D'vraid jolted awake, his hand groping for his knife. It was half way out of his sheath before he felt himself pitching over. He automatically flailed his arms to keep his balance, the leftover fear of his dream replaced by the reflexive adrenaline rush of an impending fall. He finally managed to steady himself, placing his back against the wall, breathing hard. He consolidated his position shakily, shaking his head to get rid of the cobwebs that shrouded his thinking.
He tried to suppress his frenzied breaths, feeling like the noise would waken other riders, but then laughed to himself. He managed finally, the adrenaline of the moment fading away to leave a sense dread from the nightmare that brought it on. But, he knew from experience that this too would pass soon. Although it often came back to trouble him, the past was dead and gone. It would never do anything more than rob him of rest, and eventually, it would cease to do even that.
Aye. Just keep telling yourself that. One day you might actually believe it.
The dragon riders always had many things to keep the people of his rank occupied, and the last sevenday in Dark Moon Weyr had been no exception. In that whole time, he had reconnoitered the habits of a certain female rider, helped the candidates, and tangled with his dragon about the importance of knowing everyone's name. That last one had turned out to be a trap. A busy three weeks, even for him.
He glanced down the hall seeing no one was up at least in his section of the Weyr. He decided now would be a good time to give Baneth a rub down. Baneth looked at his rider and spoke,'Thank you D'vraid. But I can feel you are thinking of something else.' D'vraid looked at his life partner and sighed,'I have been a rider for fourteen years and have never found a female worth being called my partner...But no matter let us travel to the lake.'
They arrived at the lake a few minutes later D'vraid dismounting Baneth. He chuckles softly as Baneth dived into the lake and resurfaced joyously seeing D'vraid step in holding some of the cloths for washing him. 'D'vraid we have company...'
