunnelcats nails touched bare skin; realizing his shirt was still clutched in his hand. The he finally spotted a person on a runner, trying to get the others to calm down. He lifted a hand into the air, “Sorry! Sorry. Ejinsk’s bad.”

Peranami had been coming from the kitchens, a treat in her possession in apology for not visiting Larthy for the past two days. She was sure the runner must be a tad in the dumps, especially since he was used to seeing her everyday for hours at a time. She had to admit, she felt terribly guilty, but had been doing chores and the like to... well, justify her living here and to prove she could work hard like anyone else, not just entertain.
At the sounds of a distressed heard, Peranami switched into a quick ground eating loap. She would be devastated if anything happened to Larthy! He was part of her family, a friend and entertainer, for all that he was a simple runner.
Her eyes grew wide at the unrest of the heard when she finally came within seeing distance of the heard. One woman on a runner trying to calm the throng.... and a wher off to the sidelines looking rather shamefaced, next to his bonded.
Ignoring the wher and his, for the moment, Peranami easily flipped onto the sturdy fence and searched for her Larthy's hide. Not the first time in her life, Peranami wished she could pull off one of those ear splitting whistles that she had been hearing rather often as of late. But since she had never found herself with that ability, she was thankful, at least, for her powerful voice.
"AMENJAAAAAAA!!!" Her voice, loud and with her full diaphragm in it, nicely made itself heard over the noise of the frantic runners. One head perked and turned towards her, swiftly and gracefully weaving his way to where she perched on the fence, his passage marked by the light clinking of his bangles.
He was still pretty twitchy, but with a few soothing words and affectionate strokes, he became soothed and started nudging her palms and pockets for the treat he knew she had for him. After all, Amenja was her keyword for 'come and eat'. She figured the best way to get his attention would be through his stomach. Apparently she was right.
After a few more calming coos she slipped him one of the treats she had brought out for him, and easily vaulted onto his back. The feeling of riding with out a saddle brought a twinge of nostalgia for her younger days, but she brushed the feeling aside and set Larthy to helping the other woman calm the heard.

Qiana tapped gently at Meadowsweet's sides with her heels, guiding her to circle the outer edge of the panicky herd. Once she'd gotten the idea into her mare's mind, she gripped tightly onto her runner's side, and they sped up. For a few moments the world dimmed out, even the worry over the other runners, and there was just the wind, and the runner beneath her. Around the same time that an apology was being called out and another person was soothing their own runner, Qiana and Meadowsweet barreled past the fence where the gate was in another round around the herd. They were only running in a large circle, but the speed and decisiveness of the run was what would catch the attention of the other runners.
It worked, and in a brief moment a few other runners wheeled to follow after Meadowsweet, beating their hooves against the ground. Others joined in, and soon the panic-driven-energy was turned into simply running after the leading runner. When Qiana looked over her shoulder and saw the herd following, she sat up from her leaned-forward position and, with a soft movement of her feet, slowed Meadowsweet down to a slower gallop, then a jog, and then an easy walk. The other runners slowed as well, and soon stopped. She turned Meadowsweet and noticed that they were still a bit twitchy; after a quick look around she spotted the other person on their own runner. Realizing they must have helped to get the herd thinking straight and so quickly calm, she offered a smile and waved. One horse with direction was noticeable enough, but if there had been two then it certainly would've gotten the herd's attention.
"Thank you!" she called, then looked around once more. This time, she did see the man standing beside his wher. She recognized them as Ejinic and his Ejinsk, and vaguely remembered now that someone had called out an apology when she was focusing on the runners. Satisifed with how the herd was acting now - twitchy and wary of the wher, but otherwise calm - she urged Meadowsweet into a slow jog to head to the edge of the fence closest to where the two were.
"Considering he's sitting still, I have to guess it was just his scent." She made sure to give another smile to show she wasn't cross. None of the runners had been hurt, no harm was done. "It was probably equally the wind's fault."

Ejinic flinched slightly when someone yelled out ‘Amenja’. Was that even a real word? It didn’t sound familiar and suddenly he was wondering if his vocabulary knowledge was severely lacking. He watched as another girl threw herself into the mass of runners, quickly getting to work in calming them down. It was rather interesting to see – Ejinic didn’t know much about runners but these girls seemed to be quite efficient.
When Qiana moved towards them, Ejinic was able to recognize the girl. He had seen her around a few times but never really talked to her before this. He had heard that she was quite good with the animals though. It was quite nice to see that she held no grudge against his wher – bonus points for her. “Ejinsk knows better than to go near the runners.” He frowned, looking at the wher. The bronze was fully aware that his presence often kicked up a fuss when near runners. Different shades of blue flashed in Ejinic’s mind, Ejinsk was apologizing before throwing some images of Kanor into the mix.
“My tunnelcat got into the field, Ejinsk was following.” The man explained, Kanor making an ‘Eep’ noise when his name was mentioned. He looked past Qiana and waved to Peranami, “Sorry! I hope he didn’t scare your runner too badly!”

It had been a nice bit of fun, calming the runners down and herding them in. It was something Peranami rarely did.
Once the runners had been calmed, she nodded at the other girl's thanks, a large smile on her face. She then followed her over to the wher and his bonded at a leisurely pace. Larthy felt a bit more assured with his rider aboard him, the jingle of his bangles a melodious sound as his steps drew nearer to the others.
Peranami smiled and shook her head at what the wher handler said. "No, no. He's fine now. Larthy's a fairly tolerant runner. He had to be in order for me to ride him after all, I'm far to acrobatic for my own good sometimes." She gave the runner's neck another affectionate pat. before turning to scrutinize the two males.
"But still, twas lucky nothing serious happened. Twould have been a bad thing if a runner had scared itself into a broken leg." The woman lightly shook her head made a knocking motion on her thigh, as if to keep away such bad things.

Qiana looked to the fuzzy tunnelcat when he was brought up. She smiled and nodded, picturing the situation at this point. "My suggestion would be to let your Wher know that following the tunnelcat towards the runners is probably not the best idea in the future." Qiana looked over to the other rider as she came towards them. Now that there was less commotion and they weren't so far away, she could recognize the girl as one of the people who paid to board their runners in her parent's stables. She nodded in agreement to her sentiment.
"It would have been," she said. "He handled it well," she said about the runner, smiling a bit and patting at her mare's neck, "Meadowsweet is used to taking lead of the herd, but I'm sure she appreciated the help tonight as well."
