When the story began, several generations had passed since the last time thread was a danger to Evariste Hold, and famine had struck their farming hard. Neighbouring Weyrs Illyria and Vanadium suffered from the Hold’s shortages. While Illyria did their best to adapt, Vanadium demanded everything they were due, and warned Illyria that if they didn't get it from the Hold, they would take it from them. When they refused to share, the crafty Vanadium Weyrwoman decided to kidnap the Lord’s daughter and point the finger at Illyria. By ‘rescuing’ her, they ensured that they received a larger portion of the Tithe. Illyria, on the other hand, was struggling just to feed their dragons, much less the rest of the Weyr.
Gradually the Hold and two Weyrs recovered, but the hostility remained. It was in this context that the Goldrider Hayven rose to power in Illyria, fighting to retain control over her Weyr as tensions increased and the Holders grew more and more suspicious.
It’s several turns later, and things are only getting worse.
With Illyria under the leadership of the young Weyrwoman Hayven and Vanadium beneath Weyrwoman Nenine, for a time there was relative peace. Hatchings abounded and there was stability, until Vanadium Weyr, desperate for more Dragonriders to boost their falling numbers, burst into a Hatching at Illyria with some of their own Candidates, who managed to Impress to several of the dragons. Illyrians were outraged, and demanded some sort of revenge, but it did not come. An uneasy truce was made between the two…until the fateful day that Illyrian Wings were out conducting a drill over the lake, when an assortment of the Vanadium Wings, unaware of their presence, emerged from between right in their midst. One of the Illyrian dragons accidentally flamed at a Vanadium one before anybody could realize what was happening, and he vanished between.
The tensions between the two Weyrs snapped, and for the first time in their history, a true fight broke out: dragon against dragon, rider against rider. The Vanadium Weyrwoman’s queen managed to halt the battle, but not before both sides suffered huge losses. Her riders demanded that she organize an attack on Illyria, which she refused. Furious, they plotted to get rid of her…and in the middle of the night, a group of Riders stormed into her weyr, holding the woman at knifepoint and giving her an ultimatum: leave, or die.
The pair vanished, leaving behind Copper Rinaelyth’s clutch on the Hatching Sands of Vanadium Weyr.
Illyria fared little better. Weyrwoman Hayven disappeared, leaving a gap in leadership, and the weyr smarting from the loss of their Senior Queen on top of so many of their riders.
Relations between the two weyrs are more strained than ever, and it's anybody's guess what will happen now.
The choice is yours. Will you join the noble Illyrians to stand against the desperate Vanadium riders, or will you brave the cut-throat politics of a Weyr that is determined to survive no matter the cost?
