During the Third Pass of Thread, Pern suffered a great dilemma with it's main protection -- the dragons. They were falling ill and dying from some strange sickness. The only creatures that seemed to be saved were Wind Blossom's whers; the fire-lizards and dragons were coughing and an odd green mucus was ejected whenever the creatures coughed. Benden's Senior queen was lost and only their junior Queenrider, a beastcrafter before she impressed, could save the dragons...she paid the ultimate price for her heroic actions -- the loss of her queen dragon...
All of this was lost in the 1250 turns that had passed between the Third Pass and Sixth Pass. The actions of those Benden riders were forgotten, the room where the vaccination was created was closed again by a cave-in. 10 turns before the Pass began, dragons were starting to become ill once again, fire-lizards were dropping from the skies just as quickly as the dragons were becoming sicker and sicker. Pern was in trouble, and as time passed by, the cure for the dragons was slowly slipping from the minds of the holdfolk. They had lost hope, but the dragonriders had not. Many riders became ex-riders as their dragons suicide without them; some riders took their own lives, and others had loved ones that gave them reason to live again.
Whers were once again unaffected by this dragon's plague and strangely enough, all the weyrlings from sick clutchmothers, were born healthy and showed no signs of the illness even into their adulthood. Hope was restored, if these healthy weyrlings could some how produce more healthy children, then perhaps this new generation's genes have created an immunity to the illness naturally. It was the only hope the dragonriders had. So they scouted out a place that the illness had not struck, a place where the fire-lizards did not mate at, or live at to spread the illness, a safe haven for the hope of Pern.
Asylum Weyr was created only a turn after the illness struck. Ista and Igen had once again merged together; Benden and High Reaches were spared major losses, Telgar was fairing, and Fort was all but decimated by the illness. Healthy riders, mature and youngsters were sent to Asylum as soon as the newest generation were old enough to between to the Far Western Continent in which Asylum was located on. Once 45 riders and their families were settled at the new weyr, their only gold rose a month later, producing a clutch of 20 eggs and one queen egg. There the first Saffron was hatched. She and her rider were sent to Fort once they were old enough to rise. That was four turns into the illness and now, it seemed to be the longest going plague in Pern's history. Only two turns after the first Saffron was hatched, the last clutch of Asylum's dying gold was laid.
22 eggs including one queen egg that was strangely molted with gold and an orangish color. Was this going to be a saffron or a gold? Many wondered, and with the new saffron, came new colors. Ebonies as dark as the night's skies, silvers the only subordinate metallic female, and crimsons whose hides were has blood colored as the Red Star. It seemed the dragon's plague altered not only the dragon's immunity genes but their color genetics as well. Ayburth impressed to Asylum Hold's own kitchen worker, Ryari. What new challenges lie with the second hatched Saffron and her chosen? What will happen to Pern as Asylum continues to become more and more detached from the Northern Continent? This is the story of one Saffronrider, one weyr, one world's fight for survival against its deadliest enemy --Thread.
